WorldCom secures $1.5 billion in funding

CLINTON, Miss., May 23 (Reuters) - WorldCom Inc. (NasdaqNM:WCOM - News) said on Thursday it secured $1.5 billion in new funding, giving the No. 2 U.S long-distance telephone and data services company additional breathing room as it works to restructure its balance sheet.

WorldCom, which had previously said it would secure the funding by May 23, said the lead banks for the new accounts receivable facility are Citigroup and JPMorgan Chase.

The new program does not contain any ratings triggers, WorldCom said in a statement.

Earlier this month, WorldCom received a waiver on its existing $2 billion accounts receivable program after debt rating agencies slashed its credit rating to "junk" status.

This facility replaces that earlier program. Shares of WorldCom were up 14 cents, or 8.5 percent, at $1.79 in afternoon Nasdaq trading.
