NEW YORK (CNNfn) - With new research showing that more Internet companies are going to run out of cash this year, Internet fund manager Paul Cook said they`re going to have to change their strategies.
Cook said on CNNfn`s In the Money that companies with cash would have an easier time surviving, especially in volatile times.
"Some of these companies are going to have to look for creative ways to either get more cash, or perhaps to partner with somebody that has cash," said Cook, manager of the Munder NetNet Fund.
Cook said more companies like Amazon.com (AMZN: Research, Estimates), are beginning to borrow in the debt market, rather than raise new equity capital, giving investors a new avenue to obtain stock.
More often these days, Cook said Internet companies are issuing convertible bonds, which gives investors an easy way to get into an Internet stock.
For investors, Cook said it is important to look at companies that have the cash to successfully get through periods of unprofitability.
In some cases, investors should look beyond the dot.coms that spend a lot of money building a brand name, to firms that form the backbone of the Internet business. For example, he recommends networking company Exodus Communications (EXDS: Research, Estimates) and VeriSign (VRSN: Research, Estimates), a Web security company.
"I think there are some companies back there that are forming some, perhaps, natural monopolies, where they don`t necessarily have to build brand, and then they could actually get to profitability at the gross and the operating level much more quickly," Cook said.
