Redlands,CA--The Geography Network, http://www.geographynetwork.com, the first online service allowing real-time access to distributed commercial and noncommercial geographic content through a central location, has been upgraded with improvements in functionality, ease-of-use, and search-and-preview capability.

Returning Geography Network users will first notice the site’s cosmetic redesign. However, they will soon discover improved functionality of the Geography Network Explorer feature which uses to the capabilities of ESRI’s recently released ArcIMS 4 and its Metadata Server.

“Enhancing the Explorer search engine and preview tools with new Metadata Server technology has vastly improved the Web site,” says Jack Dangermond, president of ESRI. “This new certified technology will allow for greater content to be made available through the Web site. We expect the Geography Network to be a network at the metadata level—the hub of dozens of other metadata servers.”

Users can perform searches based on any combination of geographic extent, content type, data format, or keyword. The Geography Network Explorer can read any Extensible Markup Language (XML) document that is published to it. No matter where the data originates or is served from, users can easily access the data through a single user account.

Another significant update to the Geography Network is the new ArcExplorer–Web Services Edition, a fully functional interface developed with ArcIMS 4. By using the ArcExplorer–Web tool, the user can perform basic geographic information system (GIS) analysis of selected data through the browser without downloading any special viewing software or other “plug-ins.” Standard mapping tools such as zoom, pan, identify, and find are part of the ArcExplorer–Web application. From the application, the user can search for and overlay other data on the map they are using.

To showcase its new services, tools, and functionality, the Geography Network will have an all-new look and feel. Important tools, such as the new ArcExplorer–Web, will be prominently featured on the site’s home page along with GIS Web services from ESRI and other providers.

As industry moves closer to the integration between the Internet and the desktop, the Geography Network provides a direct link between the user and service providers offering maps, value-added data, and industry-specific applications and solutions.

“The Geography Network has rapidly become the place on the Internet where GIS users look first for data,” says Dangermond. “Now it will also be the place to find and consume GIS Web services.” Users looking to add spatial functionality to their Web site or applications can now find GIS Web services offered on the Geography Network from software developers such as ESRI and others who wish to publish their services.

The Geography Network offers content from a constantly growing number of leading map and data providers who are committed to making geographic content available to others. Current contributors of data to the Geography Network include the World Bank; Federal Emergency Management Agency; National Aeronautics and Space Administration; the U.S. Geological Survey; National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; Geographic Data Technology, Inc.; the National Geographic Society; Tele Atlas; and dozens of municipal, county, state, and federal government agencies and commercial organizations.

For more than 30 years, ESRI has been the leading developer of GIS software with more than 300,000 clients worldwide. ESRI also provides consulting, implementation, and technical support services. In addition to its headquarters in California, ESRI has regional offices throughout the United States, international distributors in more than 90 countries, and more than 1,400 business partners. ESRI’s goal is to provide users with comprehensive tools to help them quickly and efficiently manage and use geographic information to make a real difference in the world around them.
