Wednesday April 5, 3:10 pm Eastern Time U.S. Options - Exodus Comms call volume stays up CHICAGO, April 5 (Reuters) - Volume in calls stayed strong and implied volatility moved up in options on Exodus Communications Inc. (NasdaqNM:EXDS - news) on Wednesday as the stock straddled both sides of even after Tuesday`s strong rebound. By 11:30 a.m. CDT (1630 GMT), roughly 5,265 calls and 670 puts had changed hands on all four U.S. options exchanges combined as the stock firmed to a gain after morning decline but then backed off again. That turnover compared with a total of 17,875 options -- roughly 13,310 calls and 4,565 puts -- traded on Tuesday and more typical recent daily volume of about 7,900 contracts. The bulk of Wednesday`s activity concentrated on the call side, with one customer seen buying a total of about 1,000 April 120 calls earlier on Wednesday when the stock was hovering near 125, said Joseph Ramirez, lead market maker with Omega Options at the Pacific Exchange. But put activity also picked up on Wednesday after Tuesday`s wild market swings that saw Exodus shares rebound from a steep loss to end up more than 14 at 136-15/16. ``There`s a lot of put buyers right now,`` Ramirez said. He said shares of the California-based Internet hosting service provider were more likely reflecting the wild ride in the overall stock market rather than any features of the stock, and the broad swings and uncertainty have helped pump up implied volatility as well. ``The volatility has gone up in all months,`` Ramirez said, noting that near-the-money implied vols have risen about 20 points to around 110 percent. Exodus Communications is expected to report on April 20 a loss of 26 cents a share during the first quarter, according to a First Call/Thomson Financial consensus estimate.
