"The Quiet American," Philip Noyce`s outstanding drama about how America became involved in Vietnam, which stars Michael Caine and Brendan Fraser, is being released by Miramax and opened recently to qualify for Academy Awards. In particular, Caine is being talked about as a likely best actor nominee in both the Golden Globe and Oscar races. It will expand its run in the coming months, going wider in mid-February when Oscar nominations are announced. Shortly afterwards, Intermedia`s suspense drama "The Life of David Gale," directed by Alan Parker and starring Kevin Spacey, Kate Winslet and Laura Linney, will go into release via Universal. Clearly, "Adaptation" marks the start of a period in which Intermedia`s profile in Hollywood is going to be on the rise. "In the next five months, we have eight or nine movies being released," Iwanyk said. "IEG, which is a sister company at Intermedia, is releasing `Gangs of New York` (via Miramax) in mid-December. `National Security,` a Martin Lawrence movie (directed by Dennis Dugan) that Sony`s distributing, is coming out in January. `Dark Blue,` the Ron Shelton movie we did with Kurt Russell and Ving Rhames and Scott Speedman, is terrific. That`s from UA on Feb. 21, the same date as `David Gale.` "Then (in April via Columbia) we have `Basic,` the John Travolta and Sam Jackson movie (directed by John McTiernan). And there`s a little movie called `Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines` (opening via Warner Bros. for July Fourth weekend, directed by Jonathan Mostow and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger). And `Mindhunters` (which) turned out really fantastic, that Dimension`s releasing in August (directed by Renny Harlin and starring L.L. Cool J. and Val Kilmer)." In addition, there are a few other Intermedia titles coming later in the year, including the now in postproduction serial killer thriller "Suspect Zero" for Paramount, directed by E. Elias Merhige and starring Aaron Eckhart and Ben Kingsley. |
