HIER DER ARTIKEL:

Moody`s may upgrade Thailand`s ratings

International ratings agency Moody`s Investors Service has said there is a good chance that its keenly awaited review of Thailand will result in a rise in the country`s credit rating to investment grade.
But Vincent Truglia, managing director of sovereign credit ratings at Moody`s, said an upgrade would not dispel the rating agency`s concerns about Thailand`s growing public-sector debt and industrial competitiveness.

Moody`s is the last major international credit rating agency that still rates Thailand as below investment grade - a ranking that in effect prevents some global fund managers from investing in the country.

The agency has announced that it is considering raising Thailand`s rating from Ba1 to Baa3 and Truglia said its review should be completed within one to three months.

He said Moody`s would pay particular attention to a sharp increase in public-sector debt since 1997, when Thailand was forced to devalue the baht, becoming the first victim of Asia`s currency crisis.

A deep recession set in, depleting tax revenues and requiring the government to step up spending to support the economy and the crippled financial system.
