Dutch ShrHolder Group: 2,000 Ahold Investors United So Far
Thursday February 27, 12:40 pm ET

AMSTERDAM -(Dow Jones)- Some 2,000 Ahold NV shareholders have teamed up with Dutch shareholder association Vereniging van Effectenbezitters, or VEB, and are considering legal action against the retailer, the group`s chairman told Dow Jones.

"We don`t know yet what we`ll do, or whether we`ll do anything, but there`s certainly a lot of interest among shareholders to start proceedings of some kind," chairman Peter Paul de Vries said.

The VEB promotes the interests of shareholders, and has frequently started inquiries into corporate goings-on, which have in some cases resulted in legal action against companies or executives.

De Vries said he didn`t know what amount of total share capital the group represents.

Ahold said Monday that it had overstated earnings in the past two years by EUR500 million, and said both its chief executive and chief financial officer had stepped down.

In the next few days, shares fell 75%. Several probes have been launched into the company`s news disclosure practices, and several lawsuits have been initiated.

The Euronext Amsterdam watchdog and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (News - Websites) are investigating the matter.
