Hier noch etwas zu Ahold und Tesco, ist zwar schon ein paar Tage alt, aber es zeigt, dass Tesco nachwievor Interesse am Thai-Geschäft von Ahold hat.

"Tesco tipped to snap up Ahold assets
26 February 2003, Evening Standard

TESCO could be a key beneficiary of any fire sale of assets by beleaguered Dutch supermarkets group Ahold. Ahold, the world`s third-largest grocer, stunned markets on Monday by saying auditors had uncovered massive accounting irregularities, forcing it to restate earnings. Ahold is expected to embark on a quick sale of assets.

They are expected to include about 100 supermarkets in Thailand, where Tesco has a major presence and is looking to expand. `It`s too early to say what may happen, but if the opportunity is there at the right price then we will take a look,` said a Tesco spokesman.

The two companies are already in a price war there, started by Tesco to take market share.

Ahold is partnered in Thailand by the influential Central-Retail Corporation, the core businesses of which are Central and Robinson department stores. Ahold operates the TOPS supermarket chain - the country`s largest - on the back of Robinson`s Department Stores.

Ahold`s assets could be an elegant solution for Tesco, which is facing a near-saturated Thai market. The country has 117 discount stores and 247 supermarkets.

But Tesco faces other obstacles. The government earlier this month approved town-planning laws to limit the expansion of hypermarkets.

Tesco also has been classified as a `dominant market player` and as such is subject to special scrutiny. Apart from US firms, foreigners are only allowed to operate in Thailand with a local partner as majority shareholder. "
