Ahold is expected to embark on a quick sale of assets. They are expected to include about 100 supermarkets in Thailand, where Tesco has a major presence and is looking to expand. `It`s too early to say what may happen, but if the opportunity is there at the right price then we will take a look,` said a Tesco spokesman. The two companies are already in a price war there, started by Tesco to take market share. Ahold is partnered in Thailand by the influential Central-Retail Corporation, the core businesses of which are Central and Robinson department stores. Ahold operates the TOPS supermarket chain - the country`s largest - on the back of Robinson`s Department Stores. Ahold`s assets could be an elegant solution for Tesco, which is facing a near-saturated Thai market. The country has 117 discount stores and 247 supermarkets. But Tesco faces other obstacles. The government earlier this month approved town-planning laws to limit the expansion of hypermarkets. Tesco also has been classified as a `dominant market player` and as such is subject to special scrutiny.
