EVENING REPORT: Australian Market Hits New Low

A lack of major announcements, combined with a public holiday in Melbourne, resulted in a quiet day for the Australian share market. Although major indices made slight gains in the morning session, the market pulled back in afternoon trade to finish down a small fraction of one per cent. The All Ordinaries index lost 3.9 points (0.1%) to close at 2711.1, and the S&P/ASX 200 lost 2.6 points (0.1%), ending the session at 2741.4, a new three-and-a-half year low for the market.

The Energy sector was the only one to make a significant gain, closing 1.6% higher thanks in part to a rise in Woodside Petroleum (up 14 cents to $10.31), a major consitutent. Woodside and BHP Billiton (up 10 cents to $8.75) announced confirmation of a deal between the North West Shelf partners and Korea Gas.

Of stocks in the S&P/ASX 20, the best performer of the day was Woodside, with Foster`s Group (up 5 cents to $4.21) also making a good showing. Once again, the worst result was from AMP (down 21 cents to $6.30), which hit a record low price of $6.28 during the session before closing at $6.30, a record low closing price for the stock.

The biggest financial story of the day was the fall by the Tokyo stock market. During today`s session, the Nikkei average fell below 8000 for the first time in 20 years. The market recovered a little late in the session, with the Nikkei finishing at 8042, a fall of 1.25%, and a new 20-year closing low.
