(Apr,15,2003 / SEC) Samsung Electronics Introduces Korea’s First “Silver Sterilization Washing Machine” - Nanosilver particles kill 99.9% of bacteria without having to boil the laundry. - Inside of washing machine tub is treated to kill existing bacteria or mold and to prevent new bacteria or mold formation. - Silver anti-bacterial coating functions exceptionally well during rinse cycle, earning the ”S” Mark. - Samsung, a leader in “green appliances,” is building a brand of health-promoting washing machines. Seoul, Korea—April 14th 2003: Samsung Electronics has been leading movement toward consumer electronics that protect the environment and human health. Recently, the company introduced the Ag Plus (model: SEW-3P105A) with silver sterilization power drum. More than 30 Samsung Electronics researchers worked for three years on the W6 billion project to become the first in Korea to apply the disinfectant and antibiotic properties of electrolytic silver nano-particles (Ag+) to a washing machine. Company officials expect the new product to be a big hit with health-conscious consumers. Set on “Silver Sterilization,” the silver sterilization system generates silver nano-particles that kill off most of the bacteria and mold in the laundry load without bringing the water to a boil. Thus less electricity is needed to achieve the same hygienic effect. The inside of the washing machine tub is also specially treated to kill bacteria and mold and suppress the odor and contamination that accompanies bacteria and mold formation. When the machine is set on “Silver Sterilization” the laundry load is covered with silver nano-particles during the rinse cycle. After the washing is complete, the clothes have been found to be completely devoid of bacteria, earning the “Sterilization Mark” from the Korea Testing & Research Institute for the Chemical Industry. The Ag Plus can also be set on the 2-stage, high-concentration “Deep Cleaning” mode for a 30% more-powerful cleaning effect for removing the most stubborn stains and smudges. A self-cleaning function also completely removes all particles from the tub after the laundry is done. The EZ Door system facilitates opening and closing. The product also has elegant-looking steel plate on the outside to enhance the interior décor of the home. Senior Vice President Lee Hak-soo of the Samsung Electronics Digital Appliance Division says, “Samsung has been a leader in the development of health-friendly and environment-friendly consumer electronics to address people’s health concerns. Our introduction of Korea’s first sterilization washing machine using nano-technology is further testimony to the level of our technological sophistication. In the future, we will remain in the forefront of the market by continuing to come out with new top-quality products that put the customers’ health and the environment first.” Samsung Electronics expects the domestic washing market to be 300,000 front loading models and one million fully-automatic and other top-loading models. The company aims to hold at least 50% of each of these market segments.
