Cubic Wins $6.4 Million Contract to Deliver First Automated Bus Fare Collection System in Puerto Rico SAN DIEGO and SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, Jun 12, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Cubic Transportation Systems, Inc., a subsidiary of San Diego-based Cubic Corporation (AMEX: CUB), will provide an advanced electronic bus fare collection system for San Juan, Puerto Rico, under a contract valued at $6.4 million awarded by the Metropolitan Bus Authority (MBA) for the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Department of Transportation and Public Works. The new system will employ the same advanced ticketing technology that Cubic provided for Tren Urbano, Puerto Rico`s first state-of-the-art rapid transit system. The new bus fare collection`s open platform system meets the MBA`s requirement that the two systems share a common ticket to offer transit riders seamless travel when switching been transit modes. Cubic will supply the MBA with a modern computer managed system. The system will consist of modular fareboxes which have been operationally proven in New York City and Vancouver. The fareboxes validate coins and process magnetic fare cards and are configured so that contactless smart card technology can be introduced in the future. A big part of the system is the central computer for data collection and reporting, which will enable the MBA to better manage fare collection revenues. "Cubic`s experience as the Tren Urbano system provider and its extensive record in regional integrated ticketing systems makes the company uniquely qualified to provide our system," said Adaline Torres, President of the Metropolitan Bus Authority. "A key component of the new fare collection system is the intermodality of the bus and rail equipment, which will add convenience and encourage more people in the San Juan region to use mass transit." Under this same contract, Cubic is also supplying its bus fare collection equipment and technology for a second bus operator, Metro Bus Uno, which is under contract to the MBA. Fare collection data from the 30 buses operated by Metro Bus Uno will be uploaded to the MBA central system as part of the fare collection revenue management process. "Cubic has worked closely with the transit professionals in Puerto Rico over the past several years, and we are pleased that we will continue to play a role in expanding and modernizing the region`s public transit systems," said Richard Johnson, president and chief executive officer, Cubic Transportation Systems, Inc. "Our fare collection systems offer the highest security and ease of use for maximizing revenues and attracting customers." Cubic Transportation Systems is the world`s leading system integrator for regional multi-operator intermodal ticketing systems, as well as the technology developer behind the Nextfare(TM) Solution Suite, an assortment of application tools enabling new and existing mass transit systems to support multiple contactless smart card and magnetic fare media technologies. Installations include New York and Chicago, where passengers use the same farecard to ride bus and rail. Cubic`s smart card systems are in North America (Washington, D.C. and Chicago), Europe and Asia. Every year, nearly 10 billion rides are taken worldwide using Cubic-designed fare collection systems in more than 40 major markets in cities on five continents, including London, Washington, D.C., Hong Kong, Chicago, New York, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Atlanta, San Francisco, Singapore and Miami. As part of the TranSys consortium, Cubic supplied and maintains the entire automated fare collection system including smart cards for the London PRESTIGE project. The corporation`s other major segment, Cubic Defense Applications, provides instrumented air and ground combat training systems, battle command training, simulations and simulation support for U.S. and allied military forces. The group also produces high technology avionics, data links and communications products for government and commercial customers, and a wide range of technical and logistics services.
