Server-basierte Software, Web-orientierte Software (Tarantella) und professionelle Dienste (?) umfassen sollen. Klingt noch ziemlich schwammig ...

SCO gives earnings warning, will reorganize

Server-based software maker The Santa Cruz Operation blamed lingering Y2K problems for a likely second-quarter sales and earnings slide, as the company announced a reorganization.

Revenue and earnings will be "significantly lower" than original estimates of $250 million in sales and the expected 8 cents a share in net income, the company said in a statement. SCO (SCOC: news, chart) executives didn`t explain how much of a slide they anticipate.

"I am disappointed that the market for our UNIX server software has not recovered as quickly as we expected following the Y2K period," said Doug Michels, SCO`s (SCOC: news, chart) chief executive. "However, I am encouraged by recent feedback from major channel partners that reseller activity has begun to return to previous levels."

SCO, which has had a spotty track record over the past few years, also said it plans to split into three separate divisions that will run more like individual companies. The company hopes to get in shape to turn a consistent profit.

The company will have a Server Division, dedicated to sales of UnixWare operating system and other server-based software. SCO`s Tarantella Division will sell the company`s Web-based software that lets companies use older data with newer applications. The company`s third division will focus on professional services.

All three divisional entities will be accountable for their own profitability and have the flexibility to forge alliances, pursue investments and drive product strategies, the company said in a statement.

SCO shares fell to 9 1/16 in after-hours trading. Shares fell 3/4 to 13 1/16 in Nasdaq trading Tuesday.
