Toronto - Ein geheimnisvolles Virus hat den kanadischen Gesundheitsbehörden zufolge in einem Altersheim in Toronto zum Tod von zehn Menschen geführt. 40 weitere Bewohner seien auf Grund der Infektion mit dem unbekannten Atemwegserreger in Krankenhäusern isoliert worden, sagten Behördenvertreter.
Die Lage sei aber unter Kontrolle, hieß es weiter. Die Opfer waren alle zwischen 50 und 95 Jahren alt. Angesichts des Alters der Heimbewohner sei nicht auszuschließen, daß die Totenzahl weiter steigen werde, sagte Behördenvertreter David McKeown.
Die Viruserkrankung weckte in Kanadas bevölkerungsreichster Stadt Erinnerungen an den Ausbruch der Lungenkrankheit Sars, bei dem vor zwei Jahren 44 Menschen gestorben waren. Die Behörden schlossen indes aus, daß es sich bei dem mysteriösen Virus um einen Erreger von Sars, Vogelgrippe oder Grippe handelt. Weitere Ergebnisse von Laboruntersuchungen würden erwartet.
Es sei aber durchaus möglich, daß das Virus niemals identifiziert werde, sagte McKeown. In dem betroffenen Heim infizierten sich insgesamt 70 Bewohner, zwölf Mitarbeiter und zwei Besucher mit dem Erreger. Es nimmt derzeit keine neuen Bewohner auf und ist für Besucher geschlossen.

As concerns over a bird flu epidemic surge, some people are seeking reassurance by getting prepared with cover — face coverage.
Manufacturers and distributors of the so-called nanomask say that with every report of bird flu concerns, sales spike. The masks, specifically designed to keep out biological hazards, including the bird flu virus, started selling swiftly following the comments last week of U.N. health chief David Nabarro who said that a mutation of the virus affecting Asia could trigger new, widespread outbreaks.

"We currently are attempting to produce between 100,000 and 200,000 masks a week," said Doug Beplate, founder and president of Emergency Filtration Products, based in Henderson, Nev. "Now they`re going out as soon as we make them. I don`t see us catching up to the demand in the near future."
Better Than n95 Standard?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that health care workers who handle contagious patients, including those infected by SARS and the avian flu, wear masks that meet the n95 rating under the CDC`s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. This means that the respirators filter out at least 95 percent of airborne particles during testing using a "most-penetrating" sized particle of 0.3 microns.
"Research indicates that n95 respirators provides higher protection than a standard surgical mask," said Roland Berry Ann, acting program manager for respiratory protection at NIOSH. "The fit of the mask is also very important. Workers have to keep in mind if you can breathe around the mask, then the filter isn`t going to help."
Beplate claims his masks do better thanks to a coating that reacts to contaminants at the mask surface. He says that electric charges within the nanoparticle coating and among a contaminant react, rendering the contaminant inactive.
"It works kind of like a magnet," Beplate said, but declined to go into further detail, citing copyright concerns.

The company has placed an initial order for the production of 500,000 filters from a West Coast based supplier. The filters, which are expected to be manufactured within the next several weeks, will then be shipped to EFP`s Henderson, Nevada facility where they will be enhanced with nanoparticles and packaged.

Concurrently, the company expects to receive 50,000 mask shells from Taiwan and has placed an initial order for an additional 100,000 mask shells from its Taiwanese supplier. The final assembly will be done in Henderson as soon as EFP receives the filters and mask shells. EFP plans to further increase its production capacity as demand dictates.

Ich denke, man sollte diesen Wert derzeit rein aus der (makabren) Spekulation auf eine Vogelgrippe-Epidemie heraus halten...und alls sie NICHT eintrifft, wieder weg damit, bevor er wieder in der Versenkung verschwindet.

Die Masken werden doch nicht nur für die Vogelgrippe produziert. Es gibt auch andere Bereiche wo man Geld verdienen kann z.B Militär (s.Artikel), diverse andere Krankheitausbrüche usw.
Im Quartalsergebnis wurde angegeben das die Produktion gesteigert wird und das es Anfragen von anderen Firmen gibt.
In Taiwan ist EMFP stark vertreten. EMFP macht einen gesunden Eindruck was die Wirtschaftlichkeit betrifft. Quartal zu Quartal steigern sie ihren Umsatz und das ist gut. Das Unternehmen muß sich halt noch behaupten und mehr in den Medien Werbung machen.

heute werden viele menschen in den usa auf die bedrohung aufmerksam...und oprah wird ihnen erzählen wie man sich schützen kann....
ich denke mal ddas sie MASKEN als schnellste einfachste und sicherste 1st protection lösung vorschlagen wird...
und EMFP stellt wahrscheinlich die sichersten maske her...

Will wearing a surgical mask protect me from an outbreak?
Dr. Osterholm says certain kinds of masks can clearly reduce your risk of contracting the bird flu. Normal, everyday surgical masks and pieces of cloth tied across your face will do little or nothing to stop the spread of the virus, he says.
Surgical masks prevent doctors from breathing directly on patients, but they have holes and vents on the sides to keep air flowing freely through the mask. Special types of masks (like the N95 Mask Dr. Osterholm is holding above) have sealed sides that can block out contaminated air.
But, even with this kind of mask on, you`re still at risk, Dr. Osterholm cautions. The bird flu virus can live outside the mask for two to three days. After one wear, you have to properly dispose of the mask to avoid contact with harmful germs.
There is one more problem with the masks…there won`t be enough to go around, Dr. Osterholm says. Pandemics can last for up to two years, and since many of our medical supplies are shipped from overseas sources, Dr. Osterholm predicts that America will run out of masks, prescription drugs and other necessities before the threat is over.
Even Dr. Osterholm won`t be safe. "I have to be honest and say I don`t have enough masks that would get me through [a pandemic]," he says. "So in a sense it`s as if I almost had a spare tire—but not quite."

Ich halte es für ausgemachten Blödsinn, diese oder andere Masken zu kaufen, denn das Virus wird nur durch direkten Kontakt mit einem erkrankten Vogel übertragen.
In der Hysterie verlieren allerdings viele Menschen die Fähigkeit zu denken.
ebenso ist Tamiflu völlig wirkungslos bei Vogelgrippe, es kann höchstens die Symptome ein bischen mildern, trotzdem wird es gekauft wie verückt.
Das alles ist reine Abzockerei.
