Business software firm i2 Technologies (NASDAQ:ITWO) just released its third-quarter earnings results. That by itself is not news since we`re in the midst of earnings season. It`s not even odd that the company missed the consensus analyst estimate by five cents and missed Wall Street`s revenue estimate - that sometimes happens. Or even that the stock is down on that news in after-hours trading. What is odd in my estimation is what preceded the earnings report. ITWO finished the regular session at 20.90, up 2.44 or 13.2 percent. The stock rose steadily all day ahead of this evening`s earnings release. That sharp rise suggested to me that some believed the company would surpass expectations. In fact, at 3:20 p.m. eastern time, a huge spike in volume caused the price to jump from 19.86 to more than 21 in less than five minutes. When that type of volume generates a leap like that, it`s usually buying. Well, after missing on earnings and revenue, the stock is trading down almost 22 percent in after-hours trading from its regular session close of 20.90. Do you think someone would like to have that trade back?

I2 Technologies 3Q Profit Drops 50 Pct.

DALLAS (AP) - i2 Technologies Inc., a maker of supply chain management software used by manufacturers, on Monday reported its third-quarter profit slid 50 percent, hurt by a steep drop in contract and services revenue.

The per-share and revenue results missed analysts` target, and i2 shares sank $4.85, or 23.2 percent, to $16.05 after the close of regular trading.

Net income applicable to common shareholders fell to $8.6 million, or 33 cents per share, from $17.1 million, or 75 cents per share, a year ago.

Revenue slumped 38 percent to $69.2 million from $111.1 million a year ago.

Wall Street had expected earnings of 38 cents per share, the average of three analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial, on projected sales of $85.1 million.

Contract revenue dropped to $899,000 from $29.2 million last year, while services revenue fell 25 percent to $20.2 million from $26.8 million a year ago. Revenue from software licenses declined 16 percent to $14.6 million from $17.4 million.
