Erinnern Sie sich noch an meinen Kommentar im Profit Radar vom 28. Juni? Ich habe zugegeben, nicht dem Rat des fast 80-jährigen selbst ernannten Medizinexperten aus dem Vatikan gefolgt zu sein. Und das war auch richtig so. Denn dazwischen liegen über 30% Kursgewinn.

Im Profit Radar vom 28. Juni habe ich geschrieben, dass bei den beiden wichtigsten US-Stammzellen-Aktien Aastrom Bioscience (ASTM-Nasdaq) und StemCells (STEM-Nasdaq)der erste Durchbruch ist gelungen, medizinisch und charttechnisch. Das hat sich jetzt bestätigt.

Beide Aktien, die immer noch als sehr spekulativ eingestuft werden müssen, sind jetzt in den anerkannten und von vielen Investoren beobachteten Small-Cap-Index Russell 3000 aufgenommen. Das ist ein weiterer Fortschritt. Denn damit werden beide Aktien mit einem Schlag auch bereiten Schichten von Investoren bekannt und sind nicht mehr länger nur Favoriten von Wissenschaftler und Medizinern.

1 Dec 2005, 16:43 GMT - Aastrom`s tissue repair cell (TRC) product, a proprietary bone marrow-derived adult stem cell product, will be used in posterior-lateral lumbar spinal fusions for treatment of degenerative spondylolisthesis. This is the company`s second FDA approved, human clinical trial for local bone regeneration using TRCs.

The primary purpose of the trial is to confirm that Aastrom`s TRC product, when used as a bone graft, is safe for use in posterior-lateral lumbar spinal fusion surgery, and is able to generate new bone at the fusion site, based on defined radiographic and clinical data.

Spine fusion is a procedure in which new bone tissue is induced to fuse two or more vertebrae together to treat conditions such as fractures of the vertebrae, or ruptured or lost disks. Current therapy uses surgically transplanted bone tissue, as well as other artificial bone materials and bone growth factors, to induce the growth of new bone tissue.

Aastrom proposes to use its TRCs in combination with a carrier matrix to induce sufficient bone growth to fuse or merge two vertebrae in the lower back, and potentially eliminate the requirement for other more invasive or less effective approaches. By stabilizing the spine, this procedure reduces debilitating back pain, and helps a patient regain more normal use of their legs.

"With clinical studies already using TRCs to generate jaw bone and to repair severe bone fractures, we are very enthusiastic about this new FDA approved study to extend the evaluation of TRCs to a third type of bone tissue," noted Dr Douglas Armstrong, CEO and chairman of Aastrom. "We are also gratified that this study is being conducted by an outstanding clinical team led by Dr Herkowitz at Beaumont Hospital."

[New Technology]Tune-up for Human - Stem Cell Stocks
Everyday I have been driving my 94 Nissan minivan to work. Leaking oils and squeaking sound from different places remind me maybe it is time for me to order some new parts such as radiator for the van.

So if an old broken car can become a work horse again by ordering a new part, why not us - the human being? Well now I probably am hearing laughs all over the place as if I am talking about sci-fi or Frankenstein. Yes it seems impossible today. By definition, stem cell is an undifferentiate cell found among differentiated cells in tissue or organs that can renew itself and can differentiate to become major specialized cell types for tissue or organ. In plain English this means you can grow cell for your heart or ear out of these type of cells. This may not sound too exciting to you however t othe medical scientists this sound too good to be true as now instead of relying on traditional organ transplate that will require someone to sacrifice part of his or her organ now you can grow the organ from the laboratory, just like getting a new auto part for the car instead of getting one from a used car.

Best of all is that this new way of organ transplant, where the organ will be grow from the cell in your own body, should prevent problems such as organ rejection which occur in traditional organ transplant. With such a promising technology millions of investment have been poured into research centers and firms that are focusing on stem cell research. After state government such as California ok the study of stem cell research, stem cell related stocks become the highlight and were gaining as much as 300% in a short amont of time.

Now as the stem cell hype gone and stock prices for the stem cell researchers are back to normal it is probably a good time to put them in your portfolio. Here are some of the companys doing stem cell research:

Geron Corporation (GERN): the stem cell company with the largest market cap, about 588 millions. The Menlo Park, CA based biopharmaceutical firm is using stem cell technology for cancer treament. The stock price has been sitting flat around $9 per share since mid October.
StemCells In. (STEM): a well known company on stem cell research. The Palo Alto, CA based company is mainly focused on stem cell based therapies to treat diseases of nervous system and liver. The stock went as high as $6 in January this year from the low of $1.5 last September. Recently the stock is showing weaknesses so investor should take extra caution when investing in the stock.
Aastrom Biosciences (ASTM): the Ann Arbor, MI based biotech firm is the leading developer on treament of severe bone fractures using TRC, tissue repair cells. The stock was also day trader`s favorite when it sky-rocketted from $1 per share in December last year to $4 per share in January this year. Now the stock is trading at $2.13 per share which should be a great entry point.
ViaCell Inc. (VIAC): the Cambridge, MA based biotechnology firm specializes in technology that enables isolation, purification and expansion of stem cell population. The company also developed stem cell therapeutic for bone marrow. Since went IPO in January, the stock hasn`t done well and is now trading near the 52 week low of $5.42 per share more than 60% off the IPO high of $14 per share.

Umbilical cords are a rich, non-controversial source of stem cells. When President Bush signs the law tomorrow, the number of cord blood units and cord blood stem cells available for treating patients and expanding research will greatly increase.

Thousands have been successfully treated with cord blood stem cells for more than 67 diseases including Leukemia and Sickle Cell Anemia - which affects thousands of African Americans. The infusion of federal funds will make this medical miracle available to thousands more and will ensure that research continues so that this source of stem cells can treat many other debilitating diseases.

800fach vermehrte Stammzellen

Mesenchymale Stammzellen können sich durch Teilung vermehren und unterschiedliche neue Funktionen übernehmen, etwa als Muskel-, Knochen-, Knorpel-, Gefäß- oder Nervenzellen. Der Körper setzt sie dort ein, wo Reparaturen nötig oder wo Zellen kurzlebig sind. Doch nur eine hohe Dosis gewährleistet Erfolg in der Stammzelltherapie - etwa 500 ml bis 1.500 ml Knochenmark. Diese Entnahme belastet aber die Patienten sehr. Nur 50 ml benötigen die RUB-WissenschaFirma Aastrom Bioscience, USA ftler. Mit dem neuen Verfahren reichern sie die wenigen Stammzellen an und bringen sie zum Wachsen. Bei dem speziellen, automatisierten Prozess nutzen sie das patentierte Zellkultursystem der Firma Aastrom Bioscience, USA. Durchblutungsstörungen sind die häufigste Ursache, warum man bei Zuckerkranken Gliedmaßen amputieren muss ("Diabetiker-Fuß").

Uni-Institut mit großer Erfahrung

Der Uni-Blutspendedienst OWL ist Teil des Institutes für Laboratoriums- und Transfusionsmedizin des HDZ. Das Institut verfügt über jahrelange Erfahrungen bei der Herstellung von Blutprodukten und hat mit dem ausgezeichneten Verfahren von der Bezirksregierung in Detmold und der Bundesoberbehörde, dem Paul-Ehrlich-Institut, die Genehmigung erhalten, Stammzellpräparate für die Behandlung von Patienten herzustellen.

Aastrom Biosciences profitierte hingegen von einer Entscheidung der Gesundheitsbehrde (FDA). Das Unternehmen bekam fr seine Zelltherapie zur Reparatur von Gewebe den Orphan Drug Status fr die Behandlung einer Strung, bei der der Knochen nicht mehr zur Regeneration befhigt ist. Mit diesem Status kann Aastrom mit verschiedenen Vergnstigungen rechnen, wozu auch der schnellere Markteintritt des Produktes fr die genannte Indikation zhlt. Mit einem aktuellen Kurs von $2,23 ist das Papier von Aastrom aber noch immer attraktiv.
