Bakrie to provide `3G services` using CDMA technology
Failing to win a government license for third generation (3G) mobile services last week has not undermined PT Bakrie Telecom`s determination to enter the high-speed data transmission market.
Bakrie Finance`s president, Anindya N. Bakrie, said in Jakarta on Monday the company planned this year to adopt the CDMA-based Evolution Data Optimized (EVDO) system, the latest version of CDMA 2000-1X, which would allow it to provide high-speed data transmission services as good as those offered by 3G technology.
"With the launch of EVDO, we will show that Bakrie Telecom remains committed to providing high-speed data transmission services," he said.
Bakrie Telecom and PT Telkom were both outbid in the 3G auction held by the government last week by three other operators, PT Telkomsel, Indosat and Excelcomindo, which each took one of the three frequencies blocks being auctioned.
"We can still use our current frequency (800 MHz) and our transceivers. We only need to add some equipment, such as EV-DO carriers to our transceivers, in order to provide high-speed data transmission services," Anindya said, adding that using WCDMA technology -- the GSM-based 3G mobile telecommunications technology -- in providing high-speed data transmission services would be far more costly for the company as it did not possess a GSM base.
If Bakrie Telecom had won a 3G license last week, the company would have also had to invest a lot of money to pay the frequency license fee and construct the GSM infrastructure, he said.

Bakrie Telecom (Fixed wireless operator in West
Java)
1) Bakrie Telecom’s recent promotions have been very
successful in Jakarta and Bandung. Although Bakrie is
currently restricted by its license conditions to operate only in
Jakarta and surrounding areas, the company has recently
launched aggressively priced services with reasonable
success in the past 2 months. The run-rate for new
connections is running high at 3,000 per day compared with
only 500 in 1Q05. In particular, the introduction of the
concept of “Talk Time” and special rebates for incoming calls
has been well-received by the market since other operators
sell cards based on number of pulses, which often creates
confusion in the minds of the user.
2) Bakrie is banking on MVNO agreement with Indosat for
further service expansion, we are less optimistic. Bakrie
Telecom plans to expand its services to 15 more cities in
2006 and given its MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator)
agreement with Indosat, expects to launch services in a total
of 30 new cities in 2006. We are skeptical on Bakrie’s MVNO
agreement with Indosat for two reasons. First, we note that
only a MOU has been signed and the terms have not been
finalized, which could take more time. Second, we note that
Indosat has historically de-emphasized its fixed wireless
business and is looking at only 500-750K net additions in
2006, which remains far below the 2.5 million net additions
target of TelkomFlexi.
3) Despite its small scale, Bakrie’s financials remain
attractive. Bakrie is EBITDA positive and expects to breakeven
in 2006 at the net profit level, with 2007 expected to be
the first full year with positive net income. After the recent
IPO, the balance sheet remains healthy with net debt to equity
of 0.2-0.25x.
4) Expansion plans remain modest vis-à-vis the
significant market opportunity. Bakrie plans to spend an
aggregate of US$250-350 million over the next five years with
a target subscriber base of 5 million. While this is certainly
achievable, we question the long-term viability of a regional
fixed wireless operator. Our base case assumption is for
industry consolidation to occur in 3-4 years with Bakrie
Telecom participating in the consolidation to expand its footprint
on a nationwide basis.
5) Key elements of Bakrie’s strategy: No frills service with
a cost-focus. Bakrie Telecom believes the costs of most
telecom service providers in Indonesia are exaggerated and
partly explains the high prices for the service. Bakrie intends
to position itself as a no-frills service provider with “consumer”
(not technology) focus. At the same time, in order to have a
sustainable business model, the company aims to maintain a
lean organization with superior cost structure compared to the
incumbents. Most importantly, the company believes the
telecom industry is very dynamic and there is need for
constant disruption in the market in the form of new and more
attractive products and services.
6) Availability of CDMA handsets is a disadvantage, but
eroding. Bakrie Telecom has entered into an agreement with
“Nexian”, which is a second-hand handset aggregator.
Nexian purchases mother-boards from second-hand handsets
in China and Korea, but refurbishes them in Indonesia
including new keypads. These handsets retail at Rp250-300K
and have been one of the key reasons for the strong take-up
of Bakrie’s service in the past few months.

Bakrie Telecom said in a statement that the company's gross revenues rose by 131 percent to Rp 588 billion in the first nine months from Rp 254.41 billion in the same period last year, while the company's net revenues rose by 159 percent to Rp 427 billion.
Bakrie Telecom's president director Anindya N. Bakrie said that the sharp increase in revenues was due to a significant increase in the number of firm's subscribers.
He said that the number of subscribers to its CDMA-based Esia fixed wireless service reached 1.3 million as of September, as compared to 307,000 in the same month of 2005.
"With this significant increase, we have decided to revise up our subscriber-numbers target for this year to 1.5 million from 1.3 million previously," he said.
At present, Bakrie Telecom's Esia fixed wireless services provide coverage in a number of major cities in West Java, including Bogor, Serang, Cirebon, Purwakarta, Tasikmalaya, Ciamis and Cianjur, in addition to Jakarta, Tangerang and Depok.

Nochmal Vorstellung und Vision Bakrie Telecom:
Anindya Bakrie
Just 32 years old, but armed with an MBA from Stanford University, Bakrie is following in the footsteps of his father, Aburizal Bakrie, who headed Bakrie & Brothers before entering politics by joining the Cabinet of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
Bakrie is also CEO and president director of PT Cakrawala Andalas Televisi (ANTV), which recently entered into a joint venture with Star Group, a wholly owned subsidiary of media tycoon Rupert Murdoch's News Corp.
He is also the COO of Capital Managers Asia Pte Ltd, Singapore. Prior to that, he was deputy to the COO and managing director of PT Bakrie & Bakrie Brothers Tbk. He also served as a financial analyst in Salomon Brothers Inc, New York.
A pioneer in wireless telephone services since 1995 by offering Wireless Local Loop (WLL) services under the brand name Ratelindo, which utilizes E-TDMA technology (developed by Hughes Network System, US), the company changed its name to PT Bakrie Telecom in 2003. It then launched a new limited mobility service under the brand Esia, using the latest CDMA 2000-1X technology.
In his view, Indonesian consumers will now start focusing on how much talktime they get per rupiah instead of how much they pay per pulse.
Esia charges just 3,000 rupiah per hour of talktime in the region that it covers, which the company claims is the lowest in the country. "We are the AirAsia of the telecommunications industry," said Bakrie, referring to the budget carrier that has shaken up the airline industry. Other CDMA providers in Indonesia are PT Telkom with Telkomflexi, PT Mobile-8 Telecom with Fren, and PT Indosat with Star-one.
He believes that telecommunications is a birthright for every Indonesia. According to him, consumers deserve reliable yet affordable telecommunications services.
"It is our belief that 'thinking out of the box' is the main recipe for success in this industry. We call it disruptive innovation and it has been ingrained so deeply in our corporate culture that it has become our business DNA," he added.
He is convinced that one day most Indonesians here or abroad will use a Bakrie Telecom service to talk, message, surf, mail, watch TV, send photos, and do financial transactions. "Hopefully, we will be an integral part of most Indonesians' daily life," said Bakrie, a rising star in Indonesia's telecommunications industry nowadays, optimistically.http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/blog/toekangit/0,39056105,61955…

Bakrie Telcom currently has only a million subscribers, but last month the government granted the politically connection company a license to operate nationally, expanding on its original concession, which restricted it to the archipelago's main island of Java. Drajad Wibowo, a member of the parliamentary budget commission, has recently warned that foreign dominance in the national telecommunication industry could have dangerous national-security implications and has urged the government to buy back Temasek's Indosat shares.

Bakrie Telecom sells towers to up investment
Wed, 12/17/2008 11:03 AM | Business
Shareholders of PT Bakrie Telecom, which operates the CDMA brand Esia, have given the all clear for the company's plan to sell 543 telecommunication towers, to be used partly to help finance its expansion for next year.
"We hope to gain Rp 380.22 billion (US$34 million) from the sale," president director Anindya Bakrie said after a shareholder meeting Tuesday.
Six tower providers -- Solusi Tunas Pratama, Tower Bersama, Protelindo, Retower, Padi Mekatel and Powertel -- have indicated their interest in the offer, Anindya said.
Anindya said the towers were being sold to boost the company's operational efficiency and to achieve its target of $200 million in capital expenditure for next year.
Bakrie Telecom has said it plans to spend $600 million in capital expenditure between 2008 and 2010.
By the end of this year, the company will have spent $238 million for capital expenditure, partly coming from the Rp 3 trillion it secured from a rights issue earlier this year.
"Aside from the $34 million from the towers, we plan to finance next year's capital expenditure from the unused proceeds of the rights issue, internal cash and a $50 million vendor financing deal," Anindya said.
A vendor financing scheme is a form of loan given by a company which the recipient must use to purchase goods produced by the lender -- which in this case is PT Huawei Tech Investment, the local unit of the Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei Technologies.
The partnership involves Bakrie Telecom purchasing Huawei's cellphones and bundling them with Bakrie Telecom's Esia chips.
As of the end of the third quarter of 2008, Bakrie Telecom had posted a net profit of some Rp 1.5 trillion, from Rp 849 billion last year. This 6.9 percent profit growth was supported by it almost doubling its customers, who currently number around 6.5 million.
It also plans to buy 7.2 percent of its shares in the market, putting aside some Rp 600 billion for the buyback scheme.
"We have bought back 2.4 percent of our shares so far, and we are hoping to reach the 7.2 percent target next year," Anindya said.
Many phone operators here are selling their towers, choosing instead to lease them, following a government regulation requiring each telecommunication tower to be shared by more than one operator.
Bakrie Telecom said that after the sale of the 543 towers it would still have around 150 towers.

Bakrie Telecom has won a tender to provide domestic long-distance (DLD) call services in the country, augmenting the international fixed telephony calls tender it won last year. Bakrie’s bid was accepted after rival telco Mobile-8 Telecomfailed to submit a bid bond, Tempo Interactive reports. During the selection, Bakrie Telecom committed to build the infrastructure for its SLJJnetwork in at least in 58 cities or regencies, with 15 of them in eastern Indonesia, said Gatot S Dewa Broto, a spokesperson for the Communication and Information Department in a press release. (Telegeography)
This is positive for BTel which will enable the telco save costs by carrying its own DLD traffic, instead of having to pass DLD traffic to existing DLD operators Telkomor Indosat. We understand BTel will save Rp50bn p.a. or 8% of its FY09 PBT.

Telkom considers move for Bakrie Telecom
Indonesia's dominant telecommunication group PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom) is considering a move to acquire a stake in rival telco Bakrie Telecom, Reuters reports Telkom finance director Sudiro Asno as saying.
According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Bakrie Telecom has been at the centre of speculation surrounding its ownership for more than a year. In October 2008 the Indonesian family-run business group Bakrie & Brothers announced it was looking to sell stakes in several of its major subsidiaries in order to settle debts thought to be worth USD1.2 billion. The group's announcement confirmed speculation that it is in financial trouble after becoming 'overleveraged'. Bakrie & Brothers did not confirm at the time how it planned to raise enough money through share sales and still retain control, but the assets on offer reportedly included Bakrie Telecom. Then at the end of October 2008, Indonesia's stock exchange suspended trading in shares of Bakrie Telecom amid media rumours about a planned stake sale in the company. In a statement the exchange said: 'To avoid an unnatural movement of the shares the stock exchange decided to halt the trading in the company's shares.' At the time, Sinar Mas Group was rumoured to be planning to buy a 20%-60% equity stake in Bakrie Telecom at IDR200 per share. The company's stock last traded at IDR67, having lost more than 70% of its value in just a month. Bakrie & Brothers, which controls a 49% stake in Bakrie Telecom, subsequently denied that it was looking to sell its stake in the operator. In July this year however, CommsUpdate reported that Bakrie, which owns the Esia brand of wireless communication products and services, revealed plans to acquire another telecoms company in the country or merge with a rival in 2010. The move came in the face of what the company considered ‘intense competition’ in the market.
