      Amazon Takes Aim at Apple

      By Daniel Del'Re
      TheStreet.com Staff Reporter
      12/27/2007 2:01 PM EST

Online retailer Amazon.com (AMZN - Cramer's Take - Stockpickr) stepped up its attempt to challenge Apple's (AAPL - Cramer's Take - Stockpickr) dominance in the music downloading market.

The company said on Thursday that its music downloading service, called Amazon MP3, will release tracks from Warner Music Group artists available without digital rights management software that prevents copying and sharing. This expands Amazon MP3's library to 2.9 million DRM-free songs at prices of 89 cents or 99 cents per download.

Amazon's expanded catalog elevates the company's stature as a player in the market for digital music. Analysts see the move as an attempt to remain a relevant music retailer as sales of compact discs grind to a halt that media trackers from the Yankee Group say could come as soon as 2012. But Amazon MP3, which debuted in September 2007, has arrived late to the game and will be hard pressed to dislodge Apple.

Premillennium movers like Napster scared recording labels into rallying behind the DRM-protected downloading service that Apple devised with its 2001 launch of iTunes and the iPod, and which catapulted the company to a commanding and unrivaled market share.

Apple now holds roughly 80% of the market for both online music downloads and sales of digital music players, and has sold over 100 million iPods and several billion songs from iTunes.

"I think Amazon is taking a step toward becoming more competitive, but it's only a baby step," says Michael Goodman, a Yankee Group analyst. "In order for somebody like Amazon to appeal to iPod users, they have to be significantly better than iTunes."

(Analyse vom 27.12.2007)

Amazon, Apple line up new download offerings

      By Rex Crum, MarketWatch
Last update: 11:30 a.m. EST Dec. 27, 2007Print E-mail RSS Disable Live Quotes
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) - Two of the biggest rivals in the market for digital downloads of music and videos went at each other Thursday as Amazon.com Inc. added to to its online music arsenal and reports surfaced about a new video-renting deal involving Apple Inc.

AMZN 94.38, +1.53, +1.7%) said that starting Thursday, it would begin offering downloads from Warner Music Group Corp.'s (WMG 6.06, +0.09, +1.5%) song catalog. The addition of Warner gives Amazon nearly 3 million songs in its library, with most songs costing 89 cents to 99 cents each. Amazon opened its Amazon MP3 store in September.
Amazon also offers its songs without digital-rights management [DRM] software, which the company said allows the music to be played on most personal digital music players, including Apple's line of iPods and the iPhone.
(AAPL 201.36, +2.41, +1.2%) , for its part, offers about 2 million song of its 6-million song library as DRM-free through what the company calls iTunes Plus. In addition to the song catalog, Apple sells episodes of 550 million TV shows and and more than 500 movies through iTunes.
However, Apple's adhering to a policy of only selling videos may be about to change. The Financial Times reported that Apple has struck a deal with News Corp.'s (NWS:news corp cl b
NWS 21.59, -0.23, -1.0%) 20th Century Fox studio that will allow for movie rentals through Apple's iTunes service.
Apple spokespersons didn't immediately return calls for comment.
The report said that the new video-on-demand offerings would let consumers rent and download the movies for a limited period. Currently, Apple only sells movies that can then be watched on any computer using iTunes, on iPods and iPhones, and on digital televisions that use the Apple TV set-top box.
The FT said the deal would be officially announced at the Macworld Expo in San Francisco. Apple CEO Steve Jobs is scheduled to give the show's keynote address on Jan. 15, and he often uses the show as a bully pulpit to discuss Apple's successes and unveil new company products and initiatives.
In early trading, Apple shares rose $2.86 to $201.80, while Amazon rose $1.31 a share to $94.19. News Corp. shares gave up 22 cents to trade at $21.61. News Corp. owns MarketWatch, the publisher of this report.

Amazon Looks Ready to Make a Run

posted on: December 27, 2007 | about stocks: AMZN Print Email
Remember that Dixie Chick's song "Ready to Run"? That is the tune that kept ringing in my head as I looked at the chart of Amazon.com (AMZN).

This company reported stellar earnings last quarter, but the stock ran up so much ahead of the report that it had nowhere to go but lower. Since then, and despite a difficult market, the stock has made a full recovery.

On Wednesday, AMZN was the only retailer that said that holiday sales were going well. In fact, it said that it was the best holiday season ever for the company. Internet retailers are finally garnering a significant share of holiday shares, and AMZN is capitalizing on that trend. I know that I shop on Amazon.com all the time, both for books as well as electronics. I love the site.

The stock looks poised for more upside action. I think the stock will be back at new highs by the time it reports earnings in January, and I expect that it will report strong earnings again.

This is what made AMZN my Stock of the Day, and I will be looking for any pullback to buy.

      Gadget-Hungry Consumers Flow To Amazon

Andrew Farrell, 12.26.07, 11:45 AM ET

American consumers went high tech this holiday season. Instead of hitting brick-and-mortar retailers for socks and towel racks, they increased their spending online for consumer electronics like global positioning devices and the Nintendo Wii video-game console.

Shares of Amazon.com (nasdaq: AMZN - news - people ) rose 78 cents, or 0.9%, to $91.79, Wednesday morning, after the Internet retailer announced it enjoyed its best holiday season ever. The company's business peaked on Dec. 10, when customers ordered more than 5.4 million items, or 62.5 per second.

The strong holidays came even as other retailer struggled. Shares of Target (nyse: TGT - news - people ) lost $1.56, or 3.0%, to $50.91, on Wednesday. Late Monday, the retailer cut its sale projections.

Goldman Sachs (nyse: GS - news - people ) analyst Adrianne Shapira said consumers spent less this holiday season in Target's "sweet spot" which is home items and clothing. Instead, they spent more in consumer electronics categories.

U.S. consumers instead went to Amazon. The company's top sellers included Garmin (nasdaq: GRMN - news - people ) global positioning systems, Canon (nyse: CAJ - news - people ) cameras, and Samsung high-definition televisions.

Also helping was big video-game sales. When it was in stock, Amazon sold 17 Nintendo (other-otc: NTDOY - news - people ) Wii systems per second. The best-selling video games were Nintendo's Super Mario Galaxy and Activision (nasdaq: ATVI - news - people )'s Call of Duty 4.

The strong Amazon results show pockets of resilience despite a tough consumer environment. U.S. consumers are facing elevated food and energy costs, tightened credit access, slipping home values, and a sluggish job market.

      Unfolding Amazon.com's Fluff

By Rick Aristotle Munarriz December 26, 2007

This morning's press release out of Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) reveals a lot of colorful -- yet practically useless -- anecdotes.

In the rare moments when the leading e-tailer had Nintendo (OTC BB: NTDOY.PK) Wii consoles in stock, they sold at a pace of 17 per second.

The company sold enough Hannah Montana wigs to outfit an entire audience at one of her many sold-out shows.
If you stack all of the GPS units that Amazon sold over the holidays end to end, you could connect New York City with Philadelphia.

We get it, Amazon. You're big. However, unless you tell me how many of those GPS orders were for Garmin (Nasdaq: GRMN) -- and what kind of slice of the overall GPS market you think you carved for yourself -- I'm left with animated images of wigged-out concertgoers and a bumpy road for Mets fans en route to see their team play on the road against the Phillies.

The real meat of the matter
Some of the more useful -- yet ultimately incomplete -- nuggets of information relate to Amazon's peak performance.

Forget Cyber Monday. Dec. 10 was Amazon's busiest day, taking in orders for 5.4 million items, or 62.5 items per second.
Its fulfillment operations peaked the day it shipped out 3.9 million units.
Its Amazon Customers Vote promotion, now in its second year, garnered 4.6 million votes from users who wanted a shot at getting great deals on limited supplies of showcased merchandise.
Amazon isn't telling us explicitly how well it fared over the telltale holiday shopping season, but it's giving us enough rope to lasso a ballpark projection. See, Amazon put out a similar release last year.

On its peak selling day last year -- which also happened to be the second Monday of December -- the company took in orders that "exceeded 4 million items." So on its busiest day this month, Amazon sold as much as 35% more in terms of unit volume.

Amazon's busiest fulfillment day last year found it sending out 3.4 million units. This year's winner is just 15% higher, but I would put more weight on the peak ordering day data (since shipments can be smoothed out while the snapshot of one-day demand is a better indicator). In other words, I'd expect the company's top-line growth to clock in within its guidance issued back in October. It was looking for net sales of $5.1 billion to $5.45 billion during the quarter, translating into a 28% to 37% advance from a year ago.

It may still exceed that sum, because we can't confuse units with sales. If Amazon is selling bigger-ticket items this year, net sales may even exceed the company's guidance. In that sense, it's heartening to see Amazon's top-sellers include pricy items like video game hardware, digital cameras, flat-screen televisions, and laptops.

Investors shouldn't dream of Amazon duplicating the Harry Potter-powered 41% net sales gain that the company scored in the third quarter, but it's not entirely out of the question if unit and average selling prices grow in tandem. In other words, I'm not going out on much of a limb in projecting that Amazon will top analyst expectations the way it has in each of the past five quarters.

Tell me something that I didn't know
You won't find a lot of news in the company's list of top-sellers within certain categories. I already spilled the beans earlier this month, as an addict to the company's best-seller lists. I had already told you that JAKKS Pacific's (Nasdaq: JAKK) EyeClops was the hot toy, and that Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) MacBooks and Nokia (NYSE: NOK) Internet tablets were the top computing buys.

Anyone with time to spare can spend the weeks leading up to Christmas sorting Amazon's categories to spit out the top-sellers. Certain areas like books and CDs will typically parallel weekly lists produced by The New York Times and Billboard, respectively, but you can learn plenty by exploring other categories, such as toys and electronics, to spot the trends before the rest of the market does.

So, sure, this morning's press release contains a lot of colorful fluff. You probably can't do a whole lot with the knowledge that Amazon sold enough auto wrenches to stretch all along the Daytona 500 track. However, when you add it all up, it virtually confirms that Amazon is coming through with another monster quarter as it further entrenches itself as the definitive online retailer.

As Hannah Montana sings, it truly is the best of both worlds, no matter where you get the wig.

      This Year's Biggest Nasdaq Winners

By Rick Aristotle Munarriz December 21, 2007

With 2007 coming to a close, you'll be seeing a lot of lists detailing the year's biggest winners and losers. CNNMoney decided to jump the gun and be fashionably early, digging into the components of several popular indices to determine the early victors.

I was skimming the article, and had to rub my eyes when I came across the list of the top performers within the weighted Nasdaq 100 index.

      2007

      Baidu.com (Nasdaq: BIDU)
      231%

      Intuitive Surgical (Nasdaq: ISRG)
      221%

      Foster Wheeler (Nasdaq: FWLT)
      176%

      Research In Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM)
      136%

      Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN)
      120%

      Source: Baseline, through Dec. 19.
Can you believe it? The two top dogs are active Rule Breakers recommendations. And I'm not talking about last-minute scorecard additions for the sake of abhorrent window-dressing. The growth-stock newsletter recommended Intuitive Surgical at a much lower price. Shares of the company behind the revolutionary da Vinci robotic arm, which is assisting in surgical procedures in more and more hospital operating rooms, have soared 628% higher since David Gardner singled out the company in spring 2005.

I was the one who recommended Baidu to subscribers 14 months ago. The stock has catapulted 360% higher in that time.

      Beyond the Breakers
We're not perfect. We didn't hop on Foster Wheeler. The industrial contractor and power-equipment supplier has had an amazing run in our absence. I also have to kick myself for missing out on Research In Motion. All year long, I figured that the iPhone and the vaporware Gphone would come to eat at the company's BlackBerry workhorse. It turns out that folks are using Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone in completely different ways from BlackBerry products. Oh, and Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Gphone wound up not being a cell phone at all, but an operating system platform.

As for Amazon, it's probably too big to be considered for the growth-stock service, though David has been singing the leading e-tailer's praises for years as a Motley Fool Stock Advisor selection.

Still, it's hard to resist jockeying for bragging rights when three of the biggest stars among the Nasdaq exchange's 100 beefiest players are newsletter recommendations.

      Scoring a 100
What's that? You feel that Baidu should be booted from the list because it only got added to the index earlier this month? It's a fair point. Apparently the major indices aren't beyond a little window-dressing themselves, in the form of annual re-rankings in December.

However, numbers do not lie. All five of these stocks came through with fantastic years, and investors should pay attention. Figuring out the catalysts that propelled these shares higher will make it that much easier to spot the 2008 winners early.

On the surface, it's hard to tie them all together. You would probably never find an engineering contractor, a robotic surgeon, and a Chinese online search expert at the same party. I can't even fathom the icebreaker that would be required to get that soiree swinging.

Want to know what all five companies do have in common? They have proven histories of topping the market's profit expectations. Intuitive Surgical and Amazon have beaten Wall Street's bottom-line targets in each of the past four quarters. Baidu, Foster Wheeler, and Research In Motion have lapped analysts in three of their past four quarters.

Collectively, the five winners have beaten earnings estimates in 17 of the past 20 quarters. And what's really impressive here is that they aren't just managing expectations to come in a penny or two ahead of the crowd. They are obliterating those targets.

And this isn't even rocket science. Intuitive Surgical has now blown past net income estimates for 20 straight quarters. I find myself writing the same quarterly recap every three months, just tacking on one more number to the end of the market-humbling streak.

This doesn't mean the list of the Nasdaq 100's biggest winners for 2008 will be a carbon copy of this year's list. I'm just suggesting that if it does somehow happen, you shouldn't be surprised.

Like the New England Patriots this year, until proven mortal, winners keep on winning.
