In the Heart of Gold Country This little company controls the heart of a prospective gold belt in one of the richest gold producing regions in the world.
PMI Ventures holds a dominant land position in the midst of one of the most active gold exploration and development regions in the world. Investments of more than $3 billion planned by three major gold companies confirm that Ghana is one of the top places in the world to find and develop gold deposits.
I recently returned from a tour of Ghana and PMI`s properties and was very impressed with what I saw. Investors who spend a few moments to read this account will quickly appreciate that PMI shareholders are exceptionally well positioned to benefit from the large scale developments in the gold industry in Ghana.
Drilling is just getting underway on a program that could soon confirm the value of PMI`s extensive property position. You see, PMI controls a 50 kilometer long portion of a gold belt that has the potential to replicate the riches of the adjacent trends.
That property position was assembled piece by piece over a six year period when few people had any interest in gold. Millions of dollars was previously invested in that property, but by several companies on a piecemeal basis.
That highly prospective property is now for the first time being looked at in a comprehensive manner. The highly qualified management and geological team at PMI are ideally suited to carry this project to the next level.
The larger gold companies that are already mining in the country, and those looking for a way to get in on the rich gold deposits of Ghana, are now paying close attention to this junior explorer. The reason is that PMI geologists, building on the prior work, are turning up gold on their property lots of gold.
Building On A Decade Of Work
Millions of dollars was spent on the properties now held by PMI, but by several small companies, all with a narrow focus. PMI took the first big picture view of this extensive gold belt.
The company drilled nine holes earlier this year to test its revised geological thinking. The success of that drilling led to some smart investors putting up C$2.5 million to extend the drilling. That program, just now getting underway, holds the promise of confirming a major company sized gold deposit.
That project in itself could be a company maker for a junior, yet it represents only one of the many prospective zones on the vast property held by PMI.
A district scale gold play in a country as popular with major gold companies as Ghana would be simply irresistible to the majors. Before getting into the specifics of the PMI property position and the people behind the company, it is worth a moment to appreciate why the biggest gold companies in the world are concentrating so much investment in this small country.
Elephant Country ... In More Ways Than One Ghana already hosts two of the largest gold mines in the world, both of which are being expanded. In addition, U.S. based Newmont is set to begin development of two gold mines in Ghana, further confirming the rich endowment of gold and the very favorable investment climate in the country.
I recently returned from a six day tour of Ghana. I met with many people, including the Minister of Mines and several senior government and industry people. I toured two of the biggest gold mines in the world and saw several other mining operations. (A first-hand account of the tour is included in a separate article later in this issue.)
Seeing the country first hand made it abundantly clear why there is such a concentration of spending in one country: Ghana has a rich concentration of gold and it has one of the more favorable investment climates in the world.
That tour also confirmed that PMI is extremely well positioned to be a major benefactor of the gold rush in Ghana, with potential for a huge payoff for shareholders.
The country long known as the Gold Coast is a fascinating place, and much different than most people believe it to be.
A Long History Of Gold Production Gold has been mined continuously in Ghana for more than 1,000 years, and there is evidence that the first mining took place more than 5,000 years ago. Most of the gold produced in the world from 1450 to 1600 came from the region that was then called the Gold Coast and is today Ghana. Medieval castles and other fortifications still in place remind one of the importance of this land in history.
Cumulative gold production from the country now totals more than 50 million ounces, ranking Ghana as one of the major gold producing nations. Presently, the country hosts several producers including two of the largest gold mines in the world.
Gold Deposits Among The Largest In The World Ghana`s rich endowment of gold originated more than 2 billion years ago. Repeated uplifts of a series of formations known as the Birimian volcanics shed sedimentary deposits into the Kumasi Basin to form the Tarkwa sedimentary units. Massive placer gold deposits were formed as the gold rich sediments accumulated in the basin.
Readers may recognize the parallel to the Witwatersrand Basin in South Africa, which is by far the largest depository of gold in the world. While the Wits remained largely undisturbed for 2 billion years, the Kumasi Basin has been geologically active. Most recently, beginning about 130 million years ago, the crust of the earth was split apart to divide Africa from South America. Those tectonic processes broke up the original basin.
Portions of the original basin remained intact, and host several mines including the massive Tarkwa mine and the smaller nearby Damang mine. The Ghana operations are the biggest contributor to Gold Fields bottom line. Together the mines turned out 839,000 ounces last year, of which 71% accrues to Gold Fields interest. The Tarkwa mine processes 42,000 tonnes per day grading 1.1 grams per tonne, with the gold recovered by heap leaching.
Gold Fields is presently constructing a processing plant to augment the heap leaching process and other upgrades at a capital cost of $250 million.
The forces that broke apart the crust created continental scale fractures, or "shear zones". Gold bearing fluids travelled through those openings, creating numerous gold deposits. One of those deposits -- Obuasi -- ranks among the largest in the world, a 50 million ounce giant that has been continuously mined for more than 100 years. Ashanti Goldfields` Obuasi ore body is located along 8 kilometers of the Ashanti Gold Belt and presently produces 537,000 ounces per year. AngloGold has bid $1 billion to get its hands on the remaining portion of that immense deposit and plans to invest a further billion dollars to expand gold production.
Overall, the Ashanti Gold Belt has 90 million ounces of past production and present reserves, putting it in the league of the legendary Carlin Trend of Nevada.
The geological processes that created the Ashanti Gold Belt were repeated in two major parallel gold belts and a couple of smaller areas. Newmont controls the Yamfo-Sefwi belt, 100 kilometers northwest, by virtue of its takeover of Normandy. Newmont plans to invest a half billion dollars for development of two mines in Ghana.
Moydow Mines (MOY-TSX) recently closed a deal by which the junior sold its 50% interest in a 1.2 million ounce deposit to Newmont. The $31 million price tag implies a value of $52 per ounce for that undeveloped deposit.
Virtually all of the land along those two main belts has been locked up as exploration activity in Ghana heats up.
Midway between the Ashanti and the Yamfo-Sefwi gold belts lies a lesser explored gold belt known as Asankrangwa.
An Overlooked Belt
Asankrangwa is broadly identical to the better known belts, in that it is centered on a regional scale shear zone with widespread gold values and some past production. The rock units are exactly the same as in the other belts.
PMI now holds the heart of that belt, which has received only a fraction of the exploration effort of the other belts. To understand how this tiny company locked up the heart of what must surely be one of the most attractive exploration targets in the country, it is necessary to understand the exploration history. A considerable amount of exploration was conducted in Ghana in the 1980`s and the first half of the 1990`s. The objective of much of that work, as in Nevada and many other regions, was to define surface mineable, heap leachable deposits.
Earlier exploration relied on the presence of local miners and on geochemical surveys. (That is, geologists take samples from the surface layer over a broad area on a grid pattern and then look for minute amounts of gold and other elements often associated with gold deposits.)
That approach was moderately successful, in spite of the fractured ownership, with many small companies exploring small areas in isolation. Results were just beginning to fit together when the collapse of the gold price in 1997 resulted in a sharp fall off in gold exploration.
Picking Up The Pieces
A private company, whose principals include a high-powered group of Ghanaian and Canadian geological and business talent, painstakingly assembled the properties covering fully 50 kilometers along the heart of the Asankrangwa belt. That group also assembled the data that was built from a decade of work. That data created an extra-ordinary starting point to explore the property, which is now being looked at for the first time in a comprehensive manner.
The prospects are excellent for finding additional gold deposits in Ghana, and the PMI property position represents an exceptional situation where a junior controls a district-cale project. While the geological potential of Ghana is well appreciated, the investment environment of the country is less well understood. My recent tour greatly enhanced my comfort level with respect to Ghana.
Ghana Is A Rapidly Emerging Democracy Ghana is making rapid progress toward development and modernization. Throughout the country, and especially in the capital of Accra, one can see new projects under development and other evidence of growing prosperity.
The country has a British heritage, with English as the official language of government and business and it uses the English legal and parliamentary systems. After independence in 1957, the country went through a tu- multuous period. The previous prime minister Jerry Rawlins lost the support of his people and as a result, he was trounced in the last election.
A real commitment to change and development has maintained popular support for John Kufuor, the current prime minister. The solid progress of his government has also built international confidence that Ghana is a stable country in which to invest.
The Ghanaians are a friendly and peaceful people. They are hard working, reliable and highly intelligent.
Education is a high priority, and even the tiniest and most remote villages have a school as a prominent part of the village. Ghanaians are primarily Christian, with a sincere dedication to their churches. The crime rate is generally low and the government is cracking down hard to root out corruption throughout the system.
Ghana Is Mining Friendly
Ghana`s mining industry generates 40% of the country`s foreign exchange earnings and the govern ment policies are aimed at enhancing this vital sector of the economy. Ghana is now in the process of updating its mining legislation to attract more capital to the country.
I met with the Minister of Mines, the chief executive of the Minerals Commission, the Director Planning and Policy Analysis of the Minerals Commission, the chief executive of the Ghana Chamber of Mines and several mining executives in Ghana. From those discussions, it is clear that the government is committed to continuing to attract foreign investment. The massive amount of money flowing into the country attests to the confidence that the country will continue to be a favorable place to do business.
A Rare Chance For A Junior To Take On A District-Scale Property
PMI is acquiring its interests in the Ghana projects by way of an option agreement with a private Ghana company called Goknet Mining Ltd. That company is owned by two Canadian geologists and two Ghanaians with a long history in the mining industry. (See the Management sidebar for more details.)
PMI can earn 85% of the interests held by Goknet in return for $3 million of work on the properties over three years and 3 million shares (which are subject to trading restrictions).
The two Canadians on the Goknet team have been actively exploring in Ghana for a decade and one of the Ghanaians has three decades of geological experience in the country including 2 decades as head of the na tion`s Geological Survey.
As gold exploration activity began to wind down in 1997, that group began to accumulate ground along what they believed was a highly prospective but under-explored area known as the Asankrangwa Belt. That belief in the potential of the belt was based on extensive hands-on experience together with a comprehensive over view of Ghana geology.
Goknet eventually assembled 12 contiguous properties that cover 438 square kilometers and span 50 kilometers of the prospective shear zone in the center of the Asankrangwa belt.
Enviable Property Position
With so much attention by the major companies focused on Ghana, it was an extraordinary feat for tiny PMI to secure a property position that covers 50 kilometers, nearly half, of a gold belt that has the potential to rival the two major gold belts in Ghana.
To put that property position into perspective, the famous Obuasi mine of Ashanti has a combined past production and current resources totalling 50 million ounces. That extraordinary endowment of gold is hosted in an 8 kilometer long portion of the Ashanti Gold Belt.
Those figures are not to imply that PMI has the potential for a multiple of the Ashanti ounces, because gold values are not distributed evenly along these trends. Rather, it implies that there is a realistic prospect of finding a substantial deposit or multiple deposits somewhere within the 50 kilometers controlled by PMI. Drill results already in hand suggest the company is on track for a big success on its extensive property.
Enormous Geological Potential
The Asankrangwa Belt, like the other belts, is focused on a regional shear zone. (See the sidebar for an explanation of this geological setting.)
The belt was largely passed over in years past by the major mining companies on the basis that it apparently lacked some of the geological features associated with gold deposits on the other belts. By the time those misperceptions were laid to rest, the ownership of the belt had become fractured, with small Canadian and Australian juniors conducting diverse exploration programs.
In spite of the scattered efforts, there was some success in the belt. For example, nearly a million ounces of gold was produced from the Obotan mine, located just 10 kilometers northeast and on trend with the Goknet properties.
The property now held by PMI has benefited from $9 million of previous exploration work which turned up highly encouraging results. Wide-spread "galamsey" (small scale miners) workings, many of which are still active along the trend and at least three small underground mining operations from decades ago add further evidence of the gold potential on the PMI property.
PMI supplemented the previous work with a regional geological and structural interpretation, further sampling and geophysics, followed by drilling. The results have been extremely positive.
Follow-up Drilling About To Get Underway
The PMI drilling is currently focused on the Fromenda B area. Three other companies drilled in that area, with the work based primarily on surface geochemical results. Those early results were encouraging, but didn`t tie together and the project was abandoned as the gold price fell and interest generally waned for gold exploration.
PMI carried out a geophysical survey earlier this year which suggested that the mineralized zone has a somewhat different orientation than was believed by the previous operator. Nine holes drilled by PMI earlier this year confirmed that revised interpretation.
The results include 23.6 meters of 5.0 g/t, 10.7 meters of 3.8 g/t and 12 meters of 3.3 g/t. The drilling at the Fromenda B area has now confirmed gold values along one component of the shear zone for a length of 475 meters and to a depth of 72 meters. That zone is wide open laterally and to depth. In addition, geochemical and geophysical evidence suggest the presence of a parallel zone.
Those results are highly encouraging, and in line with intercepts from other potentially economic deposits in this setting.
Geologists frequently calculate the grade times the width to quantify the intensity of gold mineralization in a situation like this. (For example, 23.6 meters grading 5.0 g/t would yield 118 gram-meters.)
Using that approach, there is a 100 meter long interval that exceeds 70 gram-meters, defined by three drill holes. A larger area carries between 25 and 70 gram-meters. A lot more drilling is required to demonstrate continuity in this zone, but the early results are beginning to look a lot like one of Newmont`s projects in Ghana slated for development.
A Major Company-Sized Target
Newmont has published that its Akyem deposit hosts 55 million tonnes grading 2.09 grams per tonne, containing 3.2 million ounces. Drilling spans 800 meters, to a depth of 100 meters. The company is now be ginning to drill below 100 meters, with early reports suggesting that the mineralization continues to depth, setting the stage for a significant expansion.
A little over half of the area of the long section of Akyem has a grade-thickness in excess of 25 gram-meters, with the balance carrying less than that amount. You can see that the longitudinal section of the Akyem deposit is similar in scope to Fromenda B.
I want to emphasize that PMI is a long ways from being able to quantify any sort of resource on its Ghana properties, including Fromenda. The purpose of this comparison is simply to demonstrate that the mineralized area at Fromenda has the scope to host a significant deposit, potentially large enough to be of interest to a major. A considerable amount of drilling is needed to make any sort of estimate.
Drilling Soon To Get Underway
PMI has recently raised C$2.5 million to fund further work on the properties, with the first target being the Fromenda B area. The company plans to step out from the known zones of favorable mineralization and effectively work through the prospective area as illustrated in the longitudinal section.
You can see from the illustration of Newmont`s Akyem deposit that the gold grades and thicknesses are not consistent. In fact, much of the area within the Akyem deposit is less than 25 gram-meters, and therefore likely below the cut-off. The remaining area with more favorable grades hosts more than 3 million ounces.
Drilling is set to get underway any day now on a drilling program expected to encompass 80 holes. That would be enough holes to define a resource (assuming the results are favorable!).
I expect the results at Fromenda will be like other deposits. That is, some holes will hit and others will come up with a lesser combination of grade and thickness. Once the drill program is completed, the results will be processed by an independent engineering firm.
A prospective zone at Fromenda B has been outlined by sampling, geophysics and reconnaissance drilling over a length of 1.5 kilometers. At this time, all one can say is that the setting is favorable and the holes al ready completed have given reason for optimism.
As the drilling progresses at Fromenda B, the company will be looking at some of the other targets along the 50 kilometer long trend of its property position.
Enough Projects For Several Companies
There are enough targets on the PMI property to keep several companies active. These targets are all based on prior work that turned up favorable geochemical, geophysical and/or sampling results. Over the next few weeks, four additional target zones will be tested by initial drill holes. Each of those tar gets is on or close to major structures that have been shown to carry significant gold values in the areas to be drilled.
PMI also intends to carry out further surface work on several of the better looking targets in order to prioritize them for more detailed follow up. For the past several years, the Goknet geological team has been compiling the data from the earlier work and looking at the data and projects in the field from a broader perspective. In essence, the team has developed a very high level of understanding with regard to shear hosted gold deposits in Ghana. With that level of expertise, the team is becoming very effective at identifying the geological subtleties that are associated with gold deposits.
The PMI geological team is looking downwards as well as along the surface. Remember, only the top 100 meters has ever been explored on this trend.
Deep Potential
One of the most striking sights on my tour of Ghana was a longitudinal section of the 50 million ounce Obuasi deposit. It is extremely important to emphasize that only a few million ounces in that deposit have a surface expression. The high-grade sub-surface zones have kept that mine going for 100 years. Most of those sub-surface zones have no surface expression.
The point is, the Asankrangwa belt is geologically identical to the Ashanti Belt. Yet, that belt has never been tested below about 100 meters, with all of the prior work based on evidence of gold at surface.
More work is required to start putting in holes to test for hidden targets, but preparations are underway. The group plans to pull together all the evidence basis for laying out drill targets.
The consolidation of the property position has made the deep potential a workable target for the first time. It is only with the broader perspective that is now possible that the geologists are able to gain the insights necessary to target holes beneath the surface.
The deep potential (that is, below 100 meters) has now emerged as a very real target that could turn out to be even more substantial than the near surfaces zone now being delineated.
Becoming Irresistible To A Major
PMI has a big gold deposit within its sights, and could potentially begin putting together a resource on the basis of drilling soon to get underway. That project alone has the potential to make PMI interesting to the majors. Remember, Fromenda B is only one of the numerous well-de-fined targets along the 50 kilometer long portion of the gold belt controlled by the company. Ghana has quickly emerged as one of the top gold mining countries in the world. Three of the majors are firmly established in the country, and all in the midst of big capital programs aimed at upping production. Other large and mid-sized companies are looking for ways to get in on Ghana`s gold riches.
Favorable results from the Fromenda B drilling, or the drilling on the other four target zones to be drilled later this year, or on any of the other targets likely to turn up on the vast property will quickly grab the attention of the majors.

Its Important To Act Quickly
PMI has not had the attention it deserves from investors, but that is about to change. PMI is trading at nearly the same price as when it acquired the Ghana property position, even though it has made tremendous progress on the ground. Most importantly, the first set of drill results confirmed the geological model. The drilling soon to get underway could very quickly begin to define a resource, and therefore result in a quick escalation of the value of the company. Four other targets that will soon be drilled could also add value in the next few weeks.
A gold deposit in the making plus a 50 kilometer long gold belt would be
exciting anywhere in the world. For PMI to have that situation literally in
the heart of one of the hottest gold development regions in the world makes
this a compelling story that will very quickly be gin to be appreciated by a
much wider audience of investors. I urge you to act quickly.
A First-Hand Account Of Ghana
I have known Arthur Fisher, president of PMI, for a couple of decades and know his successes well. When he told me about PMI, I took the time to listen carefully. I immediately liked the geological story, and when I heard the details firsthand from Douglas MacQuarrie, a geologist who has worked on the properties for years, I was further impressed. The one big question in my mind was Ghana.
A few months back, I reported that three top gold producers were com mitting billions of dollars to the country. And, I had read reports from political experts that ranked the country highly. Yet, I needed to get more comfortable with regard to Ghana before writing a comprehensive account of PMI.
When Arthur invited me to tour his projects in Ghana, I made it clear that I was equally interested in learning more about the country. I`ve been to several other places in Africa and was well aware that there are enormous differences from one country to another. A few days in Ghana made it clear why the country was rapidly emerging as one of the leading gold producing nations, with billions of dollars of investments committed to the country.
Douglas MacQuarrie and two other very distinguished gentlemen accompanied me for the next several days on an extraordinary tour of the country. Geo Kesse and Thomas Ennison are two of the principals of Goknet, the company that assembled the property positions and is now a partner with PMI.
The reputations and background of those gentlemen helped to open doors and get us into places that turned the trip into a unique learning experience and provided insights available to few others. A glance at the management sidebar will help you appreciate the significance of travelling with that group.

Our first stop was the Ghana headquarters of Gold Fields, located in the capital city of Accra. That major gold producer generates 25% of its production in Ghana. Richard Graham was an important part in building the Ghana operations of Gold Fields and readily agreed to share his experiences in Ghana. His comments are so significant that they are summarized in a separate article.
We drove from Accra, through Konongo and on to Obuasi. Ghana is much like the other more successful developing nations. It has modern cities with all of the facilities and conveniences of cities anywhere. It has a comprehensive road system, although a little maintenance would make travelling a lot more comfort- able. There`s a lot of traffic, but driving is still manageable. Ghana is much like Mexico in many ways, except that they speak English.
The people are extremely friendly and the crime rate is low. The people are generally well educated with even the smallest and most remote villages have a school. Christianity is by far the dominant religion with evidence everywhere of the passion with which the people embrace their religion.
As we toured Ashanti`s Obuasi mine, the reverence for Geo Kesse was evident, among even the most senior of the Ashanti geologists and managers. Management and geological staff were extremely forthright in providing a detailed geological description of the deposit.
After donning the usual boots, overalls, lights and safety gear, we piled into a pickup truck for what I thought would be a drive to the mine portal.
When we arrived at the portal we carried on, barely slowing down, to drive directly into an opening measuring five meters wide and five meters high. Still in the pickup, we followed that huge hole in the ground in a spiral to the 2,000 foot depth. Along the way, we had to occasionally go into pull-outs to let loaded ore trucks pass on the way to the surface.
At one of the working faces, we saw big modern scoop trams loading the underground ore trucks from massive stopes (the openings made by blasting the ore). In short, the Obuasi mine is much like any modern large-scale underground mining operation.
One of the most impressive sights on the trip was in the mine planning office. A longitudinal section of the 8 kilometer long ore zone stretched across two walls with the ore zone representing about a meter and a half vertically. It is not often that one sees a single mine plan that represents more than 50 million ounces of gold.
One of the interesting points was that the open pit zones which produced millions of ounces of gold represented only a few square inches in a couple of spots along the top of the section, almost insignificant in comparison with the vast underground ore zone.
Our next stop was the Obotan mine, located a half hour`s drive from the Ashanti operation. Obotan and a couple of satellite pits produced nearly a million ounces of gold from an open pit operation that recently closed. The former chief geologist for that operation is now part of the Goknet / PMI team, and accompanied us to his old stomping ground to act as a tour guide.
Seeing Obotan was extremely interesting, as it is located only 10 kilometers north of PMI`s properties on the Asankrangwa gold belt. It was very informative to see a real-life geological cross section in the walls of the pit.
Eric Dontoh, who had been with the Obotan project from the beginning, was absolutely adamant that the area now being drilled by PMI looks exactly like Obotan did in the early days of that project.
PMI has now tied together the various bits of road that were used by the previous operators to create a through road that passes the full length of its property. This is beautiful country, with low rolling hills, to perhaps a hundred meters, covered with a forest more like the Pacific Northwest of North America than the movie image of an African jungle.
The area is sparsely populated, with a scattering of farmers eking out an existence from small groves of ba nanas, plantains, pineapple, cocoa and the like.
Surprisingly, it is not hard to find bulldozers for road building and building drill pads in the area. Drill rigs are hard to come by, not because they`re scarce, but rather because there is an intense demand for them throughout the country.
The most significant part of the trip was the Fromenda B area, where PMI had just completed drilling. Access was clearly not an issue, as the road runs along the main trend and drill pads could be developed with a couple of hours of bulldozer work.
From the Grid B area, we walked the few hundred meters to the old Adeade mine, where an adit into a hillside and 3 shafts were used to extract high-grade ore several decades ago.
Galamsey miners were now working in the area using hand-dug shafts.
PMI has taken over the drill core logging and storage facility from one of the previous operators. An examination of the drill core showed up geology that looked exactly like that at the nearby Obotan mine. The top 100 meters or so is heavily weathered, and previous testing shows that it is amenable to leaching.
A few drill holes intersected the shear zone below the area of weathering, and exhibited geology exactly like other major shear- hosted gold deposits.
The next morning, we took part in a welcoming ceremony at the palace of the local Divisional Chief. Twenty four of the chiefs from the various villages in his area were there to greet us. It was a fascinating mix of west ern clothes and traditional tribal costumes, of drums fashioned from tree trunks and massive stereo speakers, like at a rock concert. Two dozen performers delivered traditional songs and music, with a master of ceremonies who sounded like he trained at a Club Med, but speaking the local language.
Geo Kesse is also a Chief, which helped to elevate the stature of our gathering. It is clear that Goknet has a very strong and cooperative relationship with the locals.
From the PMI property, it was only a short drive to Gold Field`s Tarkwa operation. Eric Dontoh was a senior geologist at Tarkwa before leaving to head up the geological effort at Obotan. His knowledge complemented the experienced Gold Fields geologist who guided us through the operation, providing a very interesting lesson in Precambrian geology.
The Tarkwa deposits are hosted in a 2.2 billion year-old conglomerate formation. The gold-bearing Birimian formation was shedding gravel into an extensive basin. Gold deposits formed along the ancient river channels and in the sedimentary fans formed where the rivers entered the basin. Those readers with some geo logical knowledge will immediately recognize that this is exactly the same situation that created the Witwaters-rand Basin of South Africa, by far the largest depository of gold in the world.
The geology at Tarkwa is very different than the shear-hosted geology along the three major gold belts, in- cluding the PMI project. Nevertheless, touring the mine and getting a hands-on lesson in the local geology was extremely valuable. Tarkwa vividly demonstrates the presence within Ghana of massive gold deposits, on the scale of the Witwatersrand Basin.
Tarkwa operates as a massive open pit operation, with the gold recovered by heap leaching. Gold Fields already have the foundations in place for the construction of a large milling operation that will treat the ore that is not amenable to heap leaching. That $250 million-dollar commitment will boost near-term production and extend the life of this operation well into the future.
We passed through the gorgeous beach resort of Cape Coast on the way back to Accra, but alas, after dark. All that we saw of the beach was the surf zone glimmering in the moonlight. On the next trip, I will be a little smarter and schedule a beach day.
A couple of days in Accra was dedicated to meetings with government and mining industry people. The Minister of Mines was a very intelligent and dedicated professional with a tremendous appreciation for the importance of the mining industry in the country.
The major mining companies are the most important consideration for the Minister, so I was pleased that I was able to chat with her for nearly an hour about the investment considerations relating to small mining companies. She impressed me with her astuteness by stating that the major companies represent the backbone of the industry, but "it is the small companies that create the excitement in the industry". That is, Madam Minister was keenly aware that it is the small companies that make the discoveries that provide the basis for the big investments by the majors.
There is no doubt that the government policies favor foreign investment, and the government is determined to do what is required to ensure that the mining industry remains comfortable investing in Ghana.
I also met the CEO and senior staff of the Minerals Commission, the government agency that handles the practical level of establishing policy and administering the mining industry.
Those meetings re-enforced the favorable attitude that I gleaned from the Minister.
I was expecting a counterpoint to the government line from a meeting with the head of the Chamber of Mines, a mining industry sponsored group. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised at the obvious harmony that existed between the government and the mining industry.
The billions of dollars being invested in the gold industry in Ghana vividly demonstrates that the mining industry is comfortable with the current situation in Ghana, and also with the long term. (It is hard to move a mine!)
The mine tours, geology lessons and meetings at the highest levels with government and industry people pro vided an incomparable opportunity that served to elevate my comfort level. I have no hesitation in saying that Ghana is an extremely attractive place to invest in gold mining.
PMI is very well positioned to benefit from the growing level of interest in the country, with a powerful management and geological team and an exceptional property position.
(Pictures from the trip will be posted on the Resource Opportunities website http://www.resourceopportunities.com in the next couple of days.)

$ in neue Mineprojekte in Ghana.

Name Change -- Warrant Extension -- Drill Update
PMI Gold Corporation (PMI) (TSX/V: PMV) (formerly PMI Ventures Ltd.) announces that effective May 23, 2006 the name of the Company was changed to "PMI GOLD CORPORATION", in order to better reflect its business. The common shares of the Company were called for trading on the TSX Venture Exchange in the new name but under the same symbol "PMV". Registered shareholders will shortly receive a letter of transmittal from Computershare Trust Company of Canada should they decide to exchange their present certificate(s) for certificate(s) in the new name.
In addition, PMI announces the extension by one year of the term of the 1,237,500 warrants issued on June 22, 2005, from June 22, 2006 to June 22, 2007 at the same exercise price of $0.35.
Drilling is currently in progress on the Ashanti II Gold Project in Ghana. Eight diamond drill holes totalling 1,575 metres, of a planned 5,000 metres program, have been completed, with logging, sampling and assaying underway. Three holes were completed on the Ofoase concession to test for down dip extensions to the gold mineralization noted in trenching. Five holes were completed on the Switchback North concession testing a 800 metres wide by 2,000 metres long gold in soil geochemical anomaly and outlined IP (induced polarization) anomalies.
The drill has now been moved to the Agyaka Manso concession, the southern most of the eight concessions which comprise the Ashanti II Gold Project, to test under galamsey workings in the Appiahkrom showing area where several hundred galamsey have been working a series of narrow quartz reefs carrying strong gold mineralization. Recent IP surveys have also outlined three new drill targets in the Donkokrom area six kilometres to the northeast of Appiahkrom - also in an area of extensive galamsey workings.
The drill will then be moved to the Old Kukunapi Mine area on the Gemap concession, where detail IP surveys on 100 metre line spacing have outlined eight significant targets. Previous drilling of northeast trending (D2) structures in this area has yielded near surface intersections to 16 g/t gold over 4 metres.
The current program will concentrate on drilling strong IP anomalies localized at the intersection of major eastwest trending (D4/D5) and the northeasterly D2 structures; at favourable lithological contacts between granitoids and metasediments; and where locally coincident with strong gold and multielement ICP soil geochemical anomalies.
The technical aspects of this work program are under the direction of Douglas R. MacQuarrie, P.Geo. (B.C).

PMI Gold Corporation - Mr. Peter Hooper appointed as Non Executive Chairman - Exploration Update
VANCOUVER, July 7 /CNW/ - PMI Gold Corporation (TSX/PMV) advises that Mr. Peter Hooper has been appointed as Non Executive Chairman of the Company. Mr. Pearce Bowman has stepped down from his role as Executive Chairman and CEO in order to take up a new role as CEO of Queensland Energy Resources Ltd., a private company with extensive oil shale leases in Queensland, Australia. Mr. Bowman remains as a Director of the Company.
Mr. Hooper, who is currently a Director, brings an extensive background at the Executive level and 30 plus years of experience in the International, African and Canadian gold mining and capital management sectors. The Company is also pleased to announce that Mr. Douglas R. MacQuarrie has been appointed as CEO. Both appointments were effective July 3rd , 2006.
Exploration Update
A total of 2,580 metres of diamond drilling in 13 holes, have been completed on the Ashanti II Gold Project in Ghana, with drilling scheduled to restart in mid July after a short break. The program is testing geophysical, geological and geochemical/old workings targets over a 50 km strike length of the Asankrangwa Gold Belt; and on the Ofoase concession located on the Ashanti Gold Belt.
As a result of deep surface weathering, generally flat topography and widespread alluvial, elluvial and laterite cover, the Company is 'blanketing' target areas with Induced Polarization (IP) surveys in areas with favourable deep seated structures that have indications of gold mineralization (previous mineralized drillholes; old galamsey workings; mineralized showings or soil anomalies). Major structures and sulphide concentrations within 100 to 200 metres of the surface will be detected by the IP surveys and subsequently drill tested for gold mineralization.
To date only 3 out of 17 target areas selected by SRK Consulting in their 2005 project review have been partially tested for gold mineralization. The Company plans to continue exploring the other target areas on a one by one basis.
Switchback North Concession
---------------------------
Five holes (1,564 metres) were completed. Three holes were located to 'fence' a drill section across the entire 800 metre width of the previously outlined gold in soil anomaly, and two to test distinct IP, rock and soil geochemical and geological targets. Wide intersections of strongly foliated carbonaceous "spotted phyllite" interbedded with siltstones, plus quartz veining, were noted. Coarse pyrite, locally from 2 to 5%, is associated with the spotted phyllites and is the likely source of the regional IP anomalies. This type of spotted phyllite unit is associated with gold mineralization on the Ashanti II concessions, and at the former Obotan and Adubiaso mines located 7 km to the east and northeast respectively.

The gold intersections in SBN003 are associated with sulphide mineralization in regionally continuous, northeast trending, west dipping shear zones with quartz veining - along strike and down dip of a series of old workings and shafts. Additional testing of these targets along strike is recommended.
Hole SBN004 was drilled to test a moderate IP and gold in soil geochemical anomaly. A sheared and mineralized quartz reef intermixed with graphitic phyllite and saprolite was intersected, from 4.0 metres to 37.5 metres down hole. Gold values within the quartz reef are associated with shearing, pyrite and arsenopyrite mineralization and carbonate alteration. As this is the first drill intersection on this reef no estimate of true width can be made. IP surveys and prospecting suggest a possible N10E strike to the zone. In order to better define the zone in preparation for additional drilling, a detail fill in soil geochemical survey is currently underway.
Ofoase Concession
-----------------
Three holes totalling 271 metres were drilled to test down dip from surface trenching where gold grades to 4.2 g/t in grab samples of Tarkwaiian conglomerate had been previously noted in trenching. Results were discouraging with the best intersection grading 1 metre (at) 0.12 g/t Au in quartzite breccia/conglomerate at a contact with sandstone. Only weak amounts of sulfides and tourmaline were noted. Elevated gold grades at surface appear related to supergene enrichment of the primary low grade gold intersected at depth. No further work is currently planned on this Banket Hill area target, however regional field work has commenced to follow up on other high gold in silt anomalies located elsewhere on the 84 sq km concession.
Agyaka Manso Concession
-----------------------
A total of 4 holes were drilled in two areas separated by some 5 km along a well defined shear zone which is 1.4 km west of and sub parallel to the main ASZ2 (Asankrangwa Shear Zone 2) structure. This area has been the subject of widespread galamsey workings.
Appiahkrom Area: Two holes totalling 261 metres were completed. The holes were drilled to test under active galamsey workings - where grab samples of narrow (less than 1 metre) banded quartz reefs in graphitic phyllite gave assays from 0.07 to 52 g/t Au. The dip extension of the zone and a possible sub-parallel zone was intersected with both holes - but assays and widths were generally disappointing, with best intersections grading: 8.4 g/t Au over 0.20 metres at a depth of 51.2 metres down hole; 2.18 g/t Au over 0.50 m at a depth of 76 metres; and 1.3 g/t Au over 0.9 metres at a depth of 81.4 metres.
Based on the drill results, a 'blanket' IP survey totalling 41 line km was completed over the area centered on the Appiahkrom workings to confirm its geophysical signature and locate stronger zones of mineralization. This survey has outlined several moderate IP anomalies associated with strong N30E and N80E trending structures in the vicinity of galamsey workings. In particular, the Agye Agye galamsey zone located 1.8 km to the east of Appiahkrom is coincident with a strong IP high anomaly and on the main ASZ2 shear. Further drilling is planned to test these new targets.
Donkokrom Area: Two holes totalling 333 metres were completed. These holes were spotted to test weak to moderate IP/resistivity targets under extensive alluvial galamsey workings. No significant structures or assays were returned. No further work is currently planned in this area.
Sample analyses were completed at SGS Analabs Pty. Ltd. at Bibiani, and analyzed for gold by fire assay-AA on a 50 gram sample charge. Selected samples were rerun with 24 hour bottle roll leach assays confirming the earlier values. Random blanks were also added to the sample stream. The work program was under the direction of Douglas R. MacQuarrie, P.Geo. (B.C).
On behalf of the Board,
"Douglas R. MacQuarrie"

over a 50 kilometre strike length of the Asankrangwa Gold Belt, and on our
Ofoase concession located on the Ashanti Gold Belt.
Switchback North Concession - New Gold Mineralized Reef System Located
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Two drill holes, totalling 220 metres, were completed near SBN004
(previously reported 2.79 g/t Au over 4.10 metres). SBN006 was drilled azimuth
090 degrees parallel to and 40 metres northwest of SBN004 to test for a down
dip extension of the mineralization. Minor gold values and narrow 'low angle'
quartz intersections were obtained, suggesting the target was east dipping
sub-parallel to the drill hole.
SBN007 was collared 100 metres east of SBN004 and drilled to the
northwest. This hole intersected 20 metres of intermixed limonitic, vuggy
quartz reef and saprolite from 54.5 metres to 74.5 metres down hole. The
10.1 metre interval from 58.9 to 69.0 metres (approximate true width) graded
1.47 g/t Au based on standard 50 gram fire assays with atomic absorption
finish. Bulk leach extractable gold assays on the greater than 0.50 g/t Au
rejects, were on average 26% higher, suggesting a coarse, nugget gold
component to the mineralization and a potential for a grade increase with
larger sample sizes.
To further define this target, detailed IP/Resistivity surveys were
completed on a 12.5 metre station and 50 metre line spacing. A 200 metre long
resistivity high was outlined, trending 020 degrees, co-incident with the gold
mineralized intercept in SBN007 and with a 2.63 g/t Au soil sample taken
100 metres to the northeast and a 11.20 g/t Au soil sample taken uphill,
110 metres to the southwest. A sub-parallel 250 metre long resistivity high
was also defined co-incident with the quartz reef intersected at the collar of
SBN004.
A series of trenches have been started to confirm the
drilling/geophysical interpretation. Trench SBN1, azimuth 135 degrees, was
started 40 metres east of the collar of SBN004, and has intersected a 12 metre
wide quartz reef at a depth of 2 metres and striking +/- 020 degrees. Visible
gold has been noted in initial grab samples of the reef, associated with
oxidized coarse sulfide mineralization. In addition, several other one to two
metre wide quartz reefs were also noted. Trench SBN2, located 30 metres to the
south of SBN004 has also intersected quartz reefs, with minor visible gold
noted.
The above data suggests that a series of gold mineralized, en echelon
quartz reefs cutting a favourable sulfide rich spotted phyllite unit and
controlled by a strong regional east-northeast trending deformation zone, may
account for the large +/- 2 kilometre long gold in soil anomaly. This target
is located 7 kilometres west of the former Obotan and Adubiaso Mines. The
Company is encouraged by the strength and width of the quartz reef system and
local assays of up to 9.94 g/t in drilling and 11.2 g/t Au in grab samples.
Additional trenches will continue to test the above zone, as well as numerous
other resistivity highs outlined by the IP survey. Sampling of the reefs in
trenches 1&2 has commenced.
Juabo Concession
------------------
Four drill holes totalling 947 metres were completed on the Juabo
concession, located just south of the centre of our Asankrangwa properties.
These wide spaced reconnaissance holes were spotted on interpreted
IP/structural/geochemical anomalies located from 600 metres to 2300 metres
west of the main regional SRK defined ASZ2 shear zone. Only minor gold values
were noted in a weak shear in JG009 located 600 metres west of the Old
Kukunapi mine workings. No further work is currently planned on these target
areas.
Sample analyses were completed at SGS Analabs Pty. Ltd. at Bibiani, and
analyzed for gold by fire assay-AA on a 50 gram sample charge. Selected
samples were also submitted for comparative BLEG assay at Transworld
Laboratories in Tarkwa. In addition, 120 sample pulps were analyzed for 36
elements including gold by Acme Analytical in Vancouver using ICP/mass
spectrometer. The comparative techniques generally confirmed the earlier FA
values. Random blanks were also added to the sample stream. The work program
was under the direction of Douglas R. MacQuarrie, P.Geo. (B.C).

[200/News Release] PMV V PMI GOLD CORP NOV 07 2006 08:12 AM Acquires Three
Past Gold Producers in Ghana --->@NEWS RELEASE PMI GOLD CORP ("PMV-V")
- Acquires Three Past Gold Producers in Ghana
Douglas MacQuarrie, President, announces the acquisition of the former
Obotan, Abore and Adubiaso Mines in Ghana, West Africa. These mines are
located on the new 89 sq km Abore and Abirem Prospecting Licence which have
been offered to and accepted by PMI Gold.
The mines were previously operated by Resolute Amansie Limited a
subsidiary of Resolute Mining of Australia. Between 1997 and 2002 the
Obotan mine produced a total of 730,000 ounces of gold from the Nkran pit
at an average grade of around 2.2 g/t. In addition, the Abore and
Adubiaso pits, located 12.5 km north and 4.0 km north northwest
respectively of Nkran, together produced a further 150,000 ounces at
similar grades. With this acquisition, PMI now holds 470 sq km, in 11
concessions over a 70 km length of the Asankrangwa Gold Belt.
The Lycopodium Group completed a bankable feasibility study on the
Obotan deposits in 1997 reporting 38 million tonnes at 1.96 g/t gold for
2.823 million ounces of contained gold. The plant operated at up to 2Mtpa
and incorporated a coarse and fine crusher feeding a SAG mill, gravity
concentrators, CIL circuit and a desorption plant. Mining commenced in
1997, and was shut down in December 2002 primarily because of the low $320
per ounce gold price. In 2003 the mill was sold and the decision taken to
rehabilitate the site and return the lease to the Government, which
occurred in July 2006.
PMI Gold believes there is an exploration target of one to two million
ounces of gold grading from 3.0 to 6.0 g/t below the Nkran pit based on
deep drilling results and projections to 400 m below the deepest
intersection. This assumption is conceptual in nature and there has not
been sufficient exploration to define a mineral resource and it is
uncertain if further exploration will result in the target being delineated
as a mineral resource.
The above assumption is based on the following:
1) Resolute had previously completed internal studies concerning
underground mining scenarios to co-exist with their surface mining, however
given the then very low gold prices the underground option was not pursued.
In their studies, a combination of longhole open stope, jumbo cut and fill,
airleg open stope, hand-held cut and fill, and shrinkage stoping methods
were envisaged with access via a decline from near the base of the pit.
These preliminary studies were based on 58 drill holes which intersected
+3.0 g/t Au mineralized material below the level of the pit. The pit is
currently water filled and measures some 830m long by 430m wide and is up
to 140m deep.
2) Two major near vertical gold bearing structures have been partially
outlined by the previous drilling - called the Western and Eastern high
grade lodes. Most of the deep diamond core drilling targeted these lodes
under the south end of the pit. Using a top assay cut of 30.0 g/t Au and
estimating true widths to be 55% of the mineralized intersection lengths,
30 drill intersections beneath the level of the pit exceed 22.5 gram Au per
tonne metres. These intersections have an average indicated true width of
4.4 metres and weighted average gold grade of 10.02 g/t Au. The deepest
down plunge intersection was 4.0 metres true width, grading 8.95 g/t Au,
and located 326 metres below the pit.
3) Other results of these studies indicate that:
- higher grades are contained within lower grade envelopes and
dilution wont be critical
- screen fire assay retests conducted on high grade intersections
indicate a significant coarse gold component to the high grade zones which
may not be reflected in the current assay database
- metallurgical test work on drill core composites from beneath the
pit indicated recoveries of +96.6% on leached concentrator tails with +75%
of the gold reporting to the gravity circuit; and that the assay database
may be significantly under calling the grades of the high grade lodes as
the metallurgical leach tests returned a 52% upgrade over the original
screened 50 gram gold fire assays
- modelling suggests that the majority of the high grade
mineralization is within structures which are vertical with good continuity
horizontally and vertically
- the Western zone, also referred to as the Galamsey Reef, has not
been closed off to the south or at depth
Given the indicated grades, widths and potential strike lengths noted
above, and the additional exploration potential at depth and elsewhere on
this new license, the Company is genuinely excited about this acquisition
and looks forward to commencing a full technical review and scoping study.
Additional funds will be required to advance this project to the
pre-feasibility stage and continue exploration of our other holdings. The
exercise of outstanding private placement warrants and options would
finance our short term requirements.

US $ an Auslandsinvestitionen angezogen.

Wenn also laut Machbarkeitsstudie 2,8 Mio.
US$ errechnen.

US $ in diesem Sektor angezogen.

Gruss, mxo

Halten Sie Ihre erworbenen Shares gut fest.

Verstehe nich was soetwas soll !

Was soll denn so ein Mist?!
