Shopaholic Gets Aus $2.5 Million From Union Capital March 27, 2000

      By Paul Waide
      Senior Analyst Australia News Archives

[Sydney, AUSTRALIA] Australian Internet investor Union Capital (UCL) has committed Aus $2.5 million funding to product search engine Shopaholic, which will go live in May 2000. The first payment will be $500,000 in April 2000 and the remaining payments will be spread over 12 months. For each $500,000 payment Union will earn a 6.5% interest up to the point where it owns a 32.5% stake in Shopaholic. Shopaholic CEO Justine Carter spoke with australia.internet.com

"We think Shopaholic will really encourage people to use the Net to shop," said Carter. "It`s really a viable option for people coming to shop online for the first time." Shopaholic differs from auction and e-tail aggregators live in the US because it is looking at both auction and e-tail sites, according to Carter.

Shopaholic`s product search engine will allow consumers to enter a product and the price they are willing to pay, hit search and compare results from up to 55 e-tail and auction sites. For consumers keen to spread their search further afield Shopaholic has developed the Mum Personal Tracker. Mum works in a similar manner to the Shopaholic search but searches the World Wide Web and then e-mails the Shopaholic customer with results.

At this stage of development Carter is the only employee available and nameable, details of the anonymous business development manager and technical officer are about 3-weeks away. Their identities not being because of current employment agreements. Prior to founding Shopaholic, Carter worked for Young & Rubicam and George Patterson Bates Interactive. In 1999 Justine left the advertising world to join Internet start-up Stuff Online Auctions as Marketing Director. In November 1999, Justine left Stuff for Shopaholic.

Carter said Shopaholic is an indeterminate distance away from IPO. "It depends on the market..but we should be turning a profit with 6-months," she said. Carter was not concerned about the market`s current disdain for e-tail stocks or the feeling that the "bubble is about to burst."

Shopaholic is happy with its current level of funding and is not seeking any further backing. "Union Capital were fantastic, they saw what we saw for Shopaholic," said Carter of her soon to be backers.

Stock in gold explorer come Internet investor, Union Capital, closed up 5.7% at 55 cents. Union now has a market capitalization of over $174 million.
