US May Be Forced To Attack If Iran Stays Defiant-Ex Envoy

NEW DELHI (AP)--The U.S. may be forced to attack Iran if Tehran remains defiant and insists on offering its nuclear technology to other countries, former U.S. ambassador to India Robert Blackwill has said.

America is trying to avoid military action against Iran, Blackwill said Wednesday at a seminar on U.S.-India relations. But Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's statement earlier this week promising nuclear assistance to other countries, including chaos-ridden Sudan, "left little hope for any peaceful alternative in the matter," Blackwill, who was speaking in his private capacity, said.

The comments were reported in a statement by the seminar's organizers. Blackwill, a former deputy national security adviser and presidential envoy to Iraq, was quoted as saying that a war with Iran is the last thing the world wants.

"It would be horrible to attack Iran, but it is showing no signs of compromise on the nuclear issue," despite efforts at reaching a diplomatic resolution of the situation, said Blackwill, who was ambassador to India between 2001 and 2003.

A U.S. attack on Iran would evoke an immediate response from Teheran, "lead to a volcanic reaction among the Islamic countries, a rise in oil prices and doubts whether this action would act as a deterrent against Iran's future nuclear program," he was quoted as saying.

Blackwill said the "adamant" stand taken by Iran and its continued refusal to comply with the U.N. Security Council's demands that it suspend uranium enrichment left Washington with "only two choices and both had dangerous connotations - either to acquiesce with this stand or go in for military action to destroy its nuclear facilities."

At the same time, if Iran was allowed to acquire nuclear weapons "it could encourage other countries to follow suit," Blackwill warned.

Although the U.S. has said it wants a diplomatic solution to resolving the ongoing standoff with Iran, U.S. President George W. Bush has said all options, including military force, are on the table.

Iran faces a Friday deadline to meet the Security Council's demand that it suspend enrichment of uranium, a process that can produce fuel for nuclear reactors or material for nuclear warheads.

France Wants UN Resolution On Iran To Allow Possible Force

PARIS (AP)--France wants any U.N. resolution on Iran's nuclear program to come under a provision allowing for sanctions or possibly military force, a top French diplomat said Thursday.

Iran faces a Friday deadline to meet U.N. demands that it halt uranium enrichment, or face Security Council action. The U.S. foresees that such action will include a resolution under Chapter 7 of the U.N. charter, meaning it could be eventually enforced with sanctions or force, depending on how it is worded.

France, too, wants any resolution to be under Chapter 7, a top diplomat said Thursday on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

Such a resolution wouldn't "automatically" mean resorting to military action, the diplomat said. "We are not yet at that stage," he said.

The U.S., France and Britain have warned that noncompliance could lead to sanctions, but Russia and other key members of the coalition seeking to talk Iran into dropping its enrichment program have opposed sanctions or force.

The diplomat reiterated France's hope to make the demand compulsory if Iran doesn't meet the April 28 deadline. The U.S. and Britain agree, despite opposition from Russia and China, the other two veto-wielding council members.
