Northland Resources Begins 10,000m Drill Program at The Hannukainen Copper-Gold Target, Finland

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(CCNMatthews - May 9, 2006) - Buck Morrow, President of Northland Resources Inc. ("Northland") (TSX VENTURE:NAU) is pleased to announce that drilling has started on a 10,000m diamond drill program at Northland's 100%-owned Hannukainen iron-copper-gold project in Finland. Previous work by Northland in 2005 identified a significant copper-gold target centered near the past-producing Hannukainen (Laurinoja) open pit mine which is reported to have produced 4.5 million tonnes at a grade of 43% Fe, 0.88% Cu, and 1 g/t Au.

The drill program, which is expected to continue for much of 2006, has the following objectives:

- Investigate the copper + gold potential along strike and down dip of the historic drilling at Hannukainen.

- Confirmation and expansion of the historic 66 million tonne iron-copper-gold resource and recalculation of the resource to NI 43-101 standards. (This resource estimate was prepared prior to the implementation of National Instrument 43-101 and does not use the resource categories stipulated in Section 1.3 of National Instrument 43-101, which are "inferred mineral resource", "indicated mineral resource" and "measured mineral resource". The Company believes that term "resources" is used differently from the use of that term in NI 43-101. The Company does not have - and is not aware of - any more recent resource estimates which conform to the standards laid out in NI 43-101 and the historical estimate should not be relied upon.)

- Evaluation of adjacent iron-oxide-copper-gold targets

The Hannukainen copper-gold targets were identified by re-logging and re-assaying of historic drill core stored at the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) core library. Hannukainen contains five known iron-copper-gold occurrences: Lauku, Laurinoja, Kuervaara, Vuopio and Kivivuopio, all located within a 3.5km trend. The primary target of the drill program is Laurinoja where previous logging and assaying has defined as a linear zone measuring approximately 1,000m by 200-400m. This zone is open to the northeast and southwest, and projects into areas untested by previous drilling located southwest of the historic pit.

Northland's 2005 re-assaying program returned numerous anomalous copper-gold intersections. Highlights include:

The Hannukainen area represents one of a number of known iron-oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) type magnetite occurrences in the Kolari District, Finland currently being re-evaluated by Northland. The deposits at Hannukainen in northwestern Finland are hosted by the Pajala Shear Zone. They belong to the IOCG class of mineral deposits. The Geologic Survey of Finland (GTK) reports that the Hannukainen deposits contain iron resources of 66 million tonnes of magnetite with anomalous copper and gold grades.

Reinterpretation of the historic drilling, (175 re-logged holes and 100 re-assayed old drill holes) and compilation of grade-thickness maps for the copper and gold values, has defined a 1,000m long, northeast trending linear copper-gold anomaly within the magnetite body through the pit area. The new data from the 2005 program provided Northland with an important new drill target in the shear-controlled Hannukainen IOCG district. The presence of high copper and gold grades at Hannukainen would significantly enhance the economics of the known magnetite iron deposits in the area.

Vance V. Thornsberry, P.Geol., Vice President of Exploration for Northland, is the Qualified Person as defined in NI 43-101, responsible for the design and execution of the Hannukainen re-assay program and has verified that the drill intersections contained in this release are an accurate summary of the assay data received by the company. Mr. Thornsberry has also verified that the historic information presented in this release has been accurately summarized from the reports quoted herein.
