China: Erdbebenüberwachung mit SUSE Linux
Die chinesische Behörde für Erdbebenüberwachung hat SUSE Enterprise Server als Plattform gewählt.

China Earthquake Administration (CEA) hat beschlossen, SUSE Enterprise Server für seismografische Überwachungen einzusetzen. Das Netzwerk besteht aus 41 Centern auf Landesebene und 360 Stationen für größere Städte. Ein Sprecher der CEA sagte, dass speziell die Qualitätssicherung und der Support Novell den Zuschlag erbracht habe. Auch die Stabilität des Betriebssystems sei ein Grund für SUSE gewesen.




Die Überwachung soll der effektiven Voraussage von Erdbeben dienen und die Sicherheit der chinesischen Bevölkerung verbessern. Roger Levy, Vice President von Novell und General Manager of Open Platforms, begrüßte den Schritt der Behörde. Es sei ein großes Projekt in China und Novell sei stolz darauf, einen entscheidenden Teil beitragen zu können. (jdo)

Der jüngste Frontalangriff von Oracle-Chef Larry Ellison auf Red Hat deutet auf ein tiefer gehendes Interesse. Auch Analysten scheinen ein Oracle-Linux herbeizusehnen. Kurz gesagt: Da braut sich was zusammen.

Laura DiDio von der Yankee Group ist davon überzeugt: Die Zeit ist reif für Oracle, um eine eigene Linux-Distribution herauszubringen. Entweder als selbst entwickelte Variante oder aber durch einen Zukauf. Letzteres scheint wahrscheinlicher.

"Wenn sie nicht irgendwo ein geheimes Forschungslabor und dort in den vergangenen zwei Jahren ein komplettes Linux-Stack entwickelt und getestet haben, müssen sie sich noch in diesem Jahr in diesen Markt einkaufen", sagte DiDio. Verpasse Oracle den Anschluss, werde Red Hat dem Konzern vor der Nase davonlaufen. Laut der Analystin beherrscht Red Hat 75 bis 80 Prozent des Marktes für kommerzielle Open-Source-Distributionen.

Da gleichzeitig auch 80 Prozent der Linux-Datenbanken unter Oracle laufen, wäre eine eigene Linux-Distribution für den US-Konzern eine ideale Lösung. Finanziell dürfte das kein Problem sein: Bei der Vorstellung der jüngsten Quartalszahlen in der vergangenen Woche präsentierte Oracle einen Gewinn von 1,3 Milliarden Dollar für das vierte Geschäftsquartal - der Umsatz stieg um 25 Prozent auf 4,8 Milliarden. Die verfügbaren Bar-Reserven summieren sich laut DiDio auf 7,7 Milliarden Dollar.

Die Analystin empfiehlt Oracle Novell als Kaufkandidaten. Beide Unternehmen würden bereits seit knapp 20 Jahren eng zusammenarbeiten, zudem habe Novell ein solides Management und sei technologisch in manchen Bereichen Red Hat überlegen. Als Alternativen zu einem Novell-Zukauf sieht DiDio außerdem Mandriva, Turbolinux oder Ubuntu.

Der Bau einer eigenen Distribution mache dagegen wenig Sinn. Schließlich könne sich Oracle durch einen Zukauf einen schnelle Zugang zu einer Open Source Community und zu einer installierten Basis verschaffen. Und das ganz ohne teure Investitionen in die Entwicklung.

Tatsächlich scheint Larry Ellison auf den Rat der Analystin zu hören. Zumindest teilweise. Allerdings scheint er statt Novell eher Red Hat im Visier zu haben. "Unsere Kunden sind nicht zufrieden mit dem Support dieses Unternehmens. Also bieten wir ihnen und anderen diese Unterstützung an", sagte Ellison und eröffnete mit diesen Worten ein Global Support Center für Red-Hat-Linux-Distributionen.

Der Schritt erfolgte allerdings ohne Wissen und Zustimmung von Red Hat selbst. Das legt die Vermutung nahe, dass es Oracle weniger um den Support-Aspekt geht, sonder darum eine eigene Linux-Distribution zu lancieren - auf der Basis von Red Hat. Dafür spricht auch eine andere Äußerung Ellisons, deren provokanter Unterton kaum zu überhören ist: Er sei davon überzeugt, dass Red Hat seine Linux-Distribution nicht als geistiges Eigentum schützen könne.

Oracle hatte bereits vor einiger Zeit angekündigt, eine eigene Linux-Distribution etablieren zu wollen. Damals wurde in der Gerüchteküche aber noch eine mögliche Novell-Übernahme hoch gehandelt.

Das mache aber aufgrund der Eigentümerverhältnisse bei Suse keinen Sinn, hieß es nun von Ellison. Denn: Aufgrund der Involvierung von IBM bei Suse-Linux könne "bei einer Übernahme eine sehr unkomfortable Situation" entstehen. Es scheint, als stünde Red Hat mit dem Rücken zur Wand.

Sieht man einmal von den Kooperations- und Übernahmeaspekten bei der aktuellen Situation rund um Linux ab, ist nach meiner Meinung Red Hat die eindeutig bessere Firma als Novell.
Novell hat zwar die sehr gute Firma Suse übernommen - die insbesondere in Deutschland und Europa einen guten Stand hat, aber in US weniger verankert war, schleppt jedoch seit Jahren ein Bündel schlecht laufendes "Kerngeschäft" mit sich rum. Und in jeder Bilanz, die sie nach der Suse - Übernahme veröffentlicht haben, zeigt sich, dass alle Linuxerfolge von dem schlechten Rest weggefreesen wurden. Deswegen der stete Kursrutsch - das hat wohl weniger was mit "Kursdrückerei" zu tun, sondern eher mit Frustration über ein unfähiges Mangement. Ich erinnere mich gelesen zu haben, dass von dem "original" Suse Team bereits nach wenigen Monaten niemand mehr an Bord war, alle sind entnervt gegangen. - Kann ich nicht weiter belegen, habe ich irgendwo gelesen. Aber die Bilanzzahlen waren schlecht, irgendwann habe ich den letzten Gewinn realisiert, dass war bei 6,20€. Seitdem ist es weiter runter gegangen: Schlechte Zahlen, schlechtes Managment!

Ich kann mir inzwischen vorstellen, dass die heilfroh sind , wenn Onkel Miccisoft vorbei kommt und sie aufkauft, weil sie selbst es nicht gebacken kriegen. Mir tut es dagegen aufrichtig um Suse leid, das ist eine prima Distribution, habe ich selbst auf einem Rechner.
Und das Microsoft jetzt beginnt mit Linux zu kooperieren ist eh nur ein Treppenwitz der Geschichte.

Wo Du es schreibst - die haben neulich einige rausgeschmissen? Das war so ungefähr auf einem der letzten Kurstiefs, oder? Ich hoffe aufrichtig, dass die Neuen es besser machen, insbesondere, was den Suse - Part betrifft.
Wie gesagt, ich hatte mich von dem Wert verabschiedet (einigermassen genervt) und dann nicht mehr intensiv verfolgt - aber der gesamte Sektor ist eindeutig wieder spannender geworden.

Microsoft einigt sich mit Erzrivalen Novell auf Linux-Pakt
San Francisco (dpa) - In einem überraschenden Strategiewechsel hat der weltweit größte Softwarekonzern Microsoft die Marktmacht des freien Computer-Betriebssystems Linux akzeptiert.

Microsoft-Chef Steve Ballmer kündigte in San Francisco eine umfassende Vereinbarung mit dem einstigen Erzrivalen Novell an. Novell ist einer der größten Anbieter von Linux. Im Rahmen der Partnerschaft solle eine Technologie entwickelt werden, mit der die konkurrierenden Computer-Betriebssysteme Linux und Windows gemeinsam auf einem Rechner betrieben werden können.

«Ich erkenne zweifellos an, dass Linux eine wichtige Rolle im Technologie-Mix unserer Kunden spielt», sagte Ballmer auf einer Pressekonferenz. Microsoft werde allerdings weiterhin das eigene Betriebssystem Windows im Vertrieb bevorzugen und die Integration von Linux nur dann vornehmen, wenn der Kunde darauf bestehe. «Wir bleiben Wettbewerber», sagte Ballmer.

Bislang war Microsoft Anbietern des freien Betriebssystems Linux konsequent entgegen getreten und hatte in der Öffentlichkeit das Linux-Prinzip der «Open Source Software» kritisiert. So hatte Ballmer im Juni 2001 von Linux als «Krebsgeschwür» gesprochen. Richard Sherlund, Analyst von Goldman Sachs, sagte nach der aktuellen Ankündigung von Ballmer: «Microsoft muss Linux nicht unbedingt lieben. Die Technikchefs (der Microsoft-Kunden) wollen aber, dass Windows sich gut mit Linux verträgt.»

Novell konkurriert als Hersteller von Computer-Betriebssystemen, Anwender-Software und Netzwerklösungen seit den 80er Jahren mit Microsoft. Im November 2003 übernahm Novell die Nürnberger SuSE Linux AG, einen weltweit führenden Linux-Spezialisten, zum Preis von 210 Millionen US-Dollar.

Im Jahr 2004 zahlte Microsoft 536 Millionen Dollar an Novell, um einen Kartellstreit beizulegen. Beide Firmen streiten außerdem um Vorwürfe von Novell, Microsoft habe in den neunziger Jahren die Vermarktung der Novell-Software «WordPerfect» mit illegalen Mitteln behindert. Die Novell-Aktie legte am Donnerstag um knapp 16 Prozent auf 6,79 Dollar zu. Die Papiere von Microsoft gaben dagegen leicht um 4 Cent auf 28,77 Dollar nach.

In den Linux-Markt war Ende Oktober auch Microsoft-Wettbewerber Oracle eingestiegen. Der zweitgrößte Softwarekonzern der Welt hatte angekündigt, auf der technischen Basis von Red Hat Linux eigene Linux-Dienstleistungen anzubieten.

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Novell Inc. (NOVL) issued a letter to the open-source Linux software community disputing what it believes are statements from Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) regarding the smaller software company's alleged violation of software patents.

"We disagree with the recent statements made by Microsoft on the topic of Linux and patents," Ron Hovsepian, chief executive of Novell, said in a letter posted on Novell's Web site Monday. "Importantly, our agreement with Microsoft is in no way an acknowledgment that Linux infringes upon any Microsoft intellectual property."

Hovsepian said that Novell did not agree or admit that Linux or any other Novell offering violates Microsoft patents.

But Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer made comments at a recent SQL summit meeting in Seattle suggesting that Linux does contain intellectual property from Microsoft.

A Microsoft representative said Tuesday via email that the company has "agreed to disagree" with Novell on whether certain open source offerings infringe Microsoft patents and whether certain Microsoft offerings infringe Novell patents. But the "agreement between our two companies puts in place a workable solution for customers for these issues, without requiring an agreement between our two companies on infringement."

Earlier this month, Microsoft and Novell reached an agreement for Microsoft to sell Suse Linux, Novell's version of the open-source operating system, to customers who wish to use both Microsoft Windows and Linux. The two companies will collaborate on designing and testing software, as well. Meanwhile, Microsoft agreed not to sue users or developers of Suse Linux for patent violations.

In total, Microsoft agreed to pay Novell about $348 million, whereas Novell will pay $40 million to Microsoft. Microsoft will pay Novell about $240 million for service coupons to its customers who wish to have Suse Linux with their Microsoft products.

There had been some concerns in the open-source community that Microsoft would sue other Linux vendors or developers not covered by the agreement with Novell, such as Red Hat Inc. (RHAT), with the largest market share at nearly 70%. Novell has about 30%. But as there has yet to be a major patent case involving open- source software, the general consensus was that Microsoft would probably not pursue this path.

David Kaefer, a patent attorney with Microsoft, told The Wall Street Journal earlier this month that Microsoft prefers to "license technology, not to litigate."

Linux was created about 15 years ago. Throughout that time, people worked on the open-source system to make improvements under a license stipulating that the software be available for free. But Linux now is believed to generate about $15 billion yearly, mostly from annual support and subscription fees.

"We think the open letter speaks for itself," said Novell spokesman Bruce Lowry in an email.

Mal abgesehen von dieser kleinen technischen Erholung halte ich Red Hat nach wie vor für den mittel- und langfristig aussichtsreicheren Linux - Wert. Dort geht es bei den News meist um die Bekanntgabe neuer Kunden - was Novell angeht liest man dagegen eher Geschichten wie diese:

Angry over Novell's (NOVL - Cramer's Take - Stockpickr - Rating) alliance with Microsoft (MSFT - Cramer's Take - Stockpickr - Rating), powerful members of the open-source movement are threatening to punish the struggling software provider.

Should the threats become reality, a restrictive covenant in a new version of the General Public License, which covers distribution of the Linux, could make it difficult for Novell to distribute the free operating system and related software.

In the worst case, Novell would have to spend as much as $200 million a year to write and market its own software instead of relying on the thousands of programmers who currently contribute code to Novell and other companies at no charge, says Trip Chowdhry, managing director of Global Equities Research.

A crippled Novell, which is already struggling to gain traction with Linux, would fall even further behind Red Hat (RHT - Cramer's Take - Stockpickr), its major rival.

A new version of the general license, or GPL 3, due in March, will likely stop Novell from distributing 95% of any new Linux-related code developed after it takes effect, and that, says Chowdhry, "will pretty much wipe out any gains that Novell may have gotten from upfront payments from Microsoft."

In November, Microsoft and Novell entered into a partnership aimed at strengthening the smaller company's position in Linux while making Windows and the popular open-source operating system work together. Microsoft also agreed to lend its considerable marketing muscle to the marketing of Novell's Suse Linux.

If the agreement had gone no further, there would be no controversy. But Microsoft also agreed not to sue Novell customers over alleged patent violations. Because Linux is developed by so many people at so many firms, violations of intellectual property rights are fairly common and can easily lead to litigation. And since Microsoft is a formidable opponent, the threat of a lawsuit by the software giant can scare away potential customers.

The problem for some members of the Free Software Foundation, which is revising the GPL, is this: Microsoft has singled out Novell and its customers for patent protection. Other developers could still be sued, and that is seen as unfair and a violation of the spirit, if not the letter, of the existing GPL, says Bernard Golden, CEO of Navica, a systems integrator and publisher of an open-source-oriented newsletter.

If a restrictive provision of the GPL goes into effect, Novell will still be able to distribute its existing software, but it will, in theory, lose access to code written after it takes force.

More likely, says Golden, is a tactical retreat by Novell that would entail modifying its agreement with Microsoft.

Golden says the underlying cause of the conflict is an ongoing cultural divide within the open-source movement, between "pragmatists" who are pushing hard to make their software profitable and "ideologues" who believe software must be free.

It is also unclear, he says, how widely the new GPL will be adopted.

For its part, Novell is keeping quiet about the controversy, saying only that "we won't comment until something has changed."

Shares of Novell were recently up 4 cents to $7.09.

Finally, business consulting produced 2.7% of revenues. It provides IT consulting, training, testing, certification programs and technical support. NOVL has key partnerships with other software providers including IBM (nyse: IBM - news - people ), Microsoft (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people ), Oracle (nasdaq: ORCL - news - people ), Hewlett-Packard (nyse: HPQ - news - people ) and SAP (nyse: SAP - news - people ). These partnerships help ensure software interoperability and lead to joint marketing and sales initiatives.

Increased competition and weaker than expected acceptance of new software offerings contributed to weak operating results for much of the past decade. To help drive growth, NOVL dedicated its focus on broadening and accelerating worldwide adoption of Linux. It also implemented a design approach to enterprise infrastructure solutions, which consisted of creating open standards-based discrete software products that are easy to implement without dependence on proprietary software.

Recent results indicate that this approach is beginning to bear fruit. Fiscal Q3 net revenues rose 3% year-over-year to $243.1 million. Thanks to a 77% surge in Linux platform products, open platform solutions revenues jumped 47.2% to $22.1 million. This offset slight declines in the company's larger segments. The adjusted operating profit margin more than doubled year-over-year to 5.13%. Because year-ago results were boosted by a tax benefit, adjusted net income fell 32.4% to $16.13 million, or five cents per share, but was still ahead of expectations.

A significant investment risk includes competition from larger rivals who can offer a more extensive portfolio of IT solutions. However, we believe NOVL's dedication to Linux will continue to drive growth in the near-term term. Deferred revenues are up $343 million from a year ago and $34 million sequentially to $734 million. The adjusted operating profit margin is already within the 5% to 7% target exit for fiscal 2007.

Partnership activity remains strong and includes a recent collaboration with IBM to support that company's WebSphere Application Server Community Edition as part of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server.

Finally, the U.S. District Court in Utah recently upheld NOVL's ownership of Unix copyrights. This could lead to more business for the company by allaying concerns of those who may have been hesitant to switch to Linux (which is based on Unix) out of fear of having to pay potential royalties to the plaintiff.

The quantitative model employed by the Forbes Growth Investor identified the stock right before its recent earnings-related pop. It continues to rank NOVL favorably, suggesting there is much upside left over the near-term.

Novell management issues the following financial guidance:

* Net revenue is expected to be between $925 million and $955 million, in line with prior guidance.
* On a non-GAAP basis, adjusted income from operations is expected to exceed previously stated guidance of between break-even and $10 million.
* Novell reiterates fiscal 2007 non-GAAP exit rate operating margin, as defined below, of between 5 and 7 percent.

Non-GAAP exit rate operating margin is defined as an annualized run rate expense level at the end of the period that, when compared to the full fiscal year's revenue, would result in pro forma operating margin for the year.
