Gruss

Industry Return Estimates for May 2006
While it is early to make concrete analysis, hedge fund and fund of hedge fund return estimates are proving to be very wide-ranging on both sides of the spectrum.
With 7.3% of AAC's 2,182 funds of hedge funds thus far reporting return estimates for May and 5.1% of hedge funds reporting, the trend is clearly for varied returns with a slight tendency towards the negative side.
54% of the funds of funds reporting May estimates to AAC's proprietary Fund of Hedge Fund Database are expecting a loss for the month, while 46% are estimating a positive return. The average of the estimates received is for a loss of .57%.*
Single-manager hedge fund returns are expecting a much more volatile May than the diversified funds of funds. Though the largest estimated fund of fund loss for May is over 8%, only 4 percent of the funds have thus far estimated a loss over five points.
However on the single-manager side, over 12 percent of the funds are estimating losses greater than 6% and half of those are expecting losses around 10% or more.
While the estimated losses in some cases are extreme for May, the greatest losses seem to be affecting the most volatile funds, most of whom had performed very strongly in the first four bullish months of the year and are therefore merely facing some profit trimming.
For example, the worst-performing Fund of Fund according to May estimates - a 3X-leveraged, European-based long/short equity fund - will be far from negative territory for the year should the May estimate be correct. Instead, it will merely see its year-to-date return drop from an unearthly 36.11% to a still-impressive 24.84%.
*We should note here that many of the worst-performing funds may be late to report performance numbers to AAC's and other industry databases or may cease reporting, therefore possibly skewing industry performance averages slightly towards the positive side.

Dein Vergleich hinkt.
