      Nicaraguan hope for Condor

      09/03/2007

Central American gold explorer Condor Resources believes Nicaragua’s Columbus gold and copper prospect could prove a major project.

Nigel Ferguson, Condor’s Australian chief executive, has set himself the target of increasing the AIM-listed company’s resources from today’s 467,000 ounces of gold and 18.4 million ounces of silver to more than two million ounces of gold and 50 million ounces of silver within two years. He argues that Columbus, a 4km gold, copper and molybdenum porphyry system in north-east Nicaragua, could make a big contribution to achieving this.

With £3.2 million in cash, Condor, which paid £250,000 for the Columbus concession, plans to spend another £500,000 shortly investigating it and should be able to say within three months whether it lives up to expectations, said Ferguson. The company has several other promising projects in Nicaragua, ruled by Daniel Ortega, the ex-Sandinista who is now claimed to be the miner’s friend, and neighbouring El Salvador.

At a depressed 6.5p, Condor’s shares undoubtedly carry risk. But, if Columbus and other prospects turn up trumps, they might repay a long-term speculation.

Condor Resources Has A Possible Company Maker In Nicaragua

      By Jack Hammer

“Condor was the last one out the door”, says Nigel Ferguson, chief executive of Condor Resources. He’s referring to the peak in the market for pure play exploration companies back in May 2006. Since then, after several major investors new to the sector overpaid and got burnt, the focus in London has been increasingly on development potential and production. Nowadays the speculative money is ever so slightly less speculative, and, unlike in Australia, where they still get a hearing, pure exploration companies seeking a London listing are now a rare sight in the City.

As an indication of the mood, Condor’s shares have halved in value since June 2006, when it last raised money. But although London may be jumpy, the share price isn’t really the point. What matters is whether the company can keep the coffers full enough to keep the drills turning. On that score, Mr Ferguson appears unperturbed. Backers like Ian Henderson at JPMorganFleming have deep pockets, and Condor’s brokers Mirabaud are some of the more capable fundraisers in town. At the moment there’s £3.2million in the bank, so the short-term future, at least, is secure.

So, having listed in the nick of time ahead of the correction, Condor’s a step ahead of any Johnny-come- latelys in the sector. And since Condor never talked up its production potential, investors – at least according to Mr Ferguson – are perfectly prepared to bide their time. His twenty year background in the industry, which includes having assessed the Geita Gold project for purchase by Ashanti, also helps allay any fears.

And as far as exploring goes, Condor’s certainly not shy about having a look around. It’s already turned over several properties in Nicaragua since it listed, and has now, for the time being, moved the focus to El Salvador. With all that cash in the bank, the only thing that’s been holding up progress there has been a lack of available kit and it looks as though delays in sourcing drill rigs have finally put the nail in the coffin of Mr Ferguson’s plans to prove up 1million ounces by May this year. The current total of 467,000 isn’t even close. But rigs are at last on site at Condor’s El Pescadito gold exploration project, 95km east of San Salvador, and a 3,000 metre drill programme is underway.

The plan is to test a 3,000metres strike to relatively shallow depths, with the aim of adding more inferred ounces to El Pescadito’s current 238,000 ounces of gold and 15m ounces of silver. What’s more the contractor, local boys R & R Drilling of Honduras, have agreed that on completion of the 3,000 metre programme, the contract will roll over into another 12,000 metre programme. At the end of all that El Pescadito could look very different indeed. “I’m confident we can get a couple of million ounces out of there”, says Mr Ferguson, and company literature now talks of 1-2million ounces by 2008.

In the meantime the company has also been busy on its earlier stage La Calera project, 45kms north east of San Salvador, where results from nearly 1,500metres of trenching, issued in the third week of March, showed grades as high as 9.6 g/t gold over 8 metres. La Calera already boasts a JORC inferred resource of just over 112,000 ounces of gold and 97,000 ounces of silver, and the most recent programme was designed to test for strike extensions. It seems to have found them, with La Calera now described as a “highly gold anomalous area” containing several parallel quartz veins and wide stockwork zones. An extensive drill programme is now planned.

And Nicaragua hasn’t wholly been forgotten. A 4km by 500 metres potential porphyry copper deposit called Columbus, which Mr Ferguson likens to some of the big Peruvian properties, shows real potential. It is currently worked by artisans, but Condor plans to spend US$1million on it over three years, although “to be perfectly honest”, says Mr Ferguson, US$500,000 will tell us”. Details can be found on Condor’s website, in a document with the delightful title of: “DRAFT: Not for release until cleared by CEO”. Perhaps that excessive caution is because Mr Ferguson says, “Columbus is what I’m pegging as our company maker”. Time will tell.
