Canada in 'active discussions' with EV supply chain companies - minister
OTTAWA, May 4 (Reuters) - Canada is talking to a number of companies interested in setting up production in the electric vehicle (EV) supply chain, the industry minister said, as the government seeks to cut carbon emissions to net zero by 2050 and play a role in the shift toward greener cars.

There are "very active discussions with a number of players" to develop an EV supply chain, Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne said in an interview last week.

Champagne did not name the companies, only saying he spoke to representatives of Volkswagen VOWG_p.DE last week, and has recently talked to executives from companies in the United States, Japan and Korea.

Canada is urging critical minerals producers and processors to scale up production. It has invested in EV projects through a multi-billion dollar fund set up in 2020, and last month pledged C$3.8 billion ($3 billion) over eight years to help boost the production and processing of critical minerals used for EVs.

Canada and the United States want all sales of passenger vehicles to be zero emissions by 2035.

      ....

The government has met with industry players to establish a strategy it hopes will make Canadian minerals, like lithium, cobalt and nickel, key to EV production in North America, according to chief executives in the sector and the minister.

The plan will be completed this year, government sources said without providing details.

      ...

But BHP Group Ltd BHP.AX , the world's largest listed miner that moved its copper and nickel exploration offices to Toronto last year, needs help to meet emissions targets in order to deliver critical minerals.

"When I look at Canada, I think net zero by 2050 is fantastic, but I've got a bigger challenge," Rag Udd, BHP's president of Minerals Americas, said on Monday in Toronto. "How do we get those (low-emission) power sources? How do we work with the provinces to actually induce that?"

William Adams, head of battery materials research at British commodities price reporting group Fastmarkets, has been warning of mineral shortages if production is not scaled up.

"Canada is blessed... It's got nickel, it's got cobalt, and it's got lithium," Adams said. "But like everywhere else, it needs a lot more investment in all these projects." ($1 = 1.2878 Canadian dollars)

Also zum 24.2.?

Also logisch betrachtet, müsste das so stimmen.

Global miners rank ESG as their top concern. Really?: Russell

LAUNCESTON, Australia, April 27 (Reuters) - Environment, social and governance (ESG) issues are the top concern of global miners, knocking out commodity price risk for the first time, according to a new survey.

KPMG said it was a "significant milestone" as ESG for the first time topped the list of industry risks in its 12-year-old Global Mining Outlook.

While commodity price risk dropped to second place, another issue closely related to ESG, namely community relations and social licence to operate, came in third spot.

      ...

The survey, released on Tuesday, shows that 72% of mining executives agree or strongly agree that "ESG will be a cause of major disruption in the industry over the coming three years."

If mining executives really believe this, it seems somewhat strange that they have to yet to re-organise and re-orientate their management structures and efforts to reflect that view.

Not one of the biggest listed Western mining companies has an executive with a title of chief ESG officer, and only one has a person with a somewhat similar title.

While some of the companies do have executives tasked with ESG, they also tend to have several other responsibilities, which raises the question of how much of their time and effort goes into ESG.

For example, BHP Group (BHP.AX), the world's biggest mining company, has Caroline Cox listed on its website as chief legal, governance and external affairs officer, a position she assumed in November 2020.

It's interesting that her legal role takes precedence in the title, and it's also worth noting that Cox has what at best could be described as a very low profile on social media.

An internet search of her name reveals only a small number of articles, mostly about her appointment and certainly very little on her role in preparing BHP to meet the challenge of ESG.

Industrial metals slump on China lockdowns, Fed rate-hike bets
Industrial metal prices dropped on Monday, with copper touching a more than one-month low, as prospects of bigger U.S. interest rate hikes and continued lockdowns in top consumer China fuelled worries over a global economic slowdown.

Benchmark three-month copper (CMCU3) on the London Metal Exchange (LME) dipped 1.5% at $9,961 a tonne, as of 0718 GMT, its lowest since March 16, while tin (CMSN3) dropped 4% to $40,460, after falling to its lowest since March 9 earlier.

The most-active May copper contract on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SCFcv1) ended daytime trading down 1.7% at 73,660 yuan ($11,239.11).

      LME aluminium (CMAL3) fell 2.1% to $3,178.50 a tonne, zinc (CMZN3) lost 2.6% to $4,320, nickel (CMNI3) eased 0.3% to $33,085, lead (CMPB3) slipped 1.3% to $2,358.

"Copper is a bellwether for economic conditions and in addition to the Fed raising rates expected to slow the U.S. economy, traders are also likely reading more yuan weakness, which will lead to higher import costs," said Stephen Innes, managing partner at SPI Asset Management.

"Also, no signs of more Chinese stimulus yet means less economic recovery. So, those are two gusty headwinds, hence commodities are rolling over." > https://www.tradingview.com/news/reuters.com,2022:newsml_L2N…

BHP reports weaker-than-expected iron ore production on COVID curbs
April 21 (Reuters) - BHP Group (BHP.AX) on Thursday fell short of estimates for iron ore production for the March quarter, as a pandemic-related labour crunch weighed on the miner's efforts to boost production in the mineral-rich Pilbara region of Western Australia.

The world's largest listed miner warned June-quarter production of the steel-making commodity is also expected to be impacted by lingering worker absenteeism, but said it remained on track to meet fiscal 2022 costs and volume forecast.

Copper production at BHP's massive Escondida copper mine in Chile declined 9% to 226.4 thousand tonnes (kt) in the third quarter, primarily due to a reduced workforce from COVID-19 quarantine regulations and public road blockades that affected access to the site for both workers and supplies.

Fiscal 2022 production guidance for the metal was cut to between 1,000 kt and 1,030 kt, from 1,020 and 1,080 kt.

Iron ore production from Western Australia came in at 66.7 million tonnes (Mt) for the period, flat from a year earlier but lower than a consensus estimate of 70 mt compiled by Visible Alpha.

Not until early March did Western Australia lift hard-line border restrictions put in place to curb the spread of the pandemic. The measures have left miners struggling to hire mine workers and train drivers even as pent-up demand fuelled a rally in commodity prices.

Rival Rio Tinto (RIO.L), (RIO.AX) on Wednesday reported lower-than-expected iron ore shipments for the three months to March end and warned of risks from sustained high inflation, a resurgence of COVID-19 lockdowns in China and a prolonged Russia-Ukraine war. read more

BHP Chief Executive Mike Henry also said market volatility and inflationary pressures have increased further due to the Ukraine crisis.

While conditions are expected to improve during the course of the 2023 calendar year, we anticipate the skills shortages and overall labour market tightness in Australia and Chile to continue in the period ahead, he said.

Tonnen, was einen geringeren Produktions
