Grund sehr gute Halbjahreszahlen.

JOHANNESBURG (MarketWatch) -- MTN Group Ltd. (MTN.JO), the largest mobile phone operator in sub-Saharan Africa, Wednesday posted a 16% rise in net profit, reflecting strong subscriber growth and the acquisition of Investcom LLC.
The Johannesburg-based company said net profit attributable to shareholders was 5.56 billion rand ($763.1 million) for the half-year against ZAR4.8 billion in the first six months of 2006.
Revenue for the period was 69% higher at ZAR34.21 billion, with the acquisition of Investcom accounting for 35% of this growth. MTN said its Nigerian and South African operations also were significant contributors to the rise in revenue.
Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization increased by 75% on the year to ZAR15.2 billion for the six months, with 20% of this is a result of the addition of Investcom. Excluding results from Investcom, organic EBITDA growth was 40% to ZAR12.1 billion, the company said.
MTN, which concluded the buy of emerging market operator Investcom for more than $5.5 billion in July 2006, said its subscriber base grew 20% since the end of December to 48.2 million subscribers by the end of June.

"b]MTN Rwanda mobile phone subscribers double[/b]
      Wed 19 Sep 2007, 10:11 GMT

      By Arthur Asiimwe

KIGALI (Reuters) - MTN Rwanda's mobile phone subscribers doubled to half a million over the last year as the company rolls out network access across the small central African country, its chief operations officer said on Wednesday.

The firm said the boom was also due to the scrapping of some charges and the reduction of call tariffs that attracted more customers.

MTN Rwanda is part of South African-listed MTN, sub-Saharan Africa's biggest cellphone operator.

"In September 2006 we were celebrating a quarter of a million subscribers and in just one year we have reached 500,000," COO Andrew Rugege told Reuters in an interview.

"This means that in one year, we have achieved what was achieved in (the previous) eight years."

A move by Rwanda's government to abolish import tariffs on mobile handsets at the start of this year also helped the steep rise in subscriber numbers by significantly reducing the cost of telephones in the local market.

Since setting up nine years ago, MTN Rwanda has been the only mobile network in the country of 9.4 million people.

It aims to roll out 60 new base stations and attract a total of 600,000 subscribers before the end of 2007, Rugege said.

Cellular services have become an indispensable communications tool in the nation, which is emerging from the 1994 genocide in which about 800,000 people were killed.

"MTN to launch new services in Cyprus, aims for 20% market share

      26/09/2007

Private mobile phone operator MTN launched a new corporate image Wednesday, taking over the three-year-old business of Areeba and announcing that it plans to expand into new fields of communications services.

MTN Cyprus CEO Bassel Jamaleddine told reporters at a press launch of the “Y’ello” branding campaign that “our role in Cyprus is telecoms in general.”

He said that with new services such as IPTV looming around the corner, MTN is also talking to other alternative service providers in Cyprus.

“We used the first three years to concentrate only on mobile telephony. Now we are looking at other services as well,” Jamaleddine said in response to questions about involvement in Internet services, WiMax and fixed telephony.

“Either we start new services from scratch or we partner with an existing provider. We are discussing different solutions with alternative providers,” he said.

MTN is expected to introduce upgrades to existing products in early October including the Pay Monthly, Pay-as-you-talk and business services.

“We have increased our geographical coverage by more than 25% and we are developing a new loyalty programme that will be offered to every subscriber,” Jamaleddine added.

He said that MTN’s market share stood at about 16% and hoped to close the year at 16.5%. However, the target is for an ambitious increase to 20% in 2008, representing an increase from the current 125,000 subscribers to about 190,000-200,000 by the end of next year.

“It was never a risk to invest in a market like Cyprus where economic growth is tremendous. The environment was too monopolistic in the beginning and we had a lot of hopes because of EU accession and anticipation of liberalization,” Jamaleddine said, adding that “things will be easier in the future.”

He said that the regulatory framework still needed some work.

“The last European Commission report [on telecoms] said that the government had much to do to improve and the situation in 2007 is no different. Now, there is a Commission team that is compiling the next report to be issued in February 2008, where we hope certain issues will be highlighted.”

MTN’s main concern is the problem it continues to face on the issue of new antennas and the absence of full and fair competition, Jamaleddine said.

Looking at international operations MTN Cyprus, and Areeba before that, has built up a network of roaming agreements with 228 operators worldwide and in the case of Europe it boasts full 2G coverage.

“By the end of September we expect to have 100% GPRS coverage thanks to our international gateway in Monaco, which is also being utilized by other MTN Group companies.”

Jamaleddine did not hide his delight at the fact that the Johannesbourg-based MTN Group became a global sponsor of the 2010 FIFA World Cup to be held in South Africa, which opens up “a tremendous potential” for MTN’s MobileTV service in Cyprus. At present the menu includes CNN and local content from Antenna and Sigma, but more is expected to be added, while the company clinched a sponsorship deal with local football champs Apoel.

Nozipho January Bardill, speaking on behalf of MTN Group President and CEO Phutuma Nhleko, said that social corporate responsibility is also a significant aspect of MTN operations in all 21 countries of presence.

“We invest and provide community services in the fields of education, health, culture and sports and 1% of our profits after tax is injected into the local funds that support the various programmes,” she said.

As regards the expansion of the MTN network, Bardill said that MTN’s philosophy has been to invest in emerging markets, “which is why Nigeria is our biggest market. We also look for other opportunities.”

The Cyprus operations, part of the Middle East and North Africa cluster, contributed some CYP 16 mln (EUR 27.3 mln) to Group earnings in 2006, while MTN as a whole reported a staggering first half revenue of CYP 2.11 bln (EUR 3.6 bln) this year with 48 mln subscribers. The MENA cluster includes Syria, Iran, Afghanistan, Sudan and Yemen.

Areeba entered the Cypriot market in July 2004 six months after winning an eleven-round auction at CYP 12.75 mln (EUR 21,36 mln) to become the second mobile phone operator on the island, following the state monopoly Cytamobile-Vodafone. It was the first to introduce the 3G network on the island and currently operates an integrated 3G/2.5G network. With a market share of 16% it is on target to reach the 25% minimum penetration rate as set by the licensing authority.

Areeba was a wholly owned subsidiary of Investcom LLC Luxemburg of Lebanese interests, which in May 2006 was taken over by the South Africa-based MTN Group for USD 5.526 bln, expanding the MTN network from 11 countries to 21.

The MTN Group was established in 1994 and is currently listed on the JSE Securities Exchange. "

Gleiches Thema von der gleichen (zypriotischen ?) I_net Seite financialmirror.com mit der schönen Überschrift:

"Areeba changes name to MTN in Cyprus

      26/09/2007

      -- Y’ello claims 16% market share

Just as people started getting used to the Areeba brand, the private mobile phone operator is changing its name to MTN to bring it in line with the products and services widely used by the parent company in 21 countries in Africa and the Middle East.

Apart from the name change, subscribers are already being greeted by the new corporate philosophy promoted through the new campaign, “Y’ello”.

Areeba entered the Cypriot market in July 2004 six months after winning an eleven-round auction bid at CYP 12.75 mln (EUR 21,36 mln) to become the second mobile phone operator on the island, following the state monopoly Cytamobile-Vodafone. It was the first to introduce the 3G network on the island and currently operates a an integrated 3G/2.5G network. With a reported market share of 16% it seems to be on target to reach the 25% minimum penetration rate as set by the licensing authority.

During the auction process, the first of its kind to be held in the liberalised market after Cyprus joined the European Union, Areeba knocked out the likes of Greek telecoms giant OTE and other bidders from Europe.

Areeba was a wholly owned subsidiary of Investcom LLC Luxemburg of Lebanese interests, which in May 2006 was taken over by the South Africa-based MTN Group for USD 5.526 bln.

The MTN Group was established in 1994 and is currently listed in South Africa on the JSE Securities Exchange.

In Cyprus, MTN offers a variety of choices with Pay Monthly and Pay as You Go services. It employs 200 mostly young professionals and is headed by CEO Bassel Jamaleddine.

In June, MTN Group reported over 48 mln subscribers. It is a global sponsor of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa and has exclusive mobile content rights for Africa and the Middle East.

      More Chinese?
Yesterday Standard Bank announced its China deal. Today speculation in the market was a possible further investment into MTN by China Mobile. This led MTN shares up 5,5% to new highs today. The Hang Seng index shot to a new record today at 30 562 this morning up 50% this year and an indication of the wealth created and looking for global investments.

Parallels are starting to be drawn against the Chinese market of late and the Japanese bubble market into the 1980’s, when on 29 Dec 1989, it reached a high of 38957. Now at 16 505.

The Hang Seng index is a market cap weighting of 40 companies listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Its base amount was 100 on 31 July 1964, passed 10 000 level in Dec 1993, 20 000 in December 2006 and today set a new high at 30 562.

The Chinese and related Hong Kong market appear to be in bubble territory – surging at an unbelievable pace with shares trading on very high multiples of 40 and 50 and more. I listened to an interview with Warren Buffett yesterday about his sale of Petro China recently. It has surged 76% this year. Berkshire paid $488 million and they were worth $3,3 billion at the end of 2006.

Its market cap has risen to now being the second biggest in the world after Mobile Exxon. The company plans to list on the Shanghai exchange in early November and will be one of the biggest IPO’s ever. China and Hong Kong have been running dual listed with restrictions. The mainland China A shares have typically traded at a massive premium to the Hong Kong listed H shares

The Chinese CSI300 index – which tracks the 300 A shares listed in Shanghai or Shenzen stock exchanges - has risen over 300% over the last 12 months.

China Mobile is a big company by any standards. It is the largest mobile phone operator in China and when ranked in terms of subscribers, the biggest in the world, with around 350 million subscribers signing up at a rate of 5m a month.

It is also the largest company now listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange and according to wikipedia, the largest company registered in Hong Kong. Today’s rumour that the company may make a bid for some or all of MTN has a lot of merit. MTN has expanded substantially beyond SA borders. With big operations into Africa, especially in Nigeria and also into Iran, again, like with Standard Bank, a tie up with a large and growing

MTN is a large SA company with a market cap of R237 billion ($36,5 bn), trades on an historical PE of 20,5 times with a profit after tax of R12 billion for the last full year to December 2006. At June this had increased to R6,3 billion for the 6 months.

The company has 3 main geographic areas, Southern Africa, West and Central Africa and Middle East and North Africa. West Africa is currently the biggest earning generator.

Its going to be interesting to see how this develops. Are South African companies still targets for foreign multinationals with plenty of capital and ability to raise cash? Perhaps so.

Investors with their investment strategy in place, have not been worried as the nominal price on the market increase. For investors that are concerned that they are perhaps not maximising opportunities, feel free to contact me.

Have a great weekend and enjoy the Currie Cup final – our office has a bias to the …… Cheetahs.

MTN stock jumps 6.5 pct on China Mobile bid talk
      Fri 26 Oct 2007, 13:01 GMT

[-] Text [+] By Ron Derby

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Shares in sub-Saharan Africa's largest mobile phone operator MTN jumped over 6 percent on Friday, with analysts saying the group could become a potential takeover target for China Mobile.

"I think the share is largely moving on speculation of a possible take-out following Standard's transaction yesterday. In the past there was speculation that China Mobile was looking at MTN," Cadiz African Harvest portfolio manager, Rajay Ambekarr said.

China's biggest lender ICBC on Thursday announced plans to purchase 20 percent of Standard Bank for $5.6 billion -- the largest ever foreign investment in Africa.

By 1339 GMT, MTN shares were 5.75 percent stronger at 120 rand, the biggest gainer among blue chips, with the Top-40 index

      up 1.12 percent.

"The MTN Group cannot comment on market speculation," MTN spokeswoman Nozipho January-Bardill said in a statement.

Richard Ferguson, director of global emerging markets research at Nomura, told Reuters it was possible China Mobile -- the world's top cellular carrier by subscribers -- might launch a bid for MTN.

"There is a scarcity of value in emerging markets and MTN would be a logical target, I would have thought," Ferguson told Reuters from London.

In its first foray outside its home market, China Mobile earlier this year agreed to buy an 89 percent stake in money-losing Pakistan operator Paktel Ltd. for $284 million.

"China Mobile in Hong Kong and its parent company in Beijing have a stated aim to derive a significant proportion of their revenues from overseas. China Mobile has over $40 billion, with that amount you must make a sizeable transaction, therefore MTN looks like a sensible target," he added.

MTN -- which is currently in talks with fixed line operator Telkom regarding the sale of certain of Telkom's assets -- has a market capitalisation of close to $35.29 billion.

Ferguson said the Chinese have targeted South Africa, Nigeria, Cameroon, Zambia, Congo-Brazzaville and Angola as countries they would want to enter, mainly due to rich natural resources. MTN has a presence in five of those markets.

      Hallo !
      "In Business Today

MTN Group maintains emerging markets leadership as subscribers exceed 54 million

      31 October 2007
      MTN
      Highlights
      - SEA region subscriber base up 5% for quarter ended 30 September 2007
      - WECA region subscriber base up 9% for quarter ended 30 September 2007
      - MENA region subscriber base up 36% for quarter ended 30 September 2007

The MTN Group is pleased to announce that it recorded 54,162,000 subscribers across its 21 operations for the quarter ended 30 September 2007, a 12% increase from 48,346,000 subscribers recorded at 30 June 2007.

The South and East Africa (SEA) region contributed 33% (June 2007: 35%) of the Group’s total subscribers while the West, East and Central Africa (WECA) and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) regions contributed 47% (June 2007: 48%) and 20% (June 2007: 17%) respectively.

Says MTN Group President and CEO, Mr Phuthuma Nhleko: “I am pleased with the steady growth of our subscriber base during this last quarter, especially the progress we are making at MTN Irancell, which launched in earnest in January 2007 and has already exceeded 3,7 million subscribers.”

The SEA region increased its subscriber base by 5% for the quarter ended 30 September 2007. Growth in the region was driven mainly by MTN Group’s South African operation, with subscribers increasing by 3%. Postpaid net connections have now normalised following the unwinding of the specific on biller agreement. There has been a restatement of the South African subscribers and ARPU which now reflects MTN’s consolidated South African operation (the restated history is available at www.mtn.com). MTN Uganda subscribers increased 12% to 2,094,000 due to more competitive pricing.

In the WECA region the 9% growth was driven largely by MTN Nigeria, which recorded a 7% increase in subscribers to 14,985,000. The aggressive network rollout plan is addressing the quality and capacity issues following the high rate of subscriber acquisitions since the last quarter of 2006.

Ghana increased its subscriber base by 14% to 3,872,000 underpinned by strong operational execution of the network rollout. In addition, Cameroon increased subscribers by 15% to 2,238,000 due to increased marketing activities.

The MENA region recorded a 36% increase in subscribers mainly due to strong growth from start-up operations in Iran, which increased subscribers by 88% to 3,720,000. There was also continued strong growth in Afghanistan (66%), Sudan (24%) and Syria (12%).

MTN South Africa’s Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) increased, on a comparable basis, by 1% to R146. Nigerian and Ghanaian ARPUs remained strong at $17 and $16 respectively. "

"Nomura cuts MTN to "neutral" from "buy"
      Thu 1 Nov 2007, 15:29 GMT

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Nomura International downgraded South African cell phone operator MTN Ltd on Thursday to "neutral" from "buy" after its share price outperformed.

"MTN's Q3 2007 subscriber and ARPU data were respectable and in line with our expectations," a research note said.

"These positive data are already well reflected in the current share price, which has risen some 23 percent in October, compared with the 4 percent rise of the South African All-share Index."

Nomura said it had increased its fair value of the shares to 123 rand from 117 rand. The shares closed at 124.40 on Thursday.

"MTN Group's national long-term rating affirmed at 'A+(zaf)' - Fitch
MUMBAI (Thomson Financial) - Fitch Ratings said it has affirmed MTN Group Ltd' (Nachrichten) s national long term rating at 'A+(zaf)' with a stable outlook, reflecting the mobile operator's continued strong operating margins, healthy cash flows, moderate leverage and strong liquidity.

The ratings agency said MTN is exposed to relatively high country risk outside of South Africa and with the strong growth in many of these markets, the proportion of earnings being derived from higher risk environments is likely to increase in future.

      Hallo !
      FAZ_Net vom 27.11.2007 :

South Africa's MTN Group raised to 'A2.za' with positive outlook - Moody's
MUMBAI (Thomson Financial) - Moody's Investors Service affirmed the global scale issuer rating of MTN Group Ltd (News) at 'Baa3' and upgraded its national scale rating to 'A2.za' from 'A3.za'.

The outlook on the ratings was changed to positive.

According to Moody's, the upgrade of the national scale rating and positive outlook reflect the company's strong position as the number two mobile telecoms operator in the maturing South African market as well as its leading market position in most of the 21 countries in which it operates, including Nigeria.

The rating upgrade and outlook change are

further supported by the group's strong and improving financial metrics, strong subscriber growth, sustainable business model and a solid and improving track record of managing investments in emerging markets and successfully upstreaming dividends.

However, the ratings remain constrained by the risks associated with the business environments in most of the markets in which MTN operates, some political and regulatory risk associated with the less mature or unpredictable nature of MTN's markets outside South Africa, the perceived challenges posed to the ability of the group to upstream dividends and management fees over the long term and some degree of event risk associated with possible M&A activity though this has diminished to some degree as a concern, Moody's added.

Übernahmegerüchte , wieder mal seit China Telekom vom Oktober ?letzten Jahres :

"Vodafone will bei südafrikanischem Mobilfunkbetreiber MTN einsteigen

(ck)

Friday April 25, 08:48 AM Bharti may bid for South Africa's MTN - FT

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Bharti Airtel, India's top mobile phone firm, may bid for South African telecommunications group MTN in what would be its biggest foreign acquisition, the Financial Times reported on Friday.

The newspaper quoted an unidentified person familiar with the deliberations as saying that Bharti's board members were in advanced discussions about its growth strategy, which had largely been organic to date.

The person said the board would decide whether to press ahead with a "transformational piece of M&A" and a bid for MTN was at the forefront of the ideas under consideration, although he said it was premature to say it would launch a tender offer.

The FT said Standard Chartered was advising Bharti and that Singapore Telecommunications, which owned 30.5 percent of Bharti at the end of 2007 and supported the plan, was being advised by Goldman Sachs.

Sunil Bharti Mittal, Bharti's founder and chairman, told the newspaper that Thursday's board meeting was "just about our quarterly results".

"Of course, we talk to people all the time and don't preclude anything. All I can tell you is how things stand today. That said, this is a competitive business environment and I do not want to be compromised by ruling things out for months."
India Bharti says MTN bid report untrue

      25.04.2008 ,8:36 GMT
[-] Text [+] JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Bharti Airtel Ltd and MTN Group denied on Friday a newspaper report that India's top mobile services company would bid for its South African-based counterpart.

"The Financial Times report is absolutely wrong," Bharti's joint managing director Akhil Gupta told CNBC television.

"But having said that we always maintain that we believe that maybe it's a good time for us now to look internationally for expansion. We will continue to do so and will continue to evaluate whatever comes to us, but the Financial Times report is not correct."

MTN, Africa's largest mobile phone operator, said in a statement it had received no specific proposal.

"MTN receives tentative approaches from time to time, which are always evaluated by the company. The board of MTN has not received any specific proposal and if and when there is anything specific to report, the market will be notified," it said.

The Financial Times report quoted an unidentified person familiar with the deliberations as saying that Bharti's board members were in advanced talks about its growth strategy, which had so far largely been organic.

The person said the board would decide whether to go ahead with a "transformational piece of M&A" and a bid for MTN was at the forefront of ideas being considered, although it was premature to say it would launch a tender offer.

Shares of MTN, with a market capitalisation of around $33 billion, rose as much as 6.7 percent on the report but later trimmed gains and were up 4 percent at 138.35 rand at 0922 GMT. The JSE blue-chip top-40 index was off 0.3 percent.

Bharti, India's fourth-most valuable firm at about $41 billion, rose 6.5 percent at 898.80 rupees at 0450 GMT, their highest level since February 7.

MTN has been the target of takeover speculation since at least 2004 when a newspaper reported that Norway's Telenor, could be in the running to buy MTN. The report was denied.

Last month, Britain's Vodafone Group denied a report it had been in talks with MTN about acquiring a stake in the South Africa's company's international operations.

"MTN is a quality asset. It's one of the better telecoms stories in Africa," Jan Mentjes, a portfolio manager at Gryphon Asset Management, said. "Whether this rumour about Bharti Airtel is true I will pay attention because I'm sure quite a few parties are looking at MTN."

      Bharti poised for MTN signal
By Jo Johnson in New Delhi and Alec Russell in Johannesburg

      Published: May 2 2008 18:26 | Last updated: May 2 2008 18:26

Bharti Airtel, India’s leading mobile operator, said it could “move pretty quickly” if the board of MTN, the South Africa-based telecoms group, puts itself up for sale on Monday.Sunil Bharti Mittal, chairman and managing director of Bharti Airtel, told the Financial Times that he had “been approached by bankers in the last few months in a much more frenzied manner” but had not formally discussed any bid for MTN with his own board.

“I’m always willing to listen to investment bankers, but the real point is whether there is actually a possibility to do this deal,” he said. “We’ll never know unless MTN itself were to come back to us. It’s not come to the stage where I’ve taken it to my board.”

Bankers revealed that Anil Ambani, chairman of Reliance Communications, held extensive talks with Phuthuma Nhleko, MTN chief executive, in the first quarter of 2007 and was poised to re-enter the fray.

The two Indian operators would be unlikely to have a clear run at MTN. Several leading global players, including China Mobile and Vodafone, have analysed how their businesses would combine with those of the Johannesburg-based group.

One telecom executive said: “Everybody has now talked to MTN and the company has been completely analysed to death but its board is still debating what to do. The strategy seems to work, I guess, because the share price keeps going up.”People close to the MTN board said it would not want to be seen selling 100 per cent of one of South Africa’s flagship companies to foreign bidders, but would be open to other structures. The board, which meets on Monday, is chaired by Cyril Ramaphosa, a politician-turned-businessman.

Bankers said no transaction would be politically acceptable unless it involved an integrated management structure, with a dual headquarters and dual listing. Black empowerment groups would also need to keep equity stakes.

People close to the situation said in one possible structure, Bharti would make a partial tender offer for a 51 per cent stake in MTN. The South African group could then keep its listing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

MTN has a market capitalisation of $35.6bn and little net debt.

Mr Mittal said Bharti would have no difficulty in raising funds if required. “Money’s not an issue. Our net debt is just $70m,” he said. “The whole world wants to fund us.”

But bankers warned that financing the purchase of 100 per cent of MTN would be a “struggle” for the Indian operators in nervous capital markets. One suggested that Bharti might team up with a sovereign wealth fund if it decided to go ahead with an offer.

Investment banks are jockeying for position on a deal. Bank of America is advising Reliance; Merrill Lynch and Deutsche Bank are advising MTN; Standard Chartered is advising Bharti; and Singtel, which owns 30.5 per cent of Bharti, is being advised by Goldman Sachs.

      Bharti confirms interest in MTN
Indian operator Bharti Airtel has confirmed that it is discussions with South Africa-based MTN Group, in a move that is rumoured to be valued at around $17bn and would potentially make the Indian operator among the largest in the world.

Bharti confirmed that it is in "exploratory discussion" on Monday, although it stressed that talks "are still at an early stage, are exploratory in nature and may or may not lead to any transaction".

As the biggest operator spanning the Middle East and Africa regions, MTN is something of an obvious target for major investors looking to increase their presence in high growth emerging markets.

MTN had a total subscription base of 68.2 million at the end of the first quarter, with operations in 21 countries. The carrier is 76.9 per cent publicly traded on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, so Bharti would have to make an offer to institutional and private investors to acquire a majority stake in the company.

MTN's $5.5bn acquisition of Investcom in 2006 expanded its footprint outside South Africa, but many of the markets in which it operates have relatively low penetration rates, making it a prime candidate for an acquisition approach.
