EDN, October 4; Esther Lam, DIGITIMES [Thursday 4 October 2007]

Episil Technologies is said will partner with E-ton Solar Tech on thin-film solar cell production with both parties about to raise NT$4 billion (US$122 million) for the partnership, according to a Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) report.

E-ton was cited by the paper as saying that the company has always been deploying in the thin-film solar cell segment with some companies now in talks for potential partnership. However, the company declined to reveal more details. Episil responded in claiming no knowledge about the speculation but indicated that the company is interested in tapping into the solar business.

TAIPEI, Oct 25 (Reuters) - Taiwan's E-Ton Solar (3452.TWO: Quote, Profile, Research) has joined with Lite-On Technology Corp (2301.TW: Quote, Profile, Research), Hermes-Epitek Corp. and MiTAC-SYNNEX Group to establish a firm to make thin-film solar cells, the company said late on Thursday.

E-Ton and photovoltaic parts maker Lite-On will be the largest shareholders with 23.9 percent each in the company, which will have an initial capacity of up to 60 megawatts (MW) and have the manufacturing facilities fully installed by the end of 2008, the company said in an e-mail statement.

Thin-film technology is potentially much cheaper to produce than traditional crystalline polysilicon solar cells.

Capacity at the company, called Auria Co., Ltd, is expected to grow by 60 MW per year, said E-Ton, and was established with an initial capital of T$1.4 billion ($43 million).

No details were offered on the stakes held by Hermes-Epitek and MiTAC-SYNNEX and other unamed venture capital companies.

Tight supply of silicon due to a booming market as oil prices soar and comparatively high costs of generating electricity from traditional crystalline solar cells is fuelling a rush of investment into thin-film technology.

The list of thin-film producers is growing and now includes the world's top two solar panel makers, Japan's Sharp Corp (6753.T: Quote, Profile, Research) and German-based Q-Cells AG (QCEG.DE: Quote, Profile, Research).

Industry executives say thin-film technology, while not yet as efficient at turning sunlight into power compared to crystalline cells, is more flexible and potentially transparent making it suitable for deployment over large areas such as in the windows of skyscrapers.

Dollar bauen.

Was man beim Stundenlohn spare, müsse man für zusätzliche Qualitätsprüfungen ausgeben.

Tight material supply to affect E-Ton revenues

      Latest news
Nuying Huang, Taipei; Rodney Chan, DIGITIMES [Tuesday 5 February 2008]

Taiwan-based E-Ton Solar Tech may report a slight sequential decline of 5% for its January sales, as new material supply from M.Setek has yet to arrive, according to industry sources. The contract it recently signed with M.Setek for polysilicon supply will not take effect until April, and in the meantime its current supply is unable to sustain strong sales growth, the sources said.

The sources said M.Setek's long-term material supply accounts for 70% of E-Ton's output, which totaled 60MWp in 2007 on a capacity of 200MWp. E-Ton sales shot up to NT$869 million (US$27.16 million) in December 2007 to hit a new company record for the seventh consecutive month, as the solar cell maker received a large quantity of one-off material supply during the last month of the year.

The solar cell maker may still be able to see its January sales stay above the NT$800 million mark, although no new revenue record will be set, the sources said. Its fellow competitors Motech Industries and Gintech Energy both have reported record sales for January, at NT$1.59 billion and NT$1.11 billion respectively.

Meldung vom Donnerstag, 7. Februar 2008

Citing bookings at an ongoing solar energy show in Spain, Chi-Yao Tsai, general manager of E-ton Solar Tech, highlighted that the amount has already exceed the planned capacity for 2009.

At the Solar Energy Conference (September 1 to 4) at Feria Valencia in Valencia, Spain, number of customers approaching E-ton is more than expected, said Tsai. Bookings for 2009 have already exceeded the planned annual capacity of 440 peak megawatt (MWp) that E-ton has set for next year. But Tsai added that E-ton will only ink contracts after accessing customer background and contract terms.

Based on customers' projections, executives from E-ton indicated that customers have a positive outlook for strong solar cell demand in 2009. Most companies that have contacted E-ton are looking for long-term partnership opportunities. These customers include those leading solar module and system makers, the executives noted.

E-Ton Solar unveils new monocrystalline solar cells with 18.17% conversion rate

Nuying Huang, Taipei; Adam Hwang, DIGITIMES [Wednesday 8 October 2008]

E-Ton Solar Tech, a Taiwan-based producer of mono- and poly- crystalline silicon solar cells, at an October 7 institutional investor conference exhibited its new monocrystalline solar cells produced from 5-inch silicon wafers with an energy conversion rate of 18.17%, currently the highest level for such products in Taiwan, the company claimed.

The energy conversion rate for solar cells produced from 5-inch monocrystalline wafers stands at 17% at maximum and 16.5% on average, whereas E-Ton's new products will have an average level of 17.9% for volume production, the company pointed out. The lead in average conversion rate can result in an increase in gross margin from volume production by about five percentage points, E-Ton indicated.

E-Ton plans to begin shifting a portion of its production capacity of monocrystalline solar cells for volume production of the new solar cells in the first or second quarter of 2009 and expects to turn out 50MWp next year, the company noted. All of the capacity will be shifted to making the new products in 2010, E-Ton said.

E-Ton plans to expand its total production capacity from 320MWp in 2008 to 440MWp in 2009, the company indicated. The output in 2009 is projected to be 300MWp of which monocrystalline and polycrystalline models will each account for 50% with the former's maximum conversion rate to be hiked to 19% and the latter's to 16.5%, the company pointed out.

E-Ton has signed contracts to supply solar cells of at least 400MWp in 2009, which is more than its 2009 target output, the company noted.

      Latest news
Nuying Huang, Taipei; Adam Hwang, DIGITIMES [Tuesday 11 November 2008]

Motech Industries and E-Ton Solar Tech, two major Taiwan-based crystalline silicon solar cell makers, witnessed a slip in revenues for October 2008 mainly because they turned away low-price orders, according to the two companies.

Motech booked revenues of NT$2.101 billion (US$64 million) a slip of 10.20% sequentially while E-Ton recorded sales of NT$1.501 billion a drop of 6.86%. Motech's September 2008 revenues represented the company's sixteenth consecutive record high and E-Ton was also on a seven month earnings streak.

Several smaller players in Taiwan and China quoted as low as US$2.8 per watt in the spot market in September-October 2008 mainly because they were short of cash, but Motech was unwilling to join the price-cut competition in order to maintain a certain level of profitability, the company emphasized. Motech's annual production capacity of 60MWp in China came into operation in September 2008, with expected output of 10MWp for this year, the company said.

E-Ton has been preparing to shift its production to higher energy conversion rate solar cells, and only accepted orders with prices above US$3 per watt in October, the company indicated. E-Ton quoted US$3.3 per watt on average for contract supply for the third quarter of 2008 and may lower its contract prices by up to 5% in November-December this year, the company noted.

First Company in Asia to Commence Production of Thin-Film Silicon Solar Modules using Oerlikon's Micromorph® End-to-End Solution

Truebbach, Switzerland, December 17, 2008 - Oerlikon Solar the world's leading supplier of thin-film silicon photovoltaic (PV) production equipment, today announced that Auria Solar (Taiwan) is now the first customer in Asia to begin production of thin-film silicon solar modules using Oerlikon's micromorph® technology. Thanks to intensive cooperation between Oerlikon Solar and Auria's dedicated engineering and R&D teams, Auria Solar has already produced its first micromorph® thin-film solar cell modules - less than four months after the equipment was delivered in August 2008. Full-volume production will commence in Q1 2009 with yearly output capacity exceeding 60 MWp, helping Auria Solar move toward its goal of producing 500 MWp annually by 2012. Auria executives expressed strong confidence that the company will start to earn revenue as early as 2009, as present capacity has already been fully booked.

"The elements required to successfully compete in the global thin-film market include innovative and proven technology, end-to-end capabilities and extensive customer service that enable manufacturers to increase production as quickly and efficiently as possible," said Dr. Chi-Yao Tsai, CEO of Auria Solar. "Oerlikon Solar offers the strongest combination of these qualities and has consistently demonstrated that the company not only has proven technology but also has the ability to deliver and ramp-up systems in an extremely timely fashion."

Oerlikon Solar's micromorph process significantly boosts solar cell efficiency by adding a second microcrystalline absorber to the amorphous silicon (a-Si) layer. This layer converts the energy of the red- and near-infrared spectrum, facilitating efficiency increases of up to 50 percent. The micromorph technology also bolsters overall module power, enabling its customers to produce cost-effective thin-film silicon solar modules.

"Oerlikon Solar's proven ability to rapidly deliver production lines to customers significantly reduces their time to market. This is a key differentiator that separates Oerlikon from our competition," said Jeannine Sargent, CEO Oerlikon Solar. "Our best-in-class production solutions combine our mature mass-production technology with unmatched output and performance guarantees, enabling us to offer our customers something that no other company can. Auria Solar starting production represents another milestone in Oerlikon Solar's mission to make solar power economically viable as an alternative, sustainable energy solution."

      Latest news
Nuying Huang, Taipei; Adam Hwang, DIGITIMES [Tuesday 23 December 2008]

BP Solar International, a subsidiary of BP (previously named British Petroleum), has decided to shut down its factory of solar cells and panels at Sydney, Australia, at the end of March 2009, the company will outsource production to a China-based maker as well as Taiwan-based Motech Industries and E-Ton Solar Tech, with the latter two each obtaining a 3-year order for 150MWp (megawatt-peak) of solar cells in total, according to industry sources in Taiwan.

Motech and E-Ton neither confirmed not denied the report. The two companies will undertake the outsourced production from early 2009 to 2011, the sources indicated.

According to a BP Solar press release, the closing of the factory was because the production scale was too small to be competitive in cost in the global market and expansion of the factory was not practical. BP Solar still maintains production in the US, India, Spain and China, the company indicated.

In related news, Motech's board of directors on December 22 approved the company's plan to add investment in US-based AE Polysilicon through purchasing 6.733 million preferred shares issued by the latter at US$45 million, thereby increasing its stake in the latter to 25.38%, according to a Motech filing with the Taiwan Stock Exchange. AE Polysilicon is scheduled to enter into trial production of solar-grade polycrystalline silicon at the beginning of the second quarter of 2009 and volume production will kick off the following quarter, Motech pointed out.

TSMC mulling equity investment in solar cell maker E-Ton, say sources

Claire Sung, Hsinchu; Jessie Shen, DIGITIMES [Monday 7 September 2009]

Executives of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) have recently paid several visits to E-Ton Solar Tech to evaluate the possibility of making an equity investment in the solar cell maker, according to industry sources.

The sources said TSMC is currently in talks regarding a purchase price to acquire an almost 20% stake in E-Ton.

TSMC has declined to comment on the speculation. The pure-play foundry in August 2009 approved a budget of US$50 million for solar energy-related investments.

TSMC, through venture capital affiliate VentureTech Alliance, recently acquired a portion of the stake in Neo Solar Power, another Taiwan-based solar cell maker, indicated the sources. As TSMC's recently acquired holdings in Neo Solar are not high enough to warrant a disclosure to the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TSE), details of the investment will only be revealed in the foundry's financial report for the second half of 2009, the sources said.

The Chinese-language Commercial Times citing industry sources as saying that TSMC is looking to ultimately increase its stake in Neo Solar to 25%. The foundry reportedly reached an agreement with Powerchip Semiconductor Corporation (PSC) to take over the DRAM maker's 9.7% stake in Neo Solar.

      E-Ton mulling cell capacity expansion
      08 September 2009 | By Mark Osborne | News > Cell Processing

Although the current weakness in demand has seen E-Ton unprofitable in the first-half of 2009, the solar cell manufacturer is said to be mulling plans for capacity expansions as demand from customers, notably in China and other parts of Asia has been improving. E-Ton shipped 30MW in Q109 and 50MW of solar cells in 2Q09, however the company is expecting shipments to increase to approximately 60MW in 3Q09.

E-Ton is reported to have a current capacity of 320MW, predominantly multi-crystalline based. The company could look at expanding production to over 400MW in 2010 and beyond in tandem with a focus on cell efficiencies of over 16% for multi-crystalline and 18% for mono. E-Ton is also focusing on 6” cells with improved efficiencies and higher production output.

      E-Ton posts loss for 2009

Nuying Huang, Taipei; Adam Hwang, DIGITIMES [Monday 8 February 2010]

Taiwan-based solar cell maker E-Ton Solar Tech has reported unaudited 2009 net loss of 892.473 million (US$27.21 million). It attributed the loss to investment in Gloria Solar International Holding (GIH), its 52.82%-owned subsidiary which suffered net loss of US$51.138 million in 2009.

GIH, whose business is recovering, may break even in the first half of 2010 and swing to profit in the second half, E-Ton said.

According to E-Ton, California-based Ameda Technologies, GIH's wholly-owned subsidiary that makes solar-grade monocrystalline silicon ingots, has a capacity of 48MWp and is expected to turn out 18MWp in 2010. Solar cell maker E-Ton Solar Tech posted losses of NT$46.8 million (US$1.49 million) or NT$0.21 per share, in the first quarter of 2010. Non-operating losses, yield rates and customer mix were the main reasons for the poor results, according to company president Ian Chao.

Business operation was profitable in the first quarter but overall results were hampered by NT$125.9 million in non-operating losses, Chao added.

Losses from US-based subsidiary Gloria Solar International Holdings (GIH) amounted to US$72 million, mainly due to low capacity utilization at Adema Technologies, a GIH wholly-owned subsidiary, Chao said. Other non-operating losses included a NT$86 million write-off of 60% of its provision of bad debts. The rest will be written off in the second quarter.

With the China market accounting for more than 30% of its orders in the first quarter, average gross margin were 6.22%, Chao pointed out, adding that the company is currently reorganizing its customer mix to improve pricing.

Manufacturing cost also saw an increase with lower yield rate due the company's production ramp to fulfill rising demand and rush orders, said Chao.

As overall demand in the solar sector continues heating up, E-Ton's losses were a surprise to many, especially with positive news coming from fellow Taiwan-based solar makers.

Gintech Energy recently announced first-quarter earnings of NT$1.04 billion or NT$3.26 per share.

Neo Solar Power's shipments in the first quarter were satisfactory, and earnings should exceed NT$2 per share, according to market watchers.

Motech Industry has yet to publish first-quarter results, but the company indicated that it was profitable in the period.

E-Ton suffers 1H10 net loss of over NT$3 billion

Nuying Huang, Taipei; Adam Hwang, DIGITIMES [Monday 30 August 2010]

E-Ton Solar Tech, a Taiwan-based maker of crystalline silicon solar cells, has reported net losses of NT$3.011 billion (US$91.6 million) for the first half of 2010, equivalent to a net loss per share of NT$12.65.

The large net loss was mainly attributed to a net loss of NT$1.907 billion from non-operating investment in Adema Technologies, a California-based maker of solar-grade monocrystalline silicon ingots, and another net loss of NT$973 million from that in Gloria Solar International Holding which is the parent company of Adema, E-Ton explained. E-Ton has fully utilized its production capacity, the company pointed out.

However, E-Ton's gross margin of 6.48% for the first half of 2010 was much lower than figures posted by fellow makers, including 20% for Gintech Energy, 17.44% for Solartech Energy, 16.8% for Neo Solar Power and 16.69% for Motech Industries, according to industry sources.

E-Ton's board of directors on August 28 decided to raise additional paid-in capital of NT$600 million through issuing new shares, the company indicated.

Solar cell maker E-Ton reportedly seeking buyers from China

Nuying Huang, Taipei; Steve Shen, DIGITIMES [Thursday 16 September 2010]

Executives at E-Ton Solar Tech have recently visited China, sparking speculation that the solar cell maker is in talks with potential buyers. However, the company has claimed the rumors are untrue.

The rumor comes following a recent steep drop in E-Ton's share price after it posted a loss of over NT$12 (US$0.38) per share in the first half of 2010 which made the company a target for acquisition.

Since solar cells are not included in the early harvest list of the ECFA (Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement) signed between China and Taiwan, it is not attractive for China-based concerns to make investment in the segment, according to E-Ton.

Neo Solar posts NT$2.8 EPS, E-Ton ends 5-quarter losing streak

Nuying Huang, Taipei; Willie Teng, DIGITIMES [Thursday 21 October 2010]

Taiwan-based solar cell makers Neo Solar Power and E-Ton Solar Tech on October 20 announced third-quarter financial results. Neo Solar posted a NT$2.8 (US$0.09) EPS for the quarter, and E-Ton turned profitable after reporting losses for five consecutive quarters.

Neo Solar's third-quarter net income came to NT$650 billion. Gross margin rose to 22.8%, and cumulative net income through the first three quarters of 2010 totaled NT$1.96 billion or NT$8.95 a share.

Due to stock price fluctuations, Neo Solar had to write off losses from revaluations of its convertible bonds, the company said. Without the setback, Neo Solar's EPS was NT$3.97. Shipments for the first three quarters jumped 178% on year, said the company, noting that fourth-quarter demand remains strong and capacity should stay fully utilized.

E-Ton ended five straight months of losses in the third quarter of 2010 with a net income of NT$556 million or NT$2.11 a share. Burdened by the first half, E-Ton posted a net loss of NT$2.549 billion or NT$10.54 a share for the first three quarters in 2010.

After writing off losses from intangible assets in the first half, subsidiary Gloria Solar International Holding (GIH) turned profitable in the third quarter, and contributed roughly NT$17 million in profit. GIH has also ended its solar system operation in Europe as well as Adema's ingot production business to streamline and refocus the company's operation.

Though E-Ton's third-quarter gross margin rose from 6% in the second quarter, it remains in the single-digit range. Market watchers blame the low profitability on poor yield and production line turnover. E-Ton indicated that improvement is expected for the fourth quarter.

Auria aims to raise NT$10 billion via ESM listing, Gintech reaches 930MWp capacity ahead of schedule

Nuying Huang, Taipei; Willie Teng, DIGITIMES [Friday 22 October 2010]

Thin-film photovoltaic (PV) module maker Auria Solar turned profitable in the third quarter of 2010, and plans to raise NT$10 billion (US$324.51 million) via listing on Taiwan's Emerging Stock Market (ESM) at the end of the year, according to company chairman Tsai Chin-Yao, noting that public offering is ongoing.

Auria will bring module capacity from 60MWp currently to 200MWp by the end of 2011, Tsai said. When capacity reaches 200MWp, production cost will drop to US$1/W and down to US$0.5/W with 500MWp in capacity, Tsai indicated, adding that thin-film module cost is approaching levels competitive with mainstream crystalline silicon solutions. Auria's thin-film PV modules currently provide an average 10% conversion rate, and the company is looking to improve to 11% in 2011.

Auria reported more than NT$1 billion in revenues from January through September. Current monthly revenues are around NT$200 million.

In related news, solar cell maker Gintech Energy posted NT$7.73 billion in third-quarter revenues, up 11% sequentially. Revenues from January through September increased 103% from a year ago to NT$20.27 billion. The company is projecting to ship 800MWp for 2010, representing a 118% increase from 2009.

Gintech has also ramped up manufacturing capacity to 930MWp in October ahead of schedule.

Since the Japanese market currently constitutes 30% of Gintech's shipments, and thanks to a weakening US dollar and the Japanese yen rising at a stronger pace than the NT dollar, Gintech saw a modest profit from currency exchange rates. Gintech's net income for the first three quarters in 2010 could exceed NT$10, according market watchers.

Shares of E-Ton Solar soar after investment from Hon Hai

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Shares of solar cell producer E Ton Solar Tech Co. Ltd. soared yesterday after the Hon Hai Group, the world's largest contract electronic maker, agreed to acquire a stake in the company, dealers said.

The investment reflected Hon Hai's ambition to diversify its business into the renewable energy sector and boost its profit margin, they said.

E-Ton closed up 3.79 percent to NT$50.7 on the over-the counter (OTC) market. Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., the flagship company of the Hon Hai Group, gained 3.43 percent to NT$120.5 on Taiwan's stock exchange.

The Hon Hai Group announced Tuesday that five of its subsidiaries will acquire a 36.766 percent stake in E-Ton through a private placement for about NT$4 billion.

The group said the investment is an important step for Hon Hai to enter the solar energy business and demonstrated it was willing to expand in Taiwan.

Grand Cathay Securities analyst Mars Hsu said there had been speculation about the E-Ton investment deal for a long time, but the two companies had previously declined to comment on it.

“The announcement simply confirmed Hon Hai's determination to enter the solar energy business by buying existing production capacity instead of building new capacity on its own,” the analyst said.

Hsu said that compared with the Hon Hai Group's annual sales of around NT$3 trillion, E-Ton's NT$20 billion a year in sales was not a big deal.

“I believe the investment will not be the only solar energy investment for Hon Hai. I expect more acquisitions will come,” Hsu said. “To Hon Hai, the solar energy business will be a long-term investment.”

The NT$4 billion investment will, however, be extremely significant for E-Ton, which was carrying about NT$7.9 billion in debt at the end of the third quarter last year and posted a net loss of NT$2.55 billion in the first nine months of 2010, Hsu said.

“That's why investors are rushing to pick up E-Ton's shares this morning,” Hsu said.

The Hon Hai Group is one of many Taiwanese high-tech companies eager to diversify into renewable energy production in a bid to reduce the impact of the cyclical nature of their core business.

Vertical integration is crucial for solar industry, says Inventec chairman

Nuying Huang, Tainan; Jackie Chang, DIGITIMES [Monday 27 June 2011]

Inventec chairman, Yeh Kuo-yi, appeared in E-Ton Solar's shareholders meeting on June 24 for the first time since Inventec acquired the majority shares of the solar cell maker. According to Yeh, Inventec will see to vertically integrate the solar power business.

Yeh pointed out that Inventec has been searching for a new battlefield outside the PC market. Renewable energy has been viewed as a market that is suitable for development.

Inventec has a few solar business units including solar cell makers Inventec Solar Energy, E-Ton Solar and module maker Inventec Energy. Inventec will continue to vertically integrate upstream materials and downstream systems for its solar businesses.
