SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Wireless chipmaker Broadcom said on Sunday that number-two mobile phone maker Samsung Electronics was shipping next-generation handsets that use its chips to cellular operators.

The 3G phones, which can surf the Web and download data from the Internet faster than previous generations of phones, are on their way to operators in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and elsewhere, Broadcom said.

Number-one mobile phone maker Nokia has said it would buy phone chips from STMicroelectronics, Broadcom and Infineon, potentially decreasing the clout of market leaders Qualcomm and Texas Instruments, Nokia's long-time supplier.

Investors saw those earlier deals as key wins for Broadcom and STMicro as business from the leading mobile phone maker could promise a big-enough increase in sales volume to help them shoulder the cost of competing in the cash-intensive chip industry.

"The combined market share of those two companies (Nokia and Samsung) represents a significant market opportunity," said Yossi Cohen, who manages Broadcom's mobile platforms group.

Last year TI and Qualcomm each had about 20 percent of the mobile phone chip market, according to iSuppli. With a roughly 9 percent share, Freescale Semiconductor was next, but it is expected to lose market share as its main client, Motorola Inc, has also added TI and Qualcomm as suppliers.

Broadcom had a 1.4 percent market share in 2006 and STMicro had an almost 6 percent share.

The Broadcom chips that Samsung selected for its SGH-J750 and SGH-A401 3G phones include its BCM2133 EDGE baseband processor, the BCM2141 WCDMA co-processor, the BCM2045 Bluetooth transceiver and the BCM59001 power management unit.

Shares of Irvine, California-based Broadcom have risen 15 percent this year, compared with a 5.6 percent increase in the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index.

Nocheinmal der Hinweis auf die Charttechnik, eine seit einem Jahr laufende Seitwertsbewegung wurde heute nach oben durchbrochen.

BCM21551 Features Full CMOS RF, Rich Multimedia, Bluetooth(R), FM Radio, FM Transmitter and More, Packed on a Single 65nm Die to Slash Price, Size and Power

IRVINE, Calif., Oct. 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM - News), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced a new single-chip HSPA (high-speed packet access) processor that integrates all of the key 3G (third generation) cellular and mobile technologies on an extremely low power, single 65 nanometer CMOS die. Broadcom's new "3G Phone on a Chip" solution enables manufacturers to build next generation 3G HSUPA phones with breakthrough features, sleek form factors and very long battery life, all at a fraction of the cost of today's solutions - driving widespread consumer adoption. Never before has anyone integrated as many radio devices on a single chip, which demonstrates Broadcom's technology leadership in multi-modal CMOS RF technology.

Advancements in mobile phone designs, such as the proliferation of extensive Internet applications and web services, multimedia, high resolution video and still cameras, games and music, are driving a growing demand for faster cellular networks and an appetite for rich multimedia phones that can take advantage of them. HSUPA is often considered the ultimate cellular modem technology. There are already over 900 million subscribers in HSPA enabled networks today, and many network operators are planning massive worldwide deployment of HSUPA over the next several years. Using phones enabled by the new Broadcom® HSUPA processor, consumers will be able to download content at up to 7.2 Megabits per second (Mbps), and upload content such as pictures and videos at up to 5.8Mbps, all directly from their phone. HSUPA technology also holds the promise for much higher quality "live" video conferencing and an array of exciting services and applications.

Announced today is the BCM21551 3G "Phone on a Chip," which combines a high-speed HSUPA 3G baseband, a multi-band radio frequency (RF) transceiver, Bluetooth® 2.1 with enhanced data rate (EDR) technology, an FM radio receiver and an FM radio transmitter (for car stereo music playback). It can even be paired with other Broadcom devices, such as Wi-Fi® and GPS, PMU, or the new VideoCore® III mobile multimedia processor. No competing cellular baseband chip has ever achieved this level of integration, which drives down cost, power and size, while enabling an advanced level of functionality. This makes the BCM21551 an ideal choice for both "mass market" high volume 3G "feature phones" as well as smartphones running an open OS such as Symbian®, Windows Mobile®, or Linux®.

"Broadcom has already demonstrated commercial success with its EGPRS single-chip solution and multi-chip 3G solutions," commented Michael Thelander, CEO and Founder of Signals Research Group, LLC. "With this single chip solution, Broadcom is becoming a one-stop supplier of 3G/2G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth silicon solutions and communications software, positioning it to leapfrog many of its competitors from both a technology and market share perspective."

"With what we believe is more than a full year's lead over similar competing products, this new 3G solution should place Broadcom squarely at the head of the hyper-competitive 3G chip race," said Yossi Cohen, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Broadcom's Mobile Platforms Group. "We built upon the success of our single-chip EDGE solution and merely eight months later our engineers not only built a single chip HSUPA solution, but also integrated Bluetooth, FM radio, and the next level of multimedia. This is truly amazing engineering execution, a hallmark of Broadcom. Our investments in multi-modal CMOS RF and high definition multimedia technologies will further widen our mobile technology leadership in the coming years."

Broadcom and Avago Technologies Announce Advanced Features and New Price Points to Drive Bluetooth(R) Laser Mouse Products
Monday October 22, 8:00 am ET
Joint Reference Design Combines Best-in-Class Laser Navigation Sensors and Bluetooth to Enable High Performance Wireless Mice for Mass Market Adoption

IRVINE, Calif. and SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM - News), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, and Avago Technologies, a leading supplier of analog interface components for communications, industrial and consumer applications, today jointly announced a new low cost reference design platform for building laser mice based on Bluetooth® technology. The new reference design combines Broadcom's industry-leading Bluetooth silicon and software with Avago's revolutionary LaserStream(TM) mouse sensor technology, reducing the number of required components while simplifying the design process.

The Broadcom®/Avago(TM) reference design enables manufacturers to build full-featured Bluetooth laser mice at a cost that is substantially less than the cost of existing solutions. Laser mouse products based on this reference design will offer high quality performance, one-click pairing (enabled by Broadcom software) and over six months of battery life -- providing an ideal travel mouse solution for Bluetooth-enabled notebook PCs.

Bluetooth laser mice are increasingly popular because they provide more precise tracking over a variety of surfaces without the hassle of cords or cables. This is especially important for those who use mobile PCs in places where a suitable work surface is not always available. As a result, there is an increasing trend in the PC market for laser wireless mice that can track on many more surfaces than optical mice -- especially for mobile PCs and notebooks. Moreover, PC OEMs are now bundling Bluetooth wireless mice and other peripherals to provide a more complete computing system that interoperates and is optimized for use in today's smaller, faster and feature-rich PCs.

The Bluetooth laser mouse reference design includes a new navigation platform developed by Avago, and offers a wide range of high precision optical sensors that incorporate its LaserStream technology and Broadcom Bluetooth technology. This enables mouse manufacturers to build laser wireless mice with the most accurate control at a fraction of the current cost, as well as to offer low power operation that achieves more than six months of battery life. The reference design takes advantage of the fact that Bluetooth technology is already found in nearly 40 percent(i) of today's notebooks and has been developed and continually tuned to co-exist with Wi-Fi®, which also operates in the 2.4 GHz radio frequency, providing a superior user experience than other technologies used in wireless peripherals.

Avago, which pioneered optical sensing for mouse technology, and Broadcom are working with several of the world's leading device manufacturers to bring Bluetooth-enabled laser mice products to market. By leveraging highly integrated components and other cost saving techniques that reduce the overall system cost for PC manufacturers, these partners expect to significantly reduce manufacturing costs.

"As the size and form factor of today's PCs continue to shrink, this miniaturization is driving the requirement for peripheral devices such as computer mice, keyboards and other related devices to be smaller and offer more features," said Kee-Hane Ngoh, Vice President and General Manager, Navigation Products Division, Avago Technologies. "By sharing our design resources and bringing together Avago's best-in-class LaserStream sensor and Broadcom's Bluetooth solution, our companies have set a new standard for laser mouse functionality and cost."

Combining and Enhancing Two Leading Technologies

The new Bluetooth reference design, co-developed by Broadcom and Avago, specifies everything a manufacturer needs to build a three-button laser mouse with a tilt scroll wheel. It incorporates Avago's patented LaserStream technology, which provides high performance and low power laser sensors that deliver fast and accurate mouse control. Utilizing Avago's new second generation LaserStream mouse input device, which is a highly integrated solution to increase productivity and yield rate, this design enables enhanced mouse tracking on glossy, metal, tile, marble and other smooth surfaces where LED-based optical mice are ineffective. Moreover, Avago's LaserStream mouse sensors feature lower power, enhanced mouse tracking and high sensitivity making it ideal for use in high performance PC applications.

Bluetooth is quickly proliferating into many PCs and human interface devices (HID), creating an ecosystem of products that can wirelessly connect for a variety of entertainment and communication applications. As the leading supplier of Bluetooth solutions for these consumer devices, Broadcom is continually improving the Bluetooth experience by making it simpler to use wireless products. The new laser mouse reference design features Broadcom software that allows users to pair Bluetooth devices to their PC with a single keystroke. The application is part of Broadcom's Bluetooth for Windows (BTW) software, which can be pre-installed by PC OEMs or shipped as a CD ROM for after-market installation.

"The value of Bluetooth connectivity increases exponentially for every device that is added to someone's personal area network," said Scott Bibaud, Vice President and General Manager of Broadcom's Wireless Personal Area Networking line of business. "By collaborating with the world's leading supplier of mouse sensors, we are enabling device manufacturers to hit new price points that put high quality Bluetooth peripherals into the hands of more consumers."
