Silicon Image Presents First Platinum Partnership Award to Credence Systems for Revolutionary PanelLink DVI Test Methodology
Strategic partnership enabled Silicon Image to Bring Fastest Chip on the Motherboard to Market
SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 11, 2000-- Silicon Image, Inc. (Nasdaq:SIMG - news), a leading provider of high-bandwidth semiconductor solutions, today announced that it has presented Credence Systems (Nasdaq:CMOS - news) with its first Platinum Partnership Award in recognition of Credence`s ongoing cooperative efforts to develop creative gigabit test solutions for Silicon Image`s PanelLink® Digital Visual Interface (DVI) chips. This development partnership has been key to Silicon Image`s ability to quickly bring its high-speed PanelLink chips to market and into volume production with high quality. With a bandwidth of up to 5 gigabits/sec, Silicon Image`s PanelLink chip is the fastest chip on the motherboard. PanelLink has become the leading implementation of the DVI interface, which is a critical enabler of the emerging and rapidly growing digital display market.

Commenting on the unique relationship between the two companies, Silicon Image Vice President of Operations Jalil Shaikh noted, ``When we were developing our first PanelLink chip, there wasn`t a system on the market capable of testing a chip operating at 2 gigabits/sec. Credence believed we had a unique product offering with broad market appeal, and they had the foresight and willingness to help us develop new test methodologies to accommodate our high-speed chip. In fact, they were so confident of our vision that they provided us with dedicated engineers and implemented a full-scale production/test program so we could test every chip.``

Shaikh continued, ``Their commitment has been unwavering, and we believe this close development collaboration benefits our customers by enabling us to economically provide high-bandwidth solutions at the highest quality within the shortest timeframe. As a result of this collaboration, Silicon Image has an extremely reliable product and has one of the industry`s lowest failure rates as measured in ppms. This low failure rate has been one of the instrumental factors in enabling us to capture the lead position in the digital display market.``

David Ranhoff, chief operating officer at Credence, commented, ``We are pleased to receive this recognition from Silicon Image for a partnership that has been mutually beneficial. Testing a high-bandwidth chip for the cost-sensitive PC market is a difficult challenge. The inherent technical hurdles are complicated by the need to conduct the testing cost-effectively. If testing expenditures increase, the cost of the chip will also rise--possibly pricing the chip out of the very mass markets it is designed to address. To resolve this challenge, we took an untraditional approach--working together to quantify the data necessary to synchronize the device and the tester. Specifically, this was achieved by approaching the instrumentation differently, conducting highly precise tests and performing design tweaks that allowed us to gain access to the necessary data.``

In addition to providing Silicon Image with dedicated engineers to address technical issues, Credence provided worldwide resources for testing and support. As a fabless semiconductor manufacturer, Silicon Image outsources the testing of its chips to various international test houses. In addition to having a Credence tester onsite for its own development purposes, Silicon Image has its test subcontractors use Credence systems since they are the only ones that utilize the methodologies specific to testing Silicon Image`s PanelLink chips.

Both companies are committed to a strategic relationship with sharing of proprietary information such as technology and product roadmaps, testing results and forecasts. This ongoing dialogue enables the companies to work in parallel, planning products while taking the other partner`s roadmap into consideration.
