(MT Newswires) -- Colgate-Palmolive (CL) reported higher results in the second quarter as organic sales grew across the company's divisions apart from North America, but the company said it sees 2021 adjusted earnings growing at the low end of its guidance range amid headwinds from raw material and logistics costs.
The New York-based toothpaste and soap maker said Friday adjusted earnings increased to $0.80 per share from $0.74 per share a year ago, in line with the consensus on Capital IQ. Sales in the quarter ended June 30 rose to $4.26 billion from $3.9 billion. The Street forecast was $4.24 billion.
"We are pleased that our strong growth momentum continued in the second quarter, even as we operated in an environment marked by significant volatility," said Chief Executive Officer Noel Wallace in a statement.
Colgate-Palmolive faced several headwinds during the second quarter, including raw material costs and logistics as well as the impact of COVID-19 restrictions in some markets. "We expect that all of these factors will continue to impact our business through the second half of this year," Chief Investor Relations Officer John Faucher said on an earnings call, according to a transcript by Capital IQ.
The company said it now expects full-year 2021 adjusted earnings per share to be at the lower end of its previously announced guidance of growth in the mid- to high-single-digit range. It also affirmed its sales growth outlook of 4% to 7% and organic sales growth estimate of 3% to 5%. The Street forecasts $3.28 in adjusted EPS and $17.45 billion in sales.
While total organic sales increased 5% in the most recent quarter, North America saw the sales drop 4.5% due to declines in personal care and home care in the US, partially offset by growth in oral care.
Latin America organic sales grew 8.5%, led by Brazil and Mexico but that was somewhat countered by the decline in Colombia due to political unrest there, Faucher said.
Europe division increased 5% with a growth in the mid-teens in oral care, despite a decline in personal and home care. Asia Pacific rose 1% due to the growth of Colgate Vedshakti and Colgate Panjaved toothpastes in India and Thailand, respectively, Faucher said. Africa/Eurasia organic sales climbed 13% while Hill's Pet Nutrition division jumped 15%, driven by a pet obesity campaign.
