Tommy

The Timing Is Right For Kinbauri Gold To Cash In On Its Investment In Spanish Gold
Timing is everything in the mineral exploration business and this fact has not been lost on Vern Rampton and his team at Canadian-listed Kinbauri Gold. Back in 2007 the company acquired the gold assets of Rio Narcea Gold Mines in northwestern Spain for only US$5 million. The acquisition included two exploration properties, the El Valle and Carles gold-copper mines, which had a history of recent production amounting to a million ounces of gold and 47 million pounds of copper over an eight year period.
These properties also came with some fixed assets, including a 2,000 tonnes per day mill and a tailings disposal facility, which together have a combined value that could be pegged at about US$100 million.
So how did Kinbauri come to pick these assets up on the cheap? Well, Rio Narcea, which was subsequently taken over by Lundin Mining, put the project on care and maintenance in 2006 after determining that due to increasing mining costs the projects did not fit its growth profile. And, recognizing a great opportunity, Kinbauri laid down a US$5million bet that the past-producing gold-copper operations could be revived.
When Kinbauri bought the project, measured and indicated resources tallied 477,000 ounces of gold and 57.2 million pounds of copper, with an additional inferred resource of 845,000 ounces of gold and 25.5 million pounds of copper. Wasting little time, Kinbauri moved drill rigs onto the project with a view to expanding and upgrading the resources, and with an ultimate goal of getting both mines up and running again by 2011.
Fast forward to 2009 and the project now hosts a measured and indicated resource of 6.2 million tonnes grading 4.6 grams gold per tonne and 0.85% copper, plus an inferred resource of 6.6 million tonnes grading 5.2 grams gold per tonne and 0.55% copper. Combined, that equates to just over 2.2 million ounces of gold and 190 million pounds of copper. An independent scoping study envisions a nine year operation which will produce a total of 894,000 ounces of gold and 83.7 million pounds of copper.
According to the study, the potential for such an operation means that the project has a pretax net present value of C$132 million, at a 10 per cent discount, and an internal rate of return of 42 per cent. Payback, according to the study, ought to take around two years. Cash costs, including copper credits are expected to come in at US$372 per ounce, while capital costs ring in at nearly €90 million.
The study uses a US$750 per ounce gold price and a copper price of US$2.50 per pound, but at the current prices of over US$900 per ounce gold and US$1.50 per pound copper, the project generates a pretax net present value of in excess of US$221 million, and an internal rate of return of 58 per cent. In a nutshell, it looks like Kinbauri’s US$5 million bet is poised to reap generous returns.
"We are pleased with the results of the scoping study”, says Vern straightforwardly. He goes on to add that the “independent assessment confirms what Kinbauri believed to be a viable project with robust economics when it purchased the assets in 2007. The result of this study gives us a firm economic basis to proceed to feasibility and production. The situation is further enhanced with the potential of adding new resources with more drilling at El Valle/Carles."
Kinbauri is currently assessing “strategic alternatives” in advancing the project for the purpose of ensuring maximum shareholder value. This includes joint ventures, partnerships and even mergers. Given the demand today for advanced gold assets, especially if they are located in relatively safe jurisdictions like Spain, Kinbauri should be in the driver’s seat as it looks to cash in on its original US$5 million investment. It will be interesting to watch what the company does next.

Rio suspends iron ore pricing talks with Chinese mills
20.02.2009
RIO Tinto, the world's second-biggest iron ore producer, has suspended annual price negotiations for the steelmaking commodity with Chinese mills until market conditions improve.
Anthony Loo, managing director of Rio Tinto China, told Caijing magazine that iron ore negotiations had been suspended and that a price settlement may be completed after May.
“We hope conditions will be more normal after a few months, allowing for better negotiation with our Chinese customers,” Mr Loo told the magazine.
The first fall in the iron ore price in seven years is anticipated due to weakening demand for steelmaking products, and market expectations for a cut range between 20 per cent and 60 per cent.
The demand for iron ore has come off as China's pace of construction eases, while Japan is officially in a recession and many of its construction plans are being shelved or delayed.

London, UK - Calgary, Canada, 19th February, 2009 - Ithaca Energy Inc. ('Ithaca' or 'the Company') (TSX
Venture: IAE, LSE AIM: IAE) and its wholly owned subsidiary Ithaca Energy (UK) Limited, an independent oil
& gas company with exploration, development and production assets in the UK sector of the North Sea,
announces that the 42/21b-5z well has reached a total depth of 10029ft True Vertical Depth Subsea (TVDSS)
and coring operations are currently taking place.
The well, operated by Venture North Sea Gas Limited, is located at the crest of a prominent structure and
lies adjacent to the producing Garrow and Kilmar gas fields. The Joint Venture has agreed to deepen the
well and operations continue by running a 270 ft section of core through anticipated Lower Leman Sandstone
and underlying Namurian Millstone Grit Formation (Carboniferous) to accurately assess the reservoir
properties and thickness of any sands. After coring, it is planned to further deepen the well to
approximately 11200 ft TVDSS, which coincides with the depth of the structural closure of the Carna
prospect.
The Carna well was spudded on 26th December 2008 utilising the rig, Ensco 92, and was mechanically
sidetracked at 2,918 ft TVDSS on 23rd January 2009. Should the well be tested, the Ensco 92 rig may remain
at this location until at least mid March 2009, otherwise the rig will be released by the end of February
2009. On completion of Carna operations, the rig is scheduled to proceed to the Inner Moray Firth to
complete and tie-in Ithaca's Jacky development across the nearby Beatrice field production facility.
The co-venturers involved in the Carna prospect are Venture (56%, operator), Ithaca Energy (UK) Limited
(29.9%), Dyas UK Limited (10.1%) and EWE Aktiengesellschaft (4%).
