As a signer of the Cocoa Industry Protocol, we underscored our commitment as an industry member to work to support the eventual elimination of the worst forms of child and forced adult labor in cocoa growing
oder:
Abusive, dangerous or inappropriate work that may harm a child’s development, however, can never be condoned.
civil society organizations and governments, is working together with local communities in the effort to eliminate the worst forms of child labor and forced adult labor in the cocoa sector. While much work remains to be done, progress is being made.

Sprache:
Protecting children
Engaging with cocoa farming communities to protect children – Barry Callebaut, alongside other industry members, civil society organizations and governments, is working together with local communities in the effort to eliminate the worst forms of child labor and forced adult labor in the cocoa sector. While much work remains to be done, progress is being made.

About 70% of the world’s cocoa crop comes from West Africa. Cocoa is grown on some 2 million small family farms. Most family members including children usually help out from time to time. This is part of the agricultural tradition in West Africa, as in other countries around the world. Abusive, dangerous or inappropriate work that may harm a child’s development, however, can never be condoned.
Demonstrating our commitment
At Barry Callebaut, we support and respect the principles set forth in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We strongly condemn slavery and abusive labor practices including any form of child slavery or practices that exploit children or expose them to harmful or hazardous conditions.
As a signer of the Cocoa Industry Protocol, we underscored our commitment as an industry member to work to support the eventual elimination of the worst forms of child and forced adult labor in cocoa growing, in partnership with governments, business and civil society.
Barry Callebaut does not own any cocoa farms or plantations. We typically buy cocoa beans from farmer organizations or intermediaries and process them in our factories. However, we believe that protecting children is the shared responsibility of all parties in the cocoa value chain. In our programs where we work directly with farmer organizations and their farmer members, we have integrated child labor sensitization activities and we ask our business partners for their commitment to upholding our labor standards and policies.
Education program
Improving understanding, encouraging education – We promote education through our own programs where we work directly with farmer organizations and their cocoa farmer members. In addition, we partner with experienced local development experts and NGOs to engage community members in workshops and other activities to facilitate understanding about child labor issues and remedial actions.
We work directly with local representatives of the International Cocoa Initiative (ICI) to deliver child labor sensitization programs to farmers who are members of cooperatives in our Quality Partner Program (QPP) in Ivory Coast. In 2008/09, we had trained 1,410 farmers from 47 cooperatives to be trainers on child labor issues in their respective communities.
Working together with parents, teachers and communities
ICI is one of our partners on a three-year education project in Ivory Coast. Barry Callebaut funded the construction of a secondary school in Akoupé in the Adzopé cocoa growing region. The school, which was inaugurated in November 2009 and is now serving about 300 pupils, will be further developed to serve as a community learning center. The long-term aim of the project is that the center will benefit hundreds of people of all ages and cater to their formal and vocational education needs. The expanded curriculum will include adult literacy classes, farmer field school training, and programs for out-of- school youth.
Working closely with UCADA, a union of 18 cocoa farmer cooperatives representing some 8,000 farmers, ICI is developing a learning module on child labor sensitization. This module will be integrated into the expanded curriculum of the learning center. A training workshop and a village outreach session were held in 2009 for 5 UCADA representatives to prepare them to conduct training in outlying local communities. UCADA is a member of Barry Callebaut’s Quality Partner Program.

Was BC zu verstecken?
