Novartis eyes MediGene's cancer drug - sources
FRANKFURT, Sept 22 (Reuters) - Swiss drugmaker Novartis (News/Aktienkurs) has expressed interest in licensing in MediGene's experimental pancreatic cancer drug EndoTAG, joining rivals Eli Lilly, Roche and Pfizer, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.
In-licensing refers to buying rights to sell another company's drug.
'Novartis wants to start negotiations and has already obtained basic information,' one of the sources said.
Another source said interest in the drug has risen after recent clinical trial results showed patients with inoperable pancreatic cancer live substantially longer when given EndoTAG on top of standard chemotherapy.
MediGene, (News/Aktienkurs) which views Endotag as a potential blockbuster, declined to comment, as did Novartis.
A MediGene spokesman said final analysis of the Phase II study of Endotag -- key for any in-licensing deal -- is expected in the last quarter of the year.
MediGene shares turned positive on the news on Monday and rose 1.6 percent to 5.66 euros by 1345 GMT.
Medigene is the only German biotech group with two products on the market -- prostrate cancer drug Eligard and genital warts treatment Veregen.

wow...mittelschweres Erdbeben...
