      July 31, 2008 | about stocks: AKAM / LLNW / LVLT

Unlike the Olympics where Limelight (LLNW) is the exclusive provider for video, the NFL games will be streamed by both Limelight AND Akamai (AKAM).

Starting September 4th, the NFL in conjunction with NBC will stream 17 Sunday Night Football games on nfl.com and nbcsports.com. While Limelight had no comment when asked about the recent announcement, I have learned that Limelight and Akamai will be the back end streaming providers working with NBC and the NFL.

By my count, this makes at least five major wins or expanded contracts for Limelight in the past few months.Disney, (DIS) Microsoft (MSFT), Netflix (NFLX), Amazon (AMZN) and now the NFL/NBC. While I don't know the terms of the deal and whether the NFL or NBC will be the paying customer, Limelight is already closely working with NBC for the Olympics. The NFL content is new business for Limelight but for Akamai, falls under an existing contract it already has with NBC.

Many of the newer CDNs on the market have been talking for some time now about how they are only focusing on live delivery and how their "next generation" networks are so much better for live streaming than an Akamai or Limelight. But to date, I have yet to see any recently launched CDN win any of the big contracts for all of the live events that have happened or will soon take place. The Olympics, NCAA March Madness, Presidential Debates, Operation MySpace, Oprah's Online Classes, Democratic National Convention, US Open for golf and tennis and the NFL Sunday Night Games amongst others. Akamai, Limelight and Level 3 (LVLT) combined are responsible for doing the delivery for all of these events.

This reinforces the fact that building out a global CDN to truly scale for large live events and have the required capacity and support pieces in place to handle such events is not as easy as some think it is. Live events are unique in that you get one chance and one chance only to get it right. You can't add capacity after the fact like you can with on-demand delivery. The CDN has to be able to route traffic in real time, monitor and report back on the network to the customer in real time and deal with things like content ingestion, splitting streams across the network and working very closely with those who are capturing and encoding all the signals.

Successfully delivering large scale live events it still not easy and it takes a very focused and disciplined approach to that specific segment of the market to be successful. The idea that any CDN can come along and simply add capacity and be able to handle large scale live events is just not accurate.

      hey,

Short Term Trading Strategies That Work – New Release by Larry Connors
Nov 27, 2008 (10Meters.com via COMTEX) -- LLNW | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Following its recent announcement that it had established a relationship with Limelight Networks to provide a faster, and more robust online storage offering, Mosso, Rackspace's Cloud Hosting Division, announced the release of Cloud Files enabled with Limelight Networks' content delivery service (CDN).

The companies stated that this union brings unlimited online storage, scalable content delivery, and application acceleration services, thereby allowing businesses to more easily and affordably distribute content to millions of end users.

Cloud Files, a scalable online storage service, as well as the relationship with Limelight, was announced last month at the Cloud Event as part of the new suite of Cloud Hosting offerings from Rackspace. In conjunction with Cloud Files, Limelight's robust and proven delivery service helps enable Mosso to quickly deliver files.

"Using Cloud Files for Action Method Online means that we don't ever have to worry about running out of space, or adding expensive hardware. We can allow our users to upload as many files as they like while managing their projects and scale seamlessly with amazing performance," said Chris Henry, Co-CTO, Behance. "And with a CDN leader like Limelight delivering our users' files, we believe we can count not only on reliability but also on the fastest download time out there."

Limelight Networks operates a dedicated optical network that interconnects thousands of servers. This network enables the company to deliver massive files at the speed of light directly into the access networks that consumers use every day. When an end user requests a file, Limelight's network pulls it from the closest Mosso server, caches the content within their geographically distributed network, and serves it up.

"Limelight Networks' global delivery platform provides Mosso with world-class performance, scalability, and efficiency, which can help them ensure that any object stored in the Cloud Files service will reliably and efficiently be delivered to their end-users," said Peter Coppola, vice president, product management, Limelight Networks. "This combination of cost effective, unlimited online storage with Limelight's worldwide distribution platform is truly innovative, and we are proud to work with Mosso and Rackspace to bring this exciting new service to market."

"The Mosso/Limelight relationship brings full-fledged, robust CDN capabilities and unlimited file storage to developers and corporate IT shops alike. We expect Mosso's new CDN capability to greatly enhance the quality of the end user experience by speeding the delivery of bandwidth-heavy rich content, including audio and video," said Emil Sayegh, general manager of Mosso. "For literally pennies per gigabyte of bandwidth and storage and no upfront commitments, the CDN advantage is no longer only available to the giants of the internet. Together with Limelight, we have just democratized content delivery."

Japan-based Dowa Holdings Co. (TSE:5714) said Tuesday that it will purchase a 100 per cent stake in a Southeast Asian waste management company on February 5 through a wholly owned subsidiary.

Modern Asia Environmental Holdings Inc., to be acquired through Dowa Eco-System Co., operates waste management and disposal businesses in Indonesia , Thailand and Singapore.

Through the acquisition, the Dowa Holdings group will gain control of the firm's landfills, incinerators, and solid-waste and waste-oil processing facilities. The deal will also allow the group to expand into the recycling, soil purification and global warming gas reduction businesses in Southeast Asia.

By tapping the growing demand for environmental and recycling services in the region, the group hopes to lift sales at its environmental and recycling division to 110 billion yen (US$1.22584 billion)by fiscal 2011, a 50 per cent increase from the projected sales for the year ending March 31.

Limelight to Akamai: 'My Network Is Bigger Than Your Network'
by: Dan Rayburn January 28, 2009 | about stocks: AKAM / LLNW
      Dan Rayburn

Yesterday, the RSS feed from Limelight's (LLNW) blog showed a new entry with more details on Limelight's network capacity during the Obama inauguration webcast. While both Akamai (AKAM) and Limelight put out stats after the event was over, they each used different metrics in their releases making for an apples to oranges comparison.

Akamai said the total number of simultaneous audio and video streams on their network across all of their customers for that day was 7.7 million. Limelight's release only gave out the total number of simultaneous streams for the webcast, which was 2.5 million. Days later, Akamai broke out for me the total number of simultaneous streams for just the Obama webcast at around 3.8 million. Yesterday, Limelight's blog post says that at the same time Akamai was reporting 7.7 million simultaneous streams for all of their customers, Limelight saw just over 9 million simultaneous streams for all of their customers on their network.

Clearly this is turning into a "my CDN is bigger than your CDN" debate which quite frankly, is impossible to prove for either side. For starters, neither CDN says what the average bit rate was for the simultaneous streams on their networks. If one CDN had more audio streams, or lower bitrate streams, they could deliver more than the other and it would completely skew the numbers.

In addition, network capacity is different than network performance. Lots of folks have capacity, not as many have good performance. We don't have any third party metric to show the performance difference between the two networks during the inauguration webcast.

Limelight's blog post points to a graph by Arbor Networks that shows traffic data from ten U.S. consumer ISP networks which says that Limelight saw an increase of 160% versus Akamai's 17%. Those numbers don't make any sense to me and quite frankly, it's really hard to tell exactly what they mean.

Network scale is important, but I think performance measurement is even more crucial. I guess the CDNs putting out all of these numbers are a start, but still, I think it's nearly impossible to compare any of them apples to apples for the Obama webcast based on such limited data.

Akamai Losing Some Apple Business To Limelight
      Posted by Eric Savitz

Akamai (AKAM) is apparently losing some of Apple’s (AAPL) content delivery business for software updates and the App store to Limelight Networks (LLNW), according to a post by StreamingMedia.com’s Dan Rayburn.

Raymond James analyst Michael Turits points out in a research note that Apple was once more than 10% of Akamai’s revenues, but now is likely closer to 5%. Still, Turits says that the issue “highlights concern we have had regarding commoditization of content delivery and broader loss of wallet share at major Akamai customers.” Turits notes that he previously had viewed Apple as a nearly exclusive Akamai customer, but that most major media customers have been multi-sourcing for some time. He says that Akamai and Limelight have provided nearly equivalent large file delivery capabilities for some time, resulting in steep price declines in 2007 and 2008.

Turits expects Akamai Q4 results to be at the low end of the company’s forecast range of $202 million to $210 million in revenue and profits of 39-41 cents. He has Market Perform ratings on both Akamai and Limelight, “given the continuing, perhaps escalating price war.”

AKAM today is up 5 cents, or 0.4%, to $13.95.

Impossible to Compare Akamai and Limelight's Enterprise and Commerce Products
by: Dan Rayburn April 11, 2009 | about stocks: AKAM / LLNW

Two weeks ago, Limelight Networks (LLNW) launched their new whole site delivery product, branded LimelightSITE, directly targeting the enterprise, finance, retail and government verticals. With this announcement, everyone is asking if this will have any affect on Akamai (AKAM), who to date, has always dominated the enterprise and retail markets with their dynamic site solutions.

In my post about Limelight's new offering, I mentioned that I was going to follow it up with another article that would compare the services from the two companies on a technical level. Not a performance comparison, as that can only be done by customers, but rather an overview of how each service works and what the differences are. After spending a lot of time in the past week with both companies, I've come to the realization that comparing the two services is nearly impossible for multiple reasons.

For starters, the solutions are very different and while there is some overlap, they appear to be targeting different customers with a different feature set. With commerce, Akamai is looking at more than just the transaction and personalization of the site and is also overlaying purchasing data from advertisers' websites to present the most relevant ad to shoppers, hence their Acerno acquisition.

And unlike video, whole site delivery and accelerating apps comes with a host of complex tasks that is a lot harder to compare from one vendor to another. Retail sites are using a lot of RIA apps, dynamic HTML, javascript and components that can't be cached, not to mention the security requirements, specific page loads times demanded by customers and professional services work performed around commerce and enterprise solutions.

While delivering video has its own host of ecosystem pieces, it's a whole lot easier to compare one vendor to another for the delivery of video versus whole site delivery and application acceleration. The only true way to compare both of these services would be for a customer to take part of their site and create a sub domain so that both Akamai and Limelight could deliver similar content from the same site. But even that may be hard to do as Akamai and Limelight really do seem to be targeting different sized customers and more importantly, customers with different needs.

When Limelight launched their product they said they were not expecting to compete with Akamai head on but rather with their customers' own IT departments. While some overlap between the two companies is expected, having spent time with both companies in the past week, their solutions really are quite different. After getting lots of product specific details from both companies, I've come to the realization that doing a fair, apples to apples technical comparison would be nearly impossible.

That said, I think both companies can grow their solutions in the market. Unlike video which was only a $400M market last year, the total content delivery market for all kinds of content is well over a billion dollars and growing rapidly. With Limelight already having over 160 customers for their new offering, it proves that there is room in the market for both Akamai and Limelight with different offerings.

When it comes to the subject of Akamai and their enterprise and commerce customers, I get a lot of questions. Many hear Akamai use terms like "value add services" or "retail solutions" but don't know exactly what that means, what the offering looks like and how it all works. Nowhere on Akamai's website can you even find a product sheet on commerce because as I learned this week, to Akamai, commerce is a market, not a product line. Commerce falls under their dynamic site solutions product line. Since we all know that Akamai's margins on services outside of video delivery are quite healthy and are the products that make Akamai unique in the market, Wall Street always always has a lot of questions.

This is very similar to Akamai's application delivery product which is a term that everyone knows, but rarely do I find anyone who can explain what that means or how it works. That was my reasoning for publishing two articles on Akamai's app delivery offering last year that outline how it works and what it is used for. Taking that same approach, I am already working on doing the same for Akamai's commerce related business detailing how it all works, what the offering looks like and how it is used. I hope to have that follow up post ready sometime next week.

Limelight Networks Inc. has added two new programs to make it easier for content to be streamed to mobile devices, and to have ads connected with that content.

Tempe-based Limelight (Nasdaq:LLNW) launched LimelightReach and LimelightAds to provide more options for content delivery to mobile phones.

LimelightReach will allow the company’s network to detect what type of device is requesting a video or other content, then choose the best format for that system and player.

The device offers companies a way to have all its content based through one Internet link and let the computer select which is appropriate, officials said.

The LimelightAds service allows content providers to incorporate ads into any point in the content stream. That was not possible before without considerable work on the content providers’ part, said Paul Alfieri, a Limelight spokesman.

Customers increasingly have been asking for a way to adapt advertising to specific viewers’ reach, Alfieri said.

“Publishers might want to send specific messages to iPhone users and different ones to BlackBerry users, for example,” he said.

The service also allows the mobile devices to show a user’s location, thus opening up the possibility of location-based advertising, Alfieri said.

The advantage of the new products is they work within the existing content stream and that they will work on all mobile devices, officials said.

Limelight has no customers yet for the services.

How Amazon and Limelight Are Attacking Akamai

      By Tim Beyers
      December 23, 2009 | Comments (4)

There's a lot to like about Akamai Technologies' (Nasdaq: AKAM) business.

We know because competitors are hungering for a slice of its share of the content delivery networking (CDN) market. On Monday, Limelight Networks (Nasdaq: LLNW) spent $110 million in cash and stock to acquire EyeWonder, a service for digitally delivering ads. Akamai's related offering is called Advertising Decision Solutions.

More importantly, Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) last week announced a plan to stream audio and video via its CloudFront CDN. Industry watcher Dan Rayburn describes the threat the new service could be to both Akamai and Limelight in this blog post:

Amazon does have the potential to take many of the mid-sized customers who spend between $3-5k a month on video," Rayburn writes. "That's Amazon's sweet spot and there are a lot of those customers in the market with the major CDNs.

Dan's right. Amazon's entry won't make it easier on Akamai, and EyeWonder makes Limelight a more serious threat. I'd be more worried if Akamai were a static business, but that's not the case.

Akamai recently announced a plan to implement what it calls Web Application Firewall to help stiff-arm digital threats at their source, in the cloud. Neither Limelight nor Level 3 (Nasdaq: LVLT) offers a similar service at the moment. Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO) and perhaps McAfee (NYSE: MFE) are Akamai's closest comparables in this area.

So long as Akamai continues to build its stack of services in this way -- and so long as those services are more desirable than open-source or lower-priced alternatives -- Akamai should continue to flourish.

I've had my say. Now it's your turn. Will these moves by Limelight, Amazon, and others force Akamai from the content delivery spotlight? Please vote in the poll below. You can also weigh in with a comment or two, and benefit a great cause in the process.

Specific highlights for the third quarter included:
