Reale Chance für Wescan Goldfields - Die zweite oldsource 2009?

Wescan Goldfields Inc. was the first public company after Goldsource Mines Inc. to be involved in the recent staking rush following the discovery of significant coal in drill core near Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan. During the later part of April Wescan had applied for an extensive package of coal dispositions covering over 250,000 hectares adjacent to and partially surrounding the coal discovery made by Goldsource Mines. Wescan has received a “Letter of Comfort” from Saskatchewan Energy and Resources on May 27th, 2008 stating that the majority of all coal permit applications made on behalf of the company are ‘first in line’ and will be given priority sequence.

Wescan Goldfields Inc. has been able to acquire a significant, well-positioned block of land within the area of the coal discovery by Goldsource Mines near Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan. Wescan has received an initial package of 83 coal permit certificates from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Energy and Resources. These permits are adjacent to the claim block hosting the major coal discovery previously announced by Goldsource. The permits allow Wescan to aggressively explore the area for coal and cover a period of one year with two possible six-month extensions and convertible to a 15-year lease.

A balance of 268 priority sequenced ("first in line") coal applications listed in Letters of Comfort from Saskatchewan Energy and Resources remain to be issued.

Exploration permitting with Saskatchewan Environment is in progress with an initial program proposal submitted to that department. This primary drilling will focus on Wescan’s southeasterly permits, located adjacent to Goldsource and proximal to their recent drilling activity.

EPCOR and Siemens partner to design near-zero emission coal fueled power facility
      Source: newswire

EDMONTON, Aug. 15 /CNW/ - A three-year initiative to design andengineer Canada's first near-zero emission thermal power plant reacheda milestone today when EPCOR Utilities Inc. (EPCOR) selected SiemensFuel Gasification Technology GmbH & Co. KG (Siemens) as thetechnology provider for the design of a coal gasification facility.
The selection is the latest step in the EPCOR-led Front End Engineeringand Design (FEED) of an Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC)technology power plant that could deliver improved air quality andcapture carbon emissions for permanent storage.
Siemens will licence its SFG-500 coal gasifier technology to the FEEDproject. If subsequent investment and construction decisions go asplanned, a 270-megawatt (net) generating station using the newtechnology would be targeted to commence operations in 2015.
"Today's agreement is a significant milestone in EPCOR's quest to takecarbon capture and storage technologies from opportunity to operation,"said EPCOR Senior Vice President, Dr. David Lewin. "This Genesee IGCCproject alone has the potential to capture more than one and a quartermillion tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year, which would make asignificant contribution towards provincial and federal targets whileproviding a reliable source of baseload power generation."
Siemens has operated its gasification technologies for more than20 years, using a wide variety of energy sources as feedstocks for theconversion process. In 2007, as part of the FEED study, 18 tonnes ofcoal from Genesee were shipped to Siemens Gasification Test Centre inFreiberg, Germany for performance testing.
"While we have secured a number of orders for our coal gasificationtechnology in China, the U.S. and Australia, we are pleased to have ourfirst order in Canada," said Michael Suess, CEO of the Fossil PowerGeneration Division of Siemens Energy. "This is the first time ourgasifier technology will be used for a full-scale IGCC project. In thefuture IGCC power plants could make a significant contribution towardmore reliable energy supply with maximized climate and environmentalcompatibility."
The Alberta Energy Research Institute, Natural Resources Canada andEPCOR have each contributed $11 million to the $33 million FEEDproject, which is located at EPCOR's Genesee Generating Station, 70kilometres southwest of Edmonton, Alberta. The FEED project is beingconducted in conjunction with the Canadian Clean Power Coalition, whichis chaired by Dr. David Lewin.
In October 2007 the Genesee FEED study became the first project to besupported by the federal government's ecoENERGY Technology Initiative.
"Canada's fossil fuel resources are one of our country's biggesteconomic drivers, and our government is committed to developing cleanerways to produce and use those resources," said the Honourable GaryLunn, Minister of Natural Resources. "This project is an example of howour investments are advancing the technologies required to produce anduse energy in ways that protect the health of both our environment andCanadians."
The FEED project is currently in its second phase, which is scheduledfor completion in 2009. Following completion of the technology designwork and financing decisions, EPCOR can enter into an agreement withSiemens to supply the gasification reactor and system components.
"This project is another demonstration of how government-industrypartnerships are advancing Alberta's Climate Change Plan," said DougHorner, Minister of Advanced Education and Technology. "Carbon captureand storage is an important strategy in reducing greenhouse gasemissions and this technology strengthens Alberta's position as aglobal leader in sustainable energy development."
EPCOR is preparing an Expression of Interest for the Genesee IGCCproject, seeking to qualify under the Province of Alberta's $2 billionprogram for large-scale carbon capture and storage projects.

EPCOR Utilities Inc. builds, owns and operates power plants, electricaltransmission and distribution networks, water and wastewater treatmentfacilities and infrastructure in Canada and the United States. EPCORhas been named one of Canada's Top 100 employers for eight consecutiveyears, and one of only 10 companies to be selected as Canada's MostEarth-Friendly Employers. EPCOR is headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta.EPCOR's website is www.epcor.ca.

      Winter is coming!

As coal exports increase, so do prices
Analyst sees $240/ton coal next year
      -- Purchasing, 8/20/2008 1:02:00 PM
A torrid global market is squeezing domestic supply of high-grade coal as mining companies divert shipments to countries willing to pay much higher prices. That’s why U.S. coal exports should jump 39% in 2008 to 82 million tons, Stifel Nicolaus analyst Paul Forward tells the USA Today newspaper, even though prices for Appalachian coal have jumped from $46/ton last August to $140 this month,

If the shortage persists into next year, as expected, Seth Schwartz, a principal at consulting firm Energy Ventures Analysis in Arlington, Va., says customers will face another steep price increase — up to 70% to around $240/ton.

U.S. market supplies are tight because most of the exports are from Eastern mines, such as those in the Appalachians, which sell coal with higher energy content and are closer to Gulf of Mexico ports. Another 40% of U.S. production is from the more productive Powder River Basin, where per-ton prices are far lower--at about $13/ton--due to the coal's lower energy content. Also, coal there can be extracted more easily from seams as thick as 100 feet vs. typical 3-foot seams in Appalachia.

Yet even Powder River coal is riding the export wave, with some heading to Europe and Asia and prices up 50% since last year. The supply crunch is delaying shipments, forcing utilities to scramble to keep coal-fired plants running. That’s why some companies, such as Peabody Coal, are sending a growing portion of the region's coal to Eastern utilities to replace foreign-bound Appalachian coal.
