      Infosys will keine Mitarbeiter entlassen:

CHENNAI: IT major Infosys has no plans to lay off its employees and is going ahead with placement of all the 18,000 candidates who were extended
      Jobs.

"No, we do not have any plans," Infosys Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Kris S Gopalakrishnan told reporters here when asked whether the company had any plans to lay off as a result of the economic meltdown.

Gopalakrishnan said the company would continue to honour the job offers it had made in the past. "We have made 18,000 job offers in the past (year) and by July this year, the new candidates would start joining," he said.

He said the company had decided to extend the training period from the current 3.5 months to 4.5 months.

"We have extended it by adding another four weeks to it as there is adequate time available and utilisation level is also low," he said.

He said they were implementing the new time duration for the existing new recruits as well.

Asked about the US Government's decision on restriction of H1B visas and the stimulus packages, he said, "Right now, I see there is no impact. One has to wait and see before coming into any conclusion," he said.

On the industry's down trend, Gopalakrishnan predicted that the it would improve within the next four years.

"Currently the environment is challenging as the industry estimates 30 per cent downtrend" he said.

Speaking about industry's expectations on the interim budget, he said it expected tax incentive given for Software Technology Parks 'to be continued' at least for smaller companies.

He suggested that the government should bring more clarity and streamlining of rules on SEZs and should also take adequate steps to improve the current situation.

To a query on acquiring some of scam-hit Satyam Computers clients, he said that some of its clients had approached Infosys (for acquisition). He, however declined to elaborate.

NEW DELHI: Amid continuing decline in stock markets, all-weather investment option gold zoomed past all previous records today to set a record
price of Rs 15,420 per 10 gram in the national capital.

The metal surged by Rs 560, the biggest single-day rise in over one-year today in tune with rates in the global markets where gold rallied above 960 dollar an ounce.

Dealers said melting stocks and forex markets left no other option for investors other than gold and they rushed park their funds in bullion.

There was frantic buying by stockists and speculators on firming trend on the global front amid a plunge in equity markets, they added. Analysts had forecast that gold may touch Rs 16,000 per ten gram in short-term.

The steep rise in prices, however, brought gloom to retail buyers particularly in the ongoing wedding season. A retail jeweller in Delhi said many prospective customers were postponing their buying decision as they are unable to grapple with with never-before like prices.

"Retail buyers postponed their decisions to buy for the current marriage season in view of the sky-rocketing gold prices," said All India Sarafa ( bullion) president Sheel Chand Jain, adding the surge was solely of speculative nature.

      2009 wird für Indien "schmerzhaft"

'2009 to be most painful for Indian economy'

      February 18, 2009

      Text: Prasanna D Zore

2009 is likely to be the most painful year for the Indian economy, prophesies Madhabi Puri-Buch, managing director and chief executive officer of ICICI Securities. However, she is optimistic that the two fiscal stimulus packages announced by the Indian government will have a positive impact on the economy, the results of which will surface in 2010.

In a freewheeling interview with rediff.com soon after she took over the reins at ICICI Securities, Madhabi Puri-Buch discussed the current economic scenario, the impact of recession on India, the reasons behind foreign institutional investors not finding India attractive anymore, and the solution to the housing problem in India in the backdrop of rising real estate prices and interest rates showing some degree of volatility.

What's your assessment of the current economic scenario? Everybody's talking about recession. Are we slowly slipping into a recession?

There is actually no doubt about it. The numbers (GDP) have come in. Almost all the economies across the world are showing negative growth and it certainly is a full-fledged recession. I don't think there is any doubt about that anymore.

The expectation is that perhaps in calendar year 2010 we will feel the positive impact of fiscal stimuli doses injected by various nations on the global economy. But at the same time there is worry that while growth will come back there could also be a significant impact on inflation and interest rates. If this happens simultaneously it could be a really difficult period.

However, in India we are fortunate that a large part of our growth comes from domestic demand. Agri sector has done well -- the rabi crop sowing is over now and is expected to be much better than the previous kharif crop as well as much better than the previous rabi crop. So we expect agri sector to grow well.

Manufacturing, perhaps, may see a little bit of a problem. Overall, the general consensus is we will close this year at 7 per cent (GDP growth) and next year possibly in the region of 4 to 5 per cent. [/pre]

Indische Banken machten 2008 fette Gewinne

NEW DELHI: The period of slowdown is proving to be a good time for the commercial banks as most of them have reaped in a good business and
      Banks
minted money all through this downturn. A government estimate says that between April and December 2008 the commercial banks operating in the country have earned a combined net profit of Rs 36,500 crore as against Rs 28,900 crore in the same period in the previous year, a gain of 25.6%.

The rise in profit is a result of increased business as well as higher interest income. Interestingly , private and foreign banks — which have refused to bring down the interest rates despite the RBI slashing its key lending rates to banks by 3.5% — have had higher profit margins than their PSU counterparts.

To help commercial banks get easy and cheap credit in the face of the global financial meltdown, the central bank had reduced the repo rate at which it lends to banks from a peak of 9% on August 30 last year to 5.5% at present. However , the easing liquidity scenario did not reflect in consumers or industry getting the benefit of lower interest rates.

A bank-wise statement of profits earned by these banks, tabled in Parliament on Thursday , reveals that while the profits of PSU banks in December 2008 were 21% higher than in the same period in 2007, in the case of private and foreign banks the jump was 26% and 35%. Individually, the growth in profits of each bank ranges between 21% and 86%, while some have even registered a negative growth

Die 1,5 Millionen Inder in den USA haben die beste Ausbildung und werden am besten bezahlt...

WASHINGTON: The 1.5 million Indian Americans in the US continue to top the US Census charts as the best-educated, highest-paid and top-placed community among the 38.1 million foreign-born population in the country.

As per a fresh analysis of data on the foreign-born population from the 2007 American Community Survey, 74 percent of Indian-born US residents had bachelor's degree or higher, which was far more than the figure for people born in any other foreign country.

This was also nearly three times the 27 percent of the foreign-born and about 28 percent of the natives having bachelor's degrees, showed the new analysis that was released by the US Census Bureau of the Commerce Department.

These figures come from the new detailed characteristic profiles on the foreign-born population, or people who were not US citizens at birth, available on the basis of their countries of birth.

"Among the foreign-born, those from India, Australia, South Africa and the Philippines have the highest median household incomes," said the analysis, indicating the top positions Indian enjoy among the US workforce.

Ab Oktober 2009 wird die indische Wirtschaft wieder wachsen

NEW DELHI: India's economic downturn is "temporary" and the upturn will begin from October as the country's economy and business are resilient
enough to adapt to the changing times of global meltdown, said Home Minister P Chidamabaram on Tuesday.

"India stood out as a shining example of resilient economy and we owe this to the resilience of the Indian businesses and Indian economy, which quickly adjusted to the changing times. This (meltdown) is a temporary phase," said Chidambaram while giving away the annual National Tourism Awards.

"By the beginning of 2009-2010 and beginning October 2009, we will find an upturn in economy," he added.

Addressing trade and travel representatives, he said there has been a "degree of uncertainty" in their minds, as he urged them to take a "balanced view of things".

He said every day of 2008 brought bad news for the developing countries facing the global meltdown, but India saw a growth rate of 7.1 per cent due to domestic demand.

"In no other country, I have seen businessmen adjusting so rapidly and that is why we were able to hold our head high. I am sure this quality will steer the industry in 2009. Insha Allah, the growth rate of Indian economy will go over 7 per cent," the minister said.

The former finance minister also advised companies to cut prices to weather the downturn.

"They should not be hesitant in cutting prices. It is more important to remain in business and retain clientele. Cutting prices is also better than losing loyal employees and business. Cut prices and the results would be visible."

Chidambaram said India is an attractive destination and no country in the world offers so much variety. While in 2008 about 5.37 million tourists visited the country, it was 5.07 million in 2007. [/pre]

MUMBAI: Larsen & Toubro, India’s largest engineering company, on Tuesday said it has got three new orders worth Rs 1,438 crore. Two orders

      Dr Reddy's trims non-US operations
25 Feb 2009, 0000 hrs IST, Nina Mehta, ET Bureau

MUMBAI: Pharma major, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories (DRL) is understood to be scaling back its non-US global operations. The company is trimming
operations in many CIS countries, in the Middle East and Africa.

In fact, DRL will shut down its operations in China, officials said. The move is being attributed to the global meltdown and recessionary trends in these markets.

When contacted a DRL spokesperson said, “As part of our strategy, we continue to review our presence in various geographies based on the opportunities and attractiveness of those markets. Accordingly, we align our resources to meet our strategic priorities. Any decision, of consolidation or otherwise, and the timing of it is made at the appropriate time.”

The North American market comprises 41% of DRL’s turnover, while the European Union contributes 23%. The domestic market accounts for 13%, while Russia and CIS countries comprise 11% each, and the rest of the world, which includes the Middle East and Africa, make up for the remaining 12%. The company’s consolidated turnover for FY07-08 was Rs 5,000.6 crore.

Scaling back and shutting down operations in these markets will cost them a significant 23% of their turnover. The falling value of currencies in these regions could be another reason why these markets are losing favour with Indian pharma companies, say industry observers.

“The local currency in CIS region has depreciated significantly. Also rating agencies have downgraded the entire region. Problems with regards to receivable can crop up due to this downgrade so most companies are restricting their exposure in this area,” Alok Dalal, research analyst with Religare Research, said.

Another analyst said that since Dr Reddy’s US business is not doing well, they need to rationalise costs in markets which are less profitable than the US. “So when US does bad, places like these become unviable from a business perspective,” the analyst said.

The company is also facing pressure in Germany where it has to adjust itself to the price eroding tender-model and start showing profitable growth. The lack of significant product launches, intense pricing pressure in the generics market and declining revenues from Mexico CPS and betapharm businesses are just some of the issues that DRL is facing.

DRL had recorded a 49% spurt in last quarter revenues due to the exclusivity it enjoyed from authorised 100mg generic version of GlaxoSmithKline’s drug Imitrex (an anti-migraine drug).

The drug contributed to more than half of the company’s topline increase. However, DRL will now have to share the market with Ranbaxy which now shares the Imtrex market in the US. Consequently, DRL’s revenues from this segment are expected to fall.

In the December 2008 quarter, the company earned Rs 364 crore from sales of Imitrex. With more competition and prices expected to fall sharply DRL could also lose some share. Analysts estimate the annual market for the 100mg dosage at $630 million.
