DelSolar obtains US$120 million loan for establishing solar cell capacity in China

Posted by Debasish Choudhury on 17 February 2009 at 07:40

DelSolar, a Taiwan-based maker of crystalline silicon solar cells, on February 16 signed with four local banks and the Development Bank of Singapore for a 5-year syndicated loan of US$120 million (NT$4 billion), with the funds earmarked for setting up an annual production capacity of 240MWp at its factory in Wujiang, eastern China, by the end of 2009, the company said in a press release.

DelSolar currently has existing annual production capacity of 120MWp in northern Taiwan.

DelSolar has succeeded in hiking average energy conversion rates from 17.5% to 18.3% for monocrystalline silicon solar cells and from 15.8% to 16.6% for the polycrystalline type, with such new solar cell models to come into volume production in July 2009, the company pointed out.

The total annual production capacity for solar cells of high energy conversion rates will increase to 120MWp by the end of 2009, DelSolar indicated. The total output for all types of solar cells in 2009 is expected to reach 120MWp, rising by 50% from 2008, DelSolar noted.

Of DelSolar's demand for solar grade crystalline silicon wafers in 2009, less than 50% will be met by supply contracts while the remaining will rely on spot market supply, the company noted. Currently, contract manufacturing accounts for 25% of the company's total solar cell order volume, DelSolar pointed out.

Nuying Huang, Taipei; Adam Hwang, DIGITIMES [Tuesday 30 June 2009]

Taiwan-based solar cell maker DelSolar will expand its domestic production capacity by setting up a new factory with a planned annual capacity of 700MWp in 2010, while its construction of a factory with 240MWp annual capacity in eastern China is still under way, according to the company.

The site of DelSolar's new factory belongs to the government-run Hsinchu Science Park (HSP) and was originally leased to another Taiwan-based solar cell maker Gintech Energy for a project to house a capacity of 840MWp, according to industry sources. Gintech originally planned to start construction in October 2008 but finally gave up the project, the sources said, adding that the land was then leased to DelSolar.

DelSolar secures 133 million euro silicon wafer supply

Nuying Huang, Taipei; Esther Lam, DIGITIMES [Thursday 14 February 2008]

DelSolar has inked a deal for silicon wafer supply worth 133 million euro (US$194 million) from an Europe-based supplier. The agreement will run between 2009 to 2015, according to a company filing with the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TSE).

The Delta Electronics-subsidiary said the orders will help stabilize the company's materials supply and fuel sales growth. The contract will be effective from January 1, 2009 through December 31, 2015. Although the company did not reveal details of the supplier, industry sources said REC Solar, Wacker and Solarworld are some of the possible suppliers, given that most Taiwan-based solar cell makers land their materials from them.

DelSolar plans for an annual capacity of 100MWp in 2008. Since the company is relatively cautious over its material supply, its expansion pace lags behind rivals including E-Ton Solar, Motech Industries and Gintech Energy, industry players noted.

As the solar industry generally expect 2009 and 2010 to mark a new page for material sufficiency as many upstream material suppliers are to have their fresh capacity come onboard during the period, companies making preparations to look for materials beyond 2009, the industry players observed.

Among the major solar cell makers in Taiwan, Motech has secured a 10-year long, NT$1.84 billion (US$577.2 million) contract with Wacker from 2009. Meanwhile, Green Energy Technology will have a new batch of materials come into availability in 2009.

Hsinchu, Taiwan: DelSolar Announces Legal Action to Resolve Contractual Dispute with Swiss Wafers AG

After multiple attempts to negotiate, DelSolar and Swiss Wafers AG have been unable to reach any settlement in their dispute arising out of what DelSolar says is Swiss Wafers’ contractual breach.

DelSolar has commenced debt enforcement proceeding against Swiss Wafers in Switzerland.

DelSolar indicates that DelSolar entered into a supply agreement with Swiss Wafers in 2007. DelSolar says Swiss Wafers failed to meet any of DelSolar’s monthly purchase orders since July 2008.

DelSolar has sought to resolve this matter with Swiss Wafers through friendly negotiation and made good faith efforts to that end. During the course of this lengthy negotiation, DelSolar says that Swiss Wafers’ unresponsiveness and evasiveness clearly indicated that it had no genuine intention to remedy damages and losses suffered by DelSolar.

Therefore, to protect the rights of its shareholders and the best interest of DelSolar, DelSolar decided to commence the said debt enforcement proceeding.

DelSolar and IBM to jointly develop CZTS solar cell technology

Press release, September 27; Willie Teng, DIGITIMES [Tuesday 28 September 2010]

Taiwan-based DelSolar announced today that it has signed an agreement to jointly develop copper zinc tin sulfur selenide (CZTS) thin film solar cells with IBM.

"This agreement is a significant step in the progress of our effort to create efficient solar cells using earth abundant materials with novel processes" said TC Chen, vice president of Science and Technology IBM Research. "We already have an excellent collaboration with Tokyo Ohka Kogyo (TOK) for developing manufacturing tooling and the chemistries required for this technology. Recently IBM demonstrated record solar cell efficiencies using a copper zinc tin sulfur selenide material. This new collaboration between DelSolar, TOK, and IBM now puts us firmly on the path to commercially viable technologies and processes for solar cells that could bring us closer to grid parity."

With the benefit of non-toxic and earth-abundant components, CZTS offers the benefits of broader spectrum sensitivity, lower working irradiance, broader temperature latitude and higher net power output. The light absorbing properties can also be fine-tuned by modifying the composition of the photovoltaic conversion layers. Light in weight, the new cell will also be flexible when used with a flexible base material.

Thin film solar cell technologies have been based earlier upon amorphous silicon, CdTe, and CIGS. This new technology is based upon inexpensive, earth abundant components, thereby circumventing the need for cadmium which is toxic, or materials whose availability may be questionable for the large volume growths anticipated in the future (indium or tellurium).

Until now, DelSolar has not engaged in thin film solar cell manufacturing partly because most of the commercially available technologies are of low efficiency or contain expensive materials or elements of limited projected availability. In addition, most of the current compound thin film solar cells on the market still use cadmium as the photovoltaic conversion layer or buffer layer.

Furthermore, the net loss from the first half of 2011 has already surpassed the net profits of 2010, which were NT$435 million.

According to industry sources, the solar market suffered in the second quarter due to weak demand. Market watchers predict most Taiwan-based solar cell companies that will release their financial performance for first half of 2011 are likely to post net losses. The net losses from the second quarter are likely to erode the net profits from first quarter, or even from 2010 for some solar cell makers, added industry sources.

There have been fluctuations in the solar market. Negative impacts have been mostly centered on the solar cell segment due to continuous and large capacity expansions undertaken by the firms. Only mono-crystalline silicon solar products have been able to fight against the current. However, if mono-crystalline silicon solar product makers cannot effectively cut down material costs, gross margins might be subdued.

Taiwan-based solar cell makers are Motech, Gintech, Neo Solar Power, Solartech, and E-Ton.

DelSolar, the solar subsidiary of Delta Electronics, debuted on Taiwan Stock Exchange (TSE) with IPO of NT$14.7 (US$0.50) on May 9, 2012.

Despite the continuous low price of solar cells, DelSolar remains positive on the future of the market. The firm noted that demand for renewable energy sources is increasing as various countries have been raising awareness of the risks in using nuclear power plants.

DelSolar indicated 2012 capex to be used for optimization of equipment and process. The firm has been striving to lower operation costs to increase competitiveness.

DelSolar mainly produces solar cells and has been able to increase efficiency of mono-crystalline solar cells to 19.1%. DelSolar's current capacity of 600MW for solar cells and 180MW for solar modules.

In addition to silicon-based solar products, DelSolar has been cooperating with IBM on R&D of second-generation thin-film solar cells such as copper zinc tin sulfide (CZTS).
