Taiwan's solar wafer maker breaks even in March

Posted by Debasish Choudhury on 13 April 2009 at 12:20

Danen Technology, a Taiwan-based maker of solar-grade poly-Si ingots and wafers, broke even in March for the first time since starting volume production in 2008, according to company president James Fang.

Danen has an annual capacity equivalent to 60MWp currently, with clients in Germany, South Korea and the US as reported by Digitimes from Taiwan.

If market conditions turns stable in the second quarter of 2009, Danen plans to expand the capcity to 120MWp, Fang indicated.

Taiwan's Danen Technology to expand solar ingot capacity

Posted by Debasish Choudhury on 13 August 2009 at 14:18

Danen Technology will expand its annual ingot slicing capacity from 35MWp to 50-60MWp at the end of 2009. Ingot growing capacity will also expand from 60MWp to 120MWp in the first half of 2010, according to president James Fang.

Current capacity reached full utilization in June 2009 and will be fully occupied until at least September, Fang pointed out, adding that Danen has received orders with shipments slated through until November.

Danen will begin to procure new growing furnaces in October with installation to be completed in first-half 2010, Fang said.

Danen's clients are mainly solar cell makers in Taiwan, China and Europe, Fang noted. Energy conversion rates for poly-Si solar cells made form Danen's wafers have risen from 15.6% to over 16%, Fang added.

Solar wafer maker Danen expects to swing to profitability in 2H09

Nuying Huang, Taipei; Adam Hwang, DIGITIMES [Friday 9 October 2009]

Danen Technology, a Taiwan-based maker of solar-grade poly-Si ingots and wafers, expects to turn its business operations from a net loss of NT$80-90 million (US$2.4-2.7 million) in the first half of 2009 to net profits of an estimated NT$40-45 million in the second half, according to company president James Fang.

With production capacity running at full utilization since July, Danen reached gross margins of 10-11% during the third quarter and has received orders with shipments scheduled for December, Fang pointed out. Therefore, Danen will expand its annual capacity for poly-Si ingots from 60MWp in equivalent currently to 72MWp at the end of 2009, and further to 200MWp by the end of 2010, Fang indicated. Ingot slicing capacity will also be expanded accordingly, Fang noted.

Taiwan-based solar ingot and wafer supplier Danen Technology saw record revenues of NT$133 million (US$4.1 million) in October and expects its fourth-quarter revenues to also reach an all-time high, according to company president James Fang.

Danen has fully utilized its capacity for polysilicon (poly-Si) ingots and will expand the capacity from 120MWp currently to 500MWp in 2010, Fang said. In order to fund the expansion, Danen has obtained a 3-year syndicated loan of NT$435 million (US$13.4 million) and will also raise paid-in capital by NT$480 million by issuing 15 million new shares at NT$32 per share, Fang indicated.

Danen is capable of slicing ingots into wafers as thin as 180 microns, and the wafers can be used to make solar cells with an average conversion rate of over 16%, Fang said, adding Danen is aiming to upgrade the wafer to enable a conversion rate of 16.5% at the end of 2009 and 17% in 2010.

Solar wafer maker Danen to expand capacity to 210MWp by end of 2010

Nuying Huang, Taipei; Willie Teng, DIGITIMES [Wednesday 14 July 2010]

Solar-grade wafer producer Danen Technology will expand capacity from 120MWp currently to 210MWp by the end of 2010 and 300MWp in the first half of 2011, according to the company.

The Taiwan-based company is expecting to complete its second wafer plant in September 2010 with initial capacity of 90MWp and up to 400MWp eventually, the company said. The new facility reportedly will be equipped with 600kg crystal growth furnaces from a German equipment provider.

Danen posted the highest gross margin in the first quarter of 2010 among Taiwan's solar-themed stocks at 23.2%, and expects similar margins for the second quarter. It is currently seeing orders in excess of capacity by 40-50%.

Solar wafer prices will fall 10-15% to an average of US$2.97-3.14 in the 2011, the company projected, adding that the shortage for high-quality solar wafers will persist.

Solar wafer maker Danen inks 7-year poly-Si supply agreement with OCI

Nuying Huang, Taipei; Willie Teng, DIGITIMES [Wednesday 16 March 2011]

Solar wafer maker Danen Technology on March 15 announced that it has signed a seven-year polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) supply agreement with South Korea's OCI. The contract will last from 2012 to 2018 and is worth US$161 million in procurement value. Danen has mostly depended on the spot market in the past, and is not looking to increase the proportion of contract transactions.

Compared with Sino-American Silicon Products (SAS) and Green Energy Technology (GET), Danen is a relative latecomer to the solar wafer sector, and was fortunate to avoid signing high-price poly-Si supply contracts prior to 2009, which has helped its gross margins.

Danen will issue 36.8 million new shares at NT$59 (US$1.99) a share. The payment period began in March 15. Due to the Japan earthquake, Danen's stock price fell to NT$58.

Danen's 2010 revenues were NT$3.61 billion, gross margin was 221.15%, pre-tax profit came to NT$479 million and net EPS totaled NT$3.16.

In related news, solar cell maker Motech Industries reported EPS of NT$12.3 for 2010 on 20% gross margin. However, with results of new subsidiaries Motech Americas and Itogumi Motech now consolidated and operational expansion, the company's operating expenditures rose 168% from 2009.
