Rest von Areva heißt jetzt Orano.
Egal - am Ende ist's immer die EDF.

"Ohio Millennials: We Need Advanced Reactors

Movement for thriving U.S. nuclear industry continues in cities across America
More young voices turn up volume in Ohio to save operating reactors
Innovative storytelling, partnerships necessary for advanced reactors to succeed

Jan. 25, 2018—“What if we had energy with no negatives? Clean, no carbon, practically no waste, and abundant. Well, that’s what we’re looking at.”

That is the vision of eGeneration Executive Chairman Bill Thesling, an experienced “serial entrepreneur” now working on the development of liquid core molten salt reactors (LCMSRs). Thesling joined an expert panel last Thursday for a local gathering of the Millennial Nuclear Caucus in Columbus, Ohio, hosted by U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy and the Michigan-Ohio Section of the American Nuclear Society.

More than 70 participants came together at the Riffe Center Studio Theaters to hear from DOE officials, industry experts, grassroots advocates and thought leaders from The Ohio State University. Advocates in the audience included Ohio state representatives and represented a wide range of the nuclear energy field, from young leaders operating nuclear reactors to those designing advanced nuclear technologies. The panel discussion was followed by a “Nuclear Reimagined” art reception featuring sketches and renderings of what the future of nuclear energy could look like.

This was the second in a series of caucuses that will be held around the country. The inaugural Millennial Nuclear Caucus in Washington, D.C., cosponsored by DOE and NEI, was held last October. Each of these events connects the next generation of leaders in nuclear innovation with environmental, economic and scientific experts in industry and government.

DOE Office of Nuclear Energy Chief of Staff and Senior Advisor Suzie Jaworowski opened last week’s caucus.

“Electricity is definitely an undervalued commodity that really is the platform for our whole culture and our society in the United States and around the world,” she said. “So I think that it’s something that we often take for granted and forget about, but we want to be able to raise the awareness of where that comes from and what makes up a diverse and resilient and clean energy resource.”

Panelists discussed the numerous benefits of nuclear energy—carbon-free electricity, grid resiliency, high-paying jobs, price stability—and the consequences of letting these irreplaceable assets disappear.

“The current fleet is an economic driver. It’s helping ensure our energy security, our national security. The expertise that we have because of the nuclear industry has important implications around the world. And the world is moving towards nuclear,” Senior Advisor to the DOE Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy Bradley Williams said. “Simply put, if we let the industry die and the current plants close, we won’t have people or knowledge or a supply chain or a regulatory body to move forward the next generation of nuclear technologies.”

“Our belief is energy can solve most any problem facing the world today. I’ll give you an example: You think we need water? We can desalinate it. It’s an energy problem,” Thesling added.

“When someone comes to you and says, ‘Why should I care about nuclear?,’ have an answer for them. A good place to start is by telling them why you care about nuclear,” Generation Atomic Cofounder and Managing Director Tay Stevenson said.

Ohio State Representative Dick Stein was in the audience, and urged those invested in the success of nuclear to join together to create a national ad campaign. “To me the biggest issue here is messaging and … how you get that message out.”

Social media played a large role in engaging supporters throughout the event, with NEI leading discussion with attendees and stakeholders via Twitter using the hashtag #nuclearvisionary.

The next Millennial Nuclear Caucus will take place at Texas A&M University in College Station on Feb. 20. Jaworowski emphasized the recent momentum for nuclear innovation as a reason to continue holding these events.

“I felt that there was an opportunity that nuclear had to tell its story right now. And it’s a unique time in history.”"

"Yesterday Lightbridge (NASDAQ: LTBR), which is developing an exciting metallic nuclear fuel rod that can both increase reactor output and improve the safety of today’s light water reactor fleet, formally signed onto a joint venture with one of the world’s largest nuclear companies, Framatome (formerly Areva NP). This alliance—called Enfission—will combine Lightbridge’s innovative new technology with the Framatome’s know-how in commercializing and licensing nuclear fuel to bring a truly innovative new product to market over the next few years—a product that can significantly change the economics and of both new and existing plants. Lightbridge CEO Seth Grae said during a January 25 joint venture announcement at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. that a “key advantage” of the company’s fuel is that it will help power reactor licensees operate units at costs comparable to or lower than natural gas- or coal-fired generators, as well as wind and solar generation.”

The joint venture signing was an exciting event, chaired by our very own blog author Amy Roma! A video of the statements made at the joint venture signing can be found here. Speakers included the leaders of Lightbridge, Framatome, the Nuclear Energy Institute, and Senator John Warner (Ret). Senator Warner was also the Secretary of the Navy during the time of Admiral Rickover (the oft-known “father” of the US nuclear industry), and the two of them worked closely together to make today’s modern nuclear navy a reality.

The advanced nuclear fuel technology would work in existing and new nuclear reactors, improving their economics by increasing power output and enabling longer fuel cycles. The fuel’s innovative fuel design is markedly safer than the fuel currently used in reactors. Notably, the design could result in:

10 percent power uprate and increase time between refueling outages for existing reactors.
30 percent power uprate without increasing time between refueling outages for new reactors.

Under the 10 percent power uprate model, a customer with an 1100 MWe nuclear reactor would see an estimated annual gross economic benefit of about US$60 million.

The fuel would dramatically improve reactor safety. It is more accident tolerant and safer than current fuel because it:

      Reduces fuel operating temperature.
      Does not generate hydrogen gas.
Buys more time to restore active cooling during accidents.
Improves proliferation resistance of used fuel.
Enhances structural integrity of the fuel.

This alliance also showcases the potential for transformative change that can occur when innovative nuclear start-ups team with established experts—something we have blogged about in the past.

Shortly after the signing the CEO of Lightbridge Seth Grae gave a full-throated defense of nuclear power on Fox Business’s Varney and Company, and turned Stuart Varney from a skeptic to a supporter of nuclear power in 3 minutes! Watch the video here to see the dramatic transformation, and the potential next-generation nuclear technologies have to change the public perception of nuclear."
