LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- The highly coveted win by Rio de Janeiro to host the Summer Olympics in 2016 opens up a broad range of investment plays in Brazil, a market that's already surged this year on bets that the country's economic recovery will outshine many others, analysts say.
Preparations to welcome and act as home to thousands of athletes and spectators over the games' two-week stretch will mean nearly every sector that's tracked by local and international investors stands to benefit in some way from Brazil's massive undertaking -- which could bring in as much as $51 billion in new investments, by some estimates.
Steel companies, mobile-phone carriers, airline operators and media companies are expected to capture some of these Olympics-related outlays. Even a home builder that may get tapped to help construct the Olympics village could gain, analysts say.
"What you need is better roads, better hotels, better communications-infrastructure, food services," said Jack Dzierwa, a strategist at U.S. Global Investors, in a telephone interview. "You're not just building stadiums; you need to support these stadiums. It's an all-encompassing project."
Steel maker Gerdau SA /quotes/comstock/13*!ggb/quotes/nls/ggb (GGB 15.02, +0.13, +0.87%) was named by Dzierwa and Credit Suisse as among the top beneficiaries from infrastructure-related business.
Gerdau's São Paulo-listed shares have surged about 68% in 2009, contributing to the 67% surge in Brazil's Bovespa equity index. The iShares MSCI Brazil Index fund /quotes/comstock/13*!ewz/quotes/nls/ewz (EWZ 72.12, +0.43, +0.60%) , an exchange-traded fund that tracks the broader Brazilian market, has shot up 99%.
Rio, best known for its colorful Carnaval celebrations and its famed Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, last week bested bids from Chicago, Madrid and Tokyo to become the first city in South America to host the Olympics.
The impact of the Olympics will reach beyond the games' run in August, as host regions generally enjoy the results of urban development and increased media exposure, Credit Suisse wrote in a note this week.
Investors will bring roughly 30 billion reals ($17.01 billion) in new spending over the next seven years, according to figures from Brazil's organizational committee that were cited by Credit Suisse. The broker also noted Brazil's Ministry of Sports, in a preliminary estimate, has said the event could bring in up to 90 billion reals ($51.27 billion), including indirect investments and its long-term impacts.
Rio's ability to beat three venues in developed markets is a "very positive signal for Brazil" and for global emerging markets as a whole, wrote Citigroup's Latin American equity strategist Geoffrey Dennis in a note last week.
"It is more evidence that Brazil has arrived as a strong power on the global economic (as well as sporting) scene," he said.
The economy will be boosted by higher infrastructure spending as airports and existing stadiums are renovated, some new stadiums are built and other transportation projects "come to fruition," according to Dennis.
Pillows, planes and trains
Brazil will bask in the international spotlight much sooner than 2016. Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and 10 other cities in the country will host the FIFA World Cup soccer tournament in 2014. The timing of the event is particularly good for Vivo Participacoes SA /quotes/comstock/13*!viv/quotes/nls/viv (VIV 27.73, -0.85, -2.97%) , Brazil's largest mobile-phone operator, Dzierwa at U.S. Global Investors said.
"Their projects from the World Cup will be piggybacking [the Olympics], and you can imagine the craze during the soccer championship. We're also playing the communications [angle] with América Movíl."
América Movíl SAB /quotes/comstock/13*!amx/quotes/nls/amx (AMX 47.07, +0.23, +0.49%) is Latin America's largest wireless-services provider. The Mexico-based company has extensive operations in Brazil.
The main players to benefit directly from the Olympics will be construction and tourism-related companies, wrote Emerson Leite, an analyst at Credit Suisse, in the broker's report.
Gerdau, the largest long-steel producer in Brazil, is "the most leveraged to building and infrastructure activities, in our view," he said.
Air carrier Gol Linhas Aereas /quotes/comstock/13*!gol/quotes/nls/gol (GOL 10.12, +0.26, +2.64%) , rival TAM SA /quotes/comstock/13*!tam/quotes/nls/tam (TAM 13.88, +0.51, +3.81%) and rental-car provider Localiza /quotes/comstock/30u!e:rent3 (BR:LOCALIZA 18.85, +0.06, +0.32%) are poised in the short and long term to grow by serving the larger number of tourists, added Leite.
LA Hotel's Invest Tur, a tourism-oriented, real-estate development firm, would also be aided by the games as it already has projects in the host city, and its controlling group, GP Investments, would be helped by its exposure to the restaurants sector, the Credit Suisse analyst elaborated.
Dufry South America Ltd. also will attract investor interest, said Credit Suisse and Citigroup. The company runs duty-free retail shops in all of Brazil's major airports. The shares, which are not part of the Bovespa index, have more than doubled this year to about 33.80 reals ($19.29).
What's more, as Brazil prepares for the Olympics, the country has plans to build a new rail link between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, Brazil's largest city.
Dzierwa suggested that investors look at Gafisa SA /quotes/comstock/13*!gfa/quotes/nls/gfa (GFA 31.81, -0.33, -1.03%) , a home builder he said could contribute to the construction of residential facilities needed to house athletes in an Olympic village.
He also sees opportunity in Companhia de Concessões Rodoviárias, or CCR /quotes/comstock/30u!e:ccro3 (BR:CCR RODOVIAS 33.66, +0.16, +0.48%) , which operates 11 highways between Rio and São Paulo. Shares of CCR are part U.S. Global Investors' Global MegaTrends fund /quotes/comstock/10r!megax (MEGAX 7.81, +0.02, +0.26%) , which focuses on infrastructure plays.
Dzierwa said his company's Global Emerging Markets fund /quotes/comstock/10r!gemfx (GEMFX 7.65, +0.04, +0.53%) is exposed to other companies poised to gain from the Olympics' venture to Brazil, including banking firm Banco Bradesco SA /quotes/comstock/13*!bbd/quotes/nls/bbd (BBD 20.73, +0.23, +1.12%) , competitor Itau Unibanco Múltiplo SA /quotes/comstock/13*!itub/quotes/nls/itub (ITUB 20.75, +0.29, +1.42%) and retailer Lojas Renner SA /quotes/comstock/30u!e:lren3 (BR:LOJAS RENNER 33.90, -0.33, -0.96%) .
In addition, the analysts said media companies are worth a look because of increased ratings and advertising related to the games.
Potential offering of exclusive content would help cable-services provider Net Servicos de Comunicacao SA /quotes/comstock/15*!netc/quotes/nls/netc (NETC 12.83, -0.14, -1.08%) , according to Credit Suisse. Light SA /quotes/comstock/30u!light (BR:LIGHT 80.00, 0.00, 0.00%) would be the main beneficiary in the utility group because it's a pure distribution player in Rio, the broker said.
Economy can dance
The green light for the games in Rio adds to a list of positive developments for Latin America's largest economy and underscores the country's position as "the engine of growth" in the region, said Dzierwa.
Brazil last month became the first country in the region to emerge out of recession, and its second-quarter growth rate of 1.9% was stronger than other nations that have reported economic expansion, including Japan's rate of 0.6% and Germany's rate of 0.4%.
Also last month, the country's debt landed an investment-grade rating at Moody's Investment Service, bringing it to investment grade at all three major ratings agencies.
Investors have also flocked this year to the Brazilian equity market because it is home to two of the world's largest initial public offerings so far this year: the upcoming listing of banking firm Banco Santander SA /quotes/comstock/13*!std/quotes/nls/std (STD 16.09, -0.21, -1.29%) , and credit-transaction processor VisaNet /quotes/comstock/30u!e:vnet3 (BR:VISANET 17.21, -0.09, -0.52%) .
But the market's "euphoria" over Rio's selection will fade quickly, commented Citi's Dennis, as investors return to the usual business at hand -- including gauging the pace of economic recovery and the timing of interest-rate hikes by the central bank.
The central bank this year has slashed its key rate by 500 basis points to a historic low of 8.75% in an effort to shield the economy from the worst of the global recession. Citigroup expects the benchmark Selic rate to be raised by as early as the second quarter of 2010.
Still, Rio's win provides further mild near-term support for its overweight rating on Brazilian equities, according to Citi.
