Update: Rare Earth Metals ETF Climbs 3% As Molycorp Jumps 17%; China’s Exports Remain Low
By Murray Coleman
The hot Market Vectors Rare Earth Strategic Metals ETF (REMX) closed out-front today, gaining 3.7% as a top name, Molycorp (MCP) finished with a 17.7% gain.
The ETF had returned more than 4% in the past five sessions entering Tuesday’s trading, according to Morningstar.
Mark Smith, Molycorp’s chief executive, said at a mining conference that the company is on track to hit first-quarter sales targets on the back of higher prices.
Another catalyst on the day seemed to be that Inner Mongolia Baotou Steel Rare Earth (600111) said it plans to double its output of rare earth magnets by 2015.
Also, China’s exports of rare earth metals remained low in February, according to a Reuters report. That has helped values of those shipments surge almost ninefold from a year ago.
Rare earth metals are used in everything from hybrid car batteries and iPads to high-tech weapons.
Using data from China’s customs office, the analysis found that increases in export values for rare earth metals have shown a direct correlation to the country’s reduction in export levels. “China’s actions have infuriated its trading partners but lifted the shares of the few mining and prospecting companies outside China that are well-placed to capitalise on the constriction of Chinese supply,” the study noted.
Besides Molycorp, those include Canada’s Rare Element Resources (REE) and Australia’s Arafura (ARU).
REE finished up by more than 24% on Tuesday.
The Rare Earth ETF has gained more than 11% in the past three months, but it’s down more than 3% in the past month following a general market correction.
If China is indeed sticking with its strategy of significantly restricting rare earth metal exports, traders are likely to keep benefiting from rising prices. But what if China decides to pull the rug on investors?

Und nicht zuletzt: No risc, no fun!
