Rakuten profit up 21% as mall, travel biz thrive
      Kyodo News

Rakuten Inc. said Thursday its group January-June operating profit increased 20.6 percent from a year earlier to a record-high ¥28.25 billion, boosted by robust its Internet shopping mall business and travel agency operations.

Rakuten, which also operates financial services and a wide range of other businesses, reported a pretax profit of ¥27.54 billion in the first half of the business year, up 22.8 percent from the same period last year, on revenues of ¥164.11 billion, up 17.4 percent.

Consolidated net profit, however, fell 55 percent to ¥17.15 billion due to a special accounting factor, the firm said.

Personal consumption remains sluggish but sales in online shopping show no sign of deceleration, said Rakuten President Hiroshi Mikitani on Thursday at an all-English-language press conference, in line with the firm's recent decision to adopt English as its official in-house language by 2012.

Rakuten attributed its overall rise in earnings to the success of a free shipping campaign in its online mall operations and to an increase in leisure travel and business trips, on the back of improved business performances at other companies.

For the full fiscal 2010 through March, Rakuten did not disclose forecasts for the next half, citing uncertainty in the online business environment and fluctuations in financial markets that influence its securities operation.

Oct 20 (Reuters) - Online retailer Rakuten Inc has petitioned the Japanese antitrust watchdog against plans by Yahoo Japan Corp and Google Inc to work together on Internet searches and advertising, the Nikkei business daily reported.

In a filing with the Japan Fair Trade Commission earlier this month, Rakuten argued that once Yahoo Japan adopts Google's search and advertising technologies, Google will dominate the Internet in Japan, and pose a threat to free competition, the paper said.

Rakuten became the first major Japanese Internet company to publicly voice concerns about the partnership between Yahoo Japan and Google, which was announced in July, the daily said.

U.S. software giant Microsoft Corp had asked the FTC in August to review the deal, the paper said.

Antwort auf Beitrag Nr.: 48.920.228 von R-BgO am 29.01.15 10:35:21Another $350 million into the ride-hailing sector via Careem
      Dec 19.2016

Japan’s internet giant Rakuten has nailed another taxi app investment, taking part in a $350 million funding round for Dubai-based Careem.

Careem, which operates across the Middle East and North Africa, said that the $350 million is part of a still-to-be-completed $500 million round.

The other main participant in the round is the investment arm of Saudi Arabia Telecom, which also led Careem’s $1.7 million seed funding in 2013.

The announcement names others in the latest round – Abraaj Group, Al Tayyar Group, Beco Capital, El Sewedy Investments, Endure Capital, Lumia Capital, SQM Frontier and Wamda Capital.

According to Careem’s Crunchbase entry it has now received more than $740 million in financing.

Rakuten’s head of ride-sharing and fintech investments, Oskar Mielczarek de la Miel, is joining the Careem board.

Earlier this year Rakuten was reportedly behind a $120 million funding round for Madrid-based Cabify.

And in 2015 Rakuten announced that it had put $300 million into Lyft, getting an 11.9% stake in return.

Careem has a presence in 47 cities across 11 countries and has 150,000 drivers on its books and has handled six million customers across the region to date.

      HomeAway links up with Rakuten
      Jul 7.2017

Expedia Inc’s HomeAway has signed a partnership with ecommerce giant Rakuten as the home rentals sector in Japan bursts into life.

HomeAway will start selling inventory from “Rakuten Lifull Stay”, a partnership between Rakuten and housing and real estate information service Lifull which was only announced a few weeks ago.

The scale and ambition of Rakuten Lifull Stay is outlined in its announcement. Rakuten has more than 90 million members in Japan while Lifull lists some with 8 million properties and has a network of more than 22,000 affiliated real estate stores.

While a lot of Lifull’s business is renting homes and flats to “locals” rather than inbound or domestic tourists, the potential of vacation rental in Japan is significant, driven by a government which has identified tourism as a growth area. It wants 40 million visitors per year by 2020, 60 million per year by 2030. In 2016 the number was 24 million.

But at the same time there is a shortage of accommodation in Japan, prompting the government to pass The Private Lodging Business Law, essentially legalising home rentals. It is this law and the positive regulatory environment it creates that it driving the current activity in Japan.

Rakuten Lifull is offering people who want to rent out their homes through its own platform – and now via HomeAway – a number of support services. The “operational burden [for hosts] will also be reduced through the development of outsourcing options with external partners,” it said.

HomeAway has previously said that Japan is one of its biggest markets in Asia. The tie-up with Rakuten Lifull gives it access to more inventory in Japan and comes a few weeks after it started working with the destination marketing organisation for the region of Setouchi, listing historic properties in the area.

      Warum Viber eine Goldmine ist
Today, chatbots allow you to organize all the sales process in the messenger – from picking up the goods to payment and tracking the delivery.

In this case, a customer doesn’t need to open a site or install an application, register, and the whole process looks like a conversation.

In Bain & Company research says that when brands responding to customers through this channel, they can expect to increase revenue per user on average from 20 to 40%.
