Ford Analyst Looks Past $20 to $24 a Share
      Ted Reed.

In a report issued Friday, Bank of America-Merrill Lynch analyst John Murphy raised his target price to $24. Shortly before midday, the shares were trading at $16.75, up 6 cents. Obviously, getting to $20, a level Ford shares have not seen since 2001, would represent an important breakout, one that is anticipated by a variety of analysts.

In his report, Murphy said Ford shares should continue to outperform for a variety of reasons including strong management, solid results, an improving balance sheet, strong products and the cyclical recovery in auto sales.

Murphy raised his fourth quarter estimate to 48 cents, his 2011 estimate to $2.40 and his 2012 estimate to $2.55. His new price objective is based on a price/earnings multiple of 10 times earnings in 2011. The consensus estimates for analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters are 48 cents in the fourth quarter and $2.10 in 2011.

"Our current estimates imply that Ford will be comfortably net cash positive in 2011 and Ford Motor Credit Company remains significantly over capitalized, which should drive higher value for shareholders," Murphy wrote. "We believe Ford is entering the sweet spot of its product cadence in model years 2011-2014.

It is difficult to measure the short-term success of a management team in the automotive industry, as so much is dependent upon the economic cycle," he continued. "However, we believe Alan Mulally has led Ford through what is likely the worst of the downturn, and has positioned the company for success as volumes recover."

In a second report, Murphy forecasts light vehicle sales of 15 million in 2011, among the highest estimates in the industry, where 2010 sales are generally expected to total about 11.5 million, up from 10.4 million in 2009. Auto sales rose 17% in November.

Murphy notes that for two consecutive months, the seasonally adjusted annual rate has been 12.3 million vehicles. "We believe that the cyclical recovery is still being underestimated and undervalued by the market, and that there is still near-term upside in many of the auto stocks," he said.
The cyclical trend should also benefit GM, but Murphy has not rated the largest U.S. automaker. Standard & Poor's has a hold rating on GM, which traded at $33.93 midday Thursday, down 52 cents.

One sign of automotive demand is that used vehicle prices have reached all-time highs. This "indicates that demand for travel utility is being fulfilled by the substitute product," Murphy wrote. "This is arguably a function of not just increased demand, but also a lower supply of used vehicles" because fewer people are selling their used cars.

On Thursday, Ford said it will invest $600 million to re-tool its Louisville assembly plant, making it the company's "most-flexible, high-volume plant in the world." Construction will begin in mid-December. When the plant re-opens late in 2011, it will require an additional 1,800 employees, who will work on building the next-generation Escape for North America.

Total staffing will be 2,900 workers on two shifts, up from one shift today. Louisville had been building the Ford Explorer SUV, a task that will move to the Chicago assembly plant.

      Der Report:

CEO Alan Mulally easily beat out Steve Jobs, Vikram Pandit, Jeff Bezos and Reed Hastings to win the 2010 MarketWatch CEO of the Year award, in a resounding acknowledgment by readers of his resilience during and after the automobile industry’s historic crisis.

      Ford CEO Alan Mulally.
While MarketWatch readers gave Mulally an early and insurmountable lead in the CEO of the Year race, MarketWatch’s editorial staff named Apple’s /quotes/comstock/15*!aapl/quotes/nls/aapl (AAPL 320.29, +0.53, +0.17%) Steve Jobs its CEO of the Decade.

See the full special report on the 2010 MarketWatch CEO awards.

So far in 2010, unit sales are up 21% at Ford, double that of the broader industry, setting Ford up to gain market share in back-to-back years for the first time since 1993. In the third quarter, Ford reported a 69% jump in earnings to achieve a fifth straight quarterly profit.

Ford’s stock has almost doubled this year to $16.80 after more than quadrupling in 2009. Meanwhile, Toyota Motor Corp., once seemingly invincible, has seen its shares drop 6% this year.

Mulally’s stint as Ford’s top executive began in 2006, when he succeeded William Clay Ford Jr. ahead of an industry collapse that nobody could have seen coming — nobody except perhaps Mulally himself.

In a move as risky as it was prescient, Mulally, fresh from a prominent role at Boeing Co., decided to borrow almost $24 billion by mortgaging Ford’s assets long before rivals General Motors Co. and Chrysler had to lean on taxpayers for survival.

Ford to this day continues to cash in on the goodwill it earned by staving off the bankruptcies that swallowed the domestic competition in 2009. And Mulally has, in turn, become the face of what’s right in American manufacturing. Slideshow: Alan Mulally and Ford – 2010 in pictures

Even in 2010, when leaner versions of GM /quotes/comstock/13*!gm/quotes/nls/gm (GM 33.66, -0.03, -0.08%) and Chrysler clawed their way back from the abyss and were poised for battle, Ford and Mulally were ready with a slew of strong new products and the tailwind of consumers’ newfound devotion to the company that put, and kept, America on wheels.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- In a move to boost fuel economy, Ford Motor Co. said Monday it will add an Auto Start-Stop system that shuts off the engine when a vehicle comes to a stop. The automaker said the feature will be added to its conventional cars, crossovers and SUVs in North America.

Ford's statement said that the feature is expected to boost fuel economy by between 4% and 10%, and eliminate tailpipe emissions while the vehicle is stationary.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Ford is rising fast in a survey of consumers' feelings toward toward car brands. In fact, Ford is now virtually tied for first place with fast-falling Toyota in the most recent Consumer Reports Car Brand Perception Survey.

Over the last two years, Ford's score in the survey has risen by 35 points while Toyota's score has fallen by 46 points.

9Email Print CommentIn 2010, Toyota was the only major automaker to suffer a decline in sales compared to 2009. Toyota's image has been battered by a spate of recalls and safety scares that started about 18 moths ago.

The big drop in consumers' perceptions of Toyota happened during the past year, said Jeff Bartlett, an editor with Consumer Reports. When the same survey was done early last year, news of Toyota recalls hadn't really shifted consumers' views of the automaker yet and it was the best liked brand in the survey -- by a long shot.

This year, views of Toyota began to plummet, he said.

"By Spring, it had really started to show some weakness," Bartlett said.

But Fords's ascent is not simply because it took advantage of Toyota's downfall. Ford made big strides in 2009, particularly in perceptions of environmental friendliness, quality and style, and maintained those gains in 2010 while Toyota slipped.

GM vs. Ford: Which stock is the better buy?
By Paul R. La Monica, assistant managing editorJanuary 6, 2011: 12:48 PM ET.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Perhaps more iconic U.S. companies should consider government-sponsored bankruptcies.

Shares of General Motors (GM) are up about 15% since the new GM went public in mid-November. By way of comparison, the S&P 500 and top rival Ford Motor (F, Fortune 500) are both up about 8%.

4Email Print Comment The slimmed down GM, which has sloughed off massive amounts of debt and rid itself of the struggling Saturn, Pontiac, Hummer and Saab brands, now has a market value of a little over $58 billion. That is slightly above the peak market value for the old GM about ten years ago.

What's more, GM, which filed for bankruptcy in June 2009 and emerged from Chapter 11 a month later, is now worth only $4 billion less than Ford. Does this make sense? Yes and no.

Now that Wall Street analysts have launched coverage of GM, unsurprisingly with mostly glowing reviews, it's easier to do some apples-to-apples comparisons of the two companies.

In GM's favor is the fact that it is still bigger than Ford in terms of global sales. Analysts are forecasting total revenue of $140 billion for GM versus $124 billion for Ford this year.

GM's sales growth is expected to be slightly higher: up 6% from 2010 for GM compared to a 4% estimated year-over-year increase for Ford.

      10 automotive surprises of 2010
GM also finished 2010 more strongly than Ford, with a sales jump in the U.S. of 16%, (excluding the discontinued brands.) Ford's December sales were up 8%, after backing out Volvo, which was sold to Chinese automaker Geely, and Mercury, which was discontinued.

So yes, GM has momentum on its side. That's expected to be on display at next week's Detroit Auto Show as well. The company plans to unveil its new Buick Verano among other vehicles at the show.

Kirk Ludtke, an analyst with CRT Capital Group in Stamford, Conn., said that if he had to pick one stock over the other, he'd take GM. He pointed to GM's lower debt load and stronger presence in China.

"There's more upside with GM," he said. "It has a better balance sheet and better position in emerging markets than Ford," Ludtke said.

That's undeniably true. Still, here's where things get tricky. Call me old school, but I have trouble wrapping my head around the notion that GM is now worth more than it ever was in its pre-bankruptcy history.

Also, GM's stock now trades at about 9.5 times 2011 earnings estimates, a small premium to Ford, which is valued at nearly 8.5 times Wall Street's profit forecasts.

Does GM, a company that needed a lifeline from Uncle Sam to survive, really deserve a higher valuation than Ford, the one member of Detroit's Big 3 that made it through the recession without a pit stop in bankruptcy court?

Ludtke thinks so. He points out that Ford did get a bailout, if you will, it just happened to be from private investors and not the government.

"Ford avoided bankruptcy because it failed first. It went to the capital markets in 2006 and raised a huge amount of financing," he said.

Daunting task for new GM marketing guru
I don't think that's entirely fair though. There is a big difference between issuing bonds on Wall Street to deal with a cash crunch and a quasi-nationalization through a big government investment. Shouldn't Ford get more credit for avoiding Chapter 11?

Tim Denoyer, an analyst with Wolfe Trahan & Co., in New York thinks so. He said that customers may continue to view Ford more favorably than GM because Ford doesn't have the taint of a taxpayer bailout.

"The benefits of GM having a smaller debt load than Ford may be outweighed by the benefits Ford gets from increased market share and more favorable customer ratings," Denoyer said. He added that for the time being, Ford's pipeline of vehicles is better than GM's.

To be fair though, Ludtke and Denoyer said they like the prospects for Ford and GM -- so it's not like you should buy one and short the other. Denoyer said that Ford and GM will probably both get a boost from announcements at the Detroit Auto Show.

And David Whiston, an analyst with Morningstar in Chicago, said long-term investors shouldn't feel a need to choose one over the other.

"I like both stocks. There is going to be a huge auto recovery over the next few years that will benefit both of them," he said..

Nonetheless, Whiston said that his estimates for the fair value of Ford and GM shares are $26 and $46 a share, respectively. That's nearly 20% higher than GM's current price -- but more than 40% above Ford's.

-- The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Paul R. La Monica. Other than Time Warner, the parent of CNNMoney, and Abbott Laboratories, La Monica does not own positions in any individual stocks.
      ==================================================================

      Ford to hire 7,000 workers
By Chris Isidore, senior writerJanuary 10, 2011: 2:47 PM ET

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Ford Motor announced Monday it will add 7,000 new hourly and salaried jobs in the United States by the end of 2012.

The announcement, made on the opening day of the Detroit auto show, said Ford (F, Fortune 500) is adding nearly 4,000 hourly jobs at several of its U.S. plants this year, including 1,800 at the Louisville Assembly Plant, where it plans to start building the new design of the Ford Escape crossover SUV later in the year.

35Email Print CommentAnd the company plans to add another 2,500 factory jobs next year.

Ford also will add 750 salaried engineering jobs in product development and manufacturing. The engineers will specialize in batteries, system controls, software and energy storage to work on electric vehicles in Detroit and eight other cities: Boston; Chicago; Cincinnati; Columbus, Ohio; Milwaukee; Raleigh and Durham, N.C.; and San Jose, Calif.

      13 hot new cars
The company has cut staff substantially since 2001. And the new workers will only replace a fraction of the employees lost to the recession. Ford had 61,000 U.S. employees at the end of 2010, according to a company spokeswoman. That's down from 76,000 at the end of 2007, and 163,000 employees 10 years ago.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Ford Motor Co. announced Tuesday that it plans to invest $400 million over the next two years in its auto manufacturing plant in Kansas City, Mo. as it prepares to build a new vehicle there.

Ford did not say what the new vehicle would be. That announcement will be made later this year. The automaker is revamping its model line-up to focus more on fuel-efficient cars and crossover SUVs.

13Email Print The Kansas City plant has been producing Ford F-150 trucks and Ford Escape crossover SUVs. Ford announced late last year that Escape production would move to the automaker's Louisville, Ky. plant beginning with the 2012 model. The F-150 will continue being built in Kansas City, Ford said, alongside the new vehicle.

Staffing levels at the Kansas City plant will remain the same, Ford said. The plant opened in 1951 and currently employs 3,750 full-time workers.

Ford's sales were up almost 20% last year, surpassing Toyota as the second-best selling automaker in the U.S.

In December Ford announced it was investing $600 million in a Louisville, Ky. plant to build the next-generation Escape there, adding 1,800 jobs.

At the Detroit Auto Show earlier this month,Ford announced plans to add 7,000 jobs by the end of 2012, including, in addition to factory workers, 750 engineers who will work on new vehicle technologies.

      0:00 /4:35Ford optimistic, hiring 7,000 in U.S.
"Investing in our plants, products and people is critical to Ford's ability to compete with the best in the business," said Mark Fields, Ford's president of the Americas in Tuesday's announcement.

The $400 million investment in the Kansas City plant will be used to install a new body shop, new machines and other upgrades, Ford said.

Ford worked with Missouri's governor, Jay Nixon, and the Missouri state legislature to craft a package of tax incentives for auto manufacturing in the state, Ford said in its announcement.

"Last year, we came together to pass the Missouri Manufacturing Jobs Act to help our state compete for the production jobs of the future," Nixon said in the announcement. "That hard work paid off."

Ford Accelerates Intelligent Vehicle Research, Creating 'Talking' Vehicles to Make Roads Safer

      WASHINGTON, Jan. 26, 2011 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ --

•Ford is rapidly expanding its commitment to intelligent vehicles that wirelessly talk to each other, warning of potential dangers to enhance safety and flag impending traffic congestion to help improve the environment
•Intelligent vehicles could potentially help in 81 percent of all police-reported light-vehicle crashes involving unimpaired drivers, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) report
•Ford is building the first-ever prototype intelligent vehicles that will tour the U.S. beginning this spring and will provide additional prototypes for the Department of Transportation's world-first research clinics expected to begin this summer
•Ford is doubling its intelligent vehicle investment in 2011 and plans a new 20-member task force of scientists and engineers to explore the technology's broader possibilities

Ford is aggressively accelerating its commitment to wirelessly connected intelligent vehicles - known as vehicle-to-vehicle communications - becoming the first automaker to build prototype vehicles for demonstrations across the U.S., doubling its intelligent vehicle investment in 2011 and dedicating even more scientists to developing this technology.

"Ford believes intelligent vehicles that talk to each other through advanced Wi-Fi are the next frontier of collision avoidance innovations that could revolutionize the driving experience and hold the potential of helping reduce many crashes," said Sue Cischke, group vice president, Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering.

An October National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) report on the potential safety benefits of vehicle-to-vehicle communications estimates that intelligent vehicles could help in as many as4,336,000 police-reported, light-vehicle crashes annually, or approximately 81 percent of all light-vehicle crashes involving unimpaired drivers. Experts say intelligent vehicles could be on the road in five to 10 years.

Ford's demonstration vehicles will hit the road this spring, starting at major technology hubs across the country.

      How it works

Ford's vehicle communications research technology allows vehicles to talk wirelessly with one another using advanced Wi-Fi signals, or dedicated short-range communications, on a secured channel allocated by the Federal Communications Commission. Unlike radar-based safety features, which identify hazards within a direct line of sight, the Wi-Fi-based radio system allows full-range, 360-degree detection of potentially dangerous situations, such as when a driver's vision is obstructed.

For example, drivers could be alerted if their vehicle is on path to collide with another vehicle at an intersection, when a vehicle ahead stops or slows suddenly or when a traffic pattern changes on a busy highway. The systems also could warn drivers if there is a risk of collision when changing lanes, approaching a stationary or parked vehicle, or if another driver loses control.

Ford hits the gas on vehicle communications

After a decade of research, Ford plans a new 20-member task force - consisting of company planners, engineers and scientists from around the world with expertise in safety, eco-mobility, infotainment and driver convenience - to accelerate development of intelligent vehicles with features that provide a range of benefits to consumers.

Ford also is doubling its intelligent vehicle research investment, building on the company's SYNC(R) and MyFord Touch(TM) innovations. The goal is to define the next 10 years of safety, convenience and driver assistance, and strengthen the company's position as the global industry leader in connected vehicle technology.

"While there are challenges ahead, the foundation of these smarter vehicles is advanced versions of technologies that are pervasive - Wi-Fi and crash avoidance systems that Ford has pioneered in mainstream vehicles today," said Paul Mascarenas, vice president, Research and Advanced Engineering and chief technical officer. "Intelligent vehicles could help warn drivers of numerous potential dangers such as a car running a red light but blocked from the view of a driver properly entering the intersection."

      Speaking the same language

Ford is partnering with other automakers, the federal government, as well as local and county road commissions to create a common language that ensures all vehicles can talk to each other based on a common communication standard.

This public-private partnership will include the world's first government-sponsored driving clinics beginning in summer 2011, for which the company will contribute two prototype Ford Taurus sedans. The DOT's Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) will head the research, continuing to coordinate with a coalition of automakers organized by the Crash Avoidance Metrics Partnership (CAMP), which is a joint research group headed by Ford and General Motors. The partnership is working to develop inter-operability standards in advance of completing the research phase in 2013.

"Ford has laid the groundwork to give vehicles a voice with SYNC and Wi-Fi technology," said Jim Vondale, director, Ford Automotive Safety Office. "Now we're working with other automakers and government leaders worldwide to develop common standards globally to bring intelligent vehicles to market quicker and more affordably."

Vondale has been appointed by Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood to represent automakers on the ITS Advisory Committee. Mike Shulman, technical leader, Ford Research and Advanced Engineering, leads the government-industry technical partnership as program manager for CAMP.

      Beyond safety, endless possibilities

By reducing crashes, intelligent vehicles could ease traffic delays, which would save drivers both time and fuel costs. Congestion also could be avoided through a network of intelligent vehicles and infrastructure that would process real-time traffic and road information and allow drivers to choose less congested routes.

According to Texas Transportation Institute's (TTI) 2010 Urban Mobility Report, traffic congestion continues to worsen in American cities of all sizes, annually wasting nearly 3.9 billion gallons of fuel in 2009 and costing the average commuter $808 in additional fuel. Leading factors in traffic delays are caused by accidents, breakdowns and road debris, TTI maintains.

"The day is not far off when our vehicles will operate like mobile devices with four wheels, constantly exchanging information and communicating with our environment to do things like shorten commute times, improve fuel economy and generally help us more easily navigate life on the road," said Mascarenas.

      Laying the connectivity groundwork

Many of Ford's current technologies show how intelligent vehicles will be able to help drivers. For example, features that alert drivers to approaching hazards, such as Ford's collision warning with brake support and Blind Spot Information System (BLIS(R)) with cross-traffic alert rely on radar sensors to detect vehicles or objects close to the vehicle.

"Ford has pioneered connectivity in modern vehicles with SYNC," said Shulman. "We believe advanced Wi-Fi for intelligent vehicles could be added to smartphones or GPS systems and simply connect to SYNC like today's phones."
