DRAM and NAND companies up after Samsung's record earnings
Oct. 31, 2017 11:06 AM ET|By: Brandy Betz, SA News Editor
Leading NAND and DRAM companies are trading up following Samsung’s (OTC:SSNNF, OTC:SSNLF) record earnings.
Samsung reports semiconductor division operating income of 9.96T won with plans for 29.5T won in capital spending in the chip unit this year.
The spending can help Samsung increase production capacity, which would create a better balance between supply and demand.
Increased production will drive down prices, but would help Samsung maintain its dominance in the memory market, according to DRAMeXchange.
The larger competitors, also flush with cash for production expansions, can benefit from Samsung’s lowered prices as it evens the playing field for those unable to charge Samsung-level prices.
DRAM and NAND companies benefiting from the news: Micron (MU +6%), Intel (INTC +2.9%), and Western Digital / SanDisk (WDC +4.1%).

Tepper isn’t the only fund manager that likes the look of Micron. The company has been highlighted multiple times by fund managers profiled in ValueWalk’s exclusive hedge fund newsletter.
In our latest issue, Eric Gomberg of Dane Capital had the following to say about the opportunity:
“What has been most fascinating, and something we’ve not seen discussed at length (and in fairness, we don’t read a ton of sell-side research) is that in the current sales process of Toshiba’s memory unit, Apple particularly (and seemingly in a real way), and to a lesser extent Amazon and Google, have come up as potential members of a consortia to acquire Toshiba’s flash business.
To us, that’s crazy and represents a complete transformation in the view of memory by OEMs. For decades, memory has been the disrespected ugly stepchild of semiconductors. It has been viewed as a commodity product where large OEMs hold leverage and can drive pricing. In our firm’s view, that Apple is even in the conversation as a potential buyer reflects that there is genuine worry that there will be capacity constraints in memory if not in 2018 than in 2019 or 2020 or beyond.
The cost of semiconductor fabs continues to grow. The incremental benefit of die shrinks continues to diminish. The use cases of memory continue to diversify. Again, we understand that Micron is well covered, but it is also a security in which we have a 20-year history in the space and perspective that we think is differentiated from many in the covering the company. Not to mention, at 6x earnings, we’re certainly in line with the Dane model of owning cheap stocks. If we’re right, there’s a tremendous potential for a positive multiple re-rating.

DRAM ASP to rise in Q1
Nanya president Lee Pei-Pung expects DRAM prices to rise in Q1 – usually a down quarter.
“DRAM prices still have room to go up in the first quarter of 2018, a traditional low season for memory chips, thanks to healthy demand and tight supplies,” says Lee.
Lee reckons that the price will stay high all next year.
DRAM ASPs rose 50% in Q3, will see a 20% rise across H2, grow 5% in Q1 and another 10% during 2018, reckons DRAMeXchange.
“It’s a new trend, starting from this year, that DRAM chips used in data centre servers have replaced smartphones to become the strongest growth driver,” says Lee, “new data centres in future AI computing really need greater DRAM capabilities to run more smoothly and efficiently.”

weiss???
Viele Grüße
