Unity Opto lands large volume orders for LED lighting products

Taiwan-based LED packaging house Unity Opto Technology has reportedly landed US$10 million worth of orders for LED lighting products from a client in Europe with shipments to begin in the third quarter. The company's total shipments of LED lighting products are expected to top NT$2 billion (US$69.2 million) in 2011.

The sales from LED lighting products accounted for 30% of total revenues in June, according to Unity Opto. The figure is expected to exceed 30% in July. Unity Opto indicated the hope that demand for LED backlight products to return in July and orders to increase in August. Third-quarter revenues are anticipated to grow by 20-30% on quarter.

The market of LED lighting has been growing rapidly due to Japan's nuclear crisis and declarations from many countries such as Germany and Italy to abolish nuclear power plants. In addition, the lack of electricity supply and increasing electricity price all helped to expand the development of LED lighting.

Unity Opto pointed out that lighting orders from Japan and Europe have been growing recently and are mainly for indoor and office lights. Unity Opto recently announced the development of the light-weight 8W high color rendering index (CRI) light bulb that only weighs 65mg, half the weight of the LED light bulbs currently available in the market. The brightness of the new product can reach 550lm and is able to replace a traditional 60W light bulb while conserving up to 75% of energy.

As for LED backlight modules, Unity Opto believes as the demand for TVs increases in August plus the orders from tablet PC makers, sales will improve.
