Dynamotive hat ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von Treibstoffen aus cellulosehaltigem Pflanzenmaterial erfunden. Auf den ersten Blick eine Katastrophe:
- seit 09 werden keine Unternehmenszahlen mehr kommuniziert
- eine angeblich wiedereröffnete Anlage ging wohl nie in Betrieb

In letzter Zeit gab es allerdings einige bemerkenswerte News, insbesondere ein Projekt in Australien zur Gewinnung von FLugzeugtreibstoff aus Eukalyptusbäumen. Dabei gibt es keine Konkurrenz zur Nahrungsmittelproduktion und die streifenförmigen Eukalyptuspflanzungen werten die Agrarlandschaft sogar ökologisch auf.

Das Konsortium wurde zusammen mit ROC und Virgin Airlines gegründet, wobei Virgin Airlines wohl auf Nachfrage geäußert hat, dass sie keinen Grund sehen, an der Zuverlässigkeit von Dynamotive zu zweifeln.
Zuletzt trat auch GE dem Konsortium bei.

Airbus likes mallee

Airline manufacturing giant Airbus says it joined a group including Virgin Australia that’s studying the use of eucalyptus mallee trees grown in Western Australia’s wheat belt as a potential alternative fuel for airplanes, according to Bloomberg. Mallee is seen as a suitable crop because it helps return salt-affected land to a productive state and can be planted on farms alongside crops, Frederic Eychenne, new energies program manager for Airbus, said in an interview at a conference in Geneva. “This will facilitate developing agriculture in dry areas, as the mallee trees will help keep water in the ground,” Eychenne said. Mallee plants would help develop the cultivation of wheat as well, he said.

The move comes as the European Union pushes airlines toward cleaner fuels by forcing them to cap emissions or buy permits for the excess beginning this year. Virgin’s interest in mallee was announced last year, when it joined a consortium of renewable fuel technology and agriculture interests to develop a sustainable aviation biofuel project using pyrolysis technology developed by Canadian company Dynamotive Energy Systems. A demonstration unit is scheduled to be completed this year, followed by a commercial-scale plant that could be operational as early as 2014. A CSIRO report last year suggested he Australian aviation sector could achieve a 5% biofuel share in their total fuel use by 2020, expanding to 40% by 2050.

Mallee biomass tour impresses aviation leaders

Representatives from Airbus, GE and Virgin Australia were today shown firsthand the progress being made to develop a viable biomass industry in regional Australia.

Future Farm Industries Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) hosted the visitors at two farms near Narrogin, south-east of Perth.

The visit provided an important opportunity for aviation representatives, farmers, researchers and regional development organisations to catch up on the latest developments in the CRC’s research on mallee cropping, biomass production, and the potential of a commercial aviation biofuel industry.

Visitors enjoyed tours of the mallee strands where staff from the WA Department of Environment and Conservation, Victorian Department of Primary Industries and CSIRO - all CRC partners - explained the mallee supply chain including growing, harvesting, and processing.

Peter Zurzolo, Chief Executive Officer of Future Farm CRC, said the presence of the aviation industry representatives was significant.

“The aviation industry represents a huge driver for mallee biofuel development. To see global aviation leaders in a paddock in the WA Wheatbelt indicates how seriously they consider the work of our CRC and partners in helping to develop an environmentally sustainable source of biofuels.

Mallees have a big role to play in that, and it’s great to have the aviation industry as one of the many groups showing an interest in this important work,” he said.

Mr Zurzolo acknowledged that the industry will take a number of years to fully develop, but highlighted the more immediate environmental benefits of having mallees on farms.

“The CRC’s research has shown that mallees can contribute to the management of salinity and waterlogging, act as wind breaks to help prevent soil erosion, and encourage native wildlife by providing food and shelter. Importantly, biomass industries can provide farmers with a diversified income stream.

We understand farmers’ impatience for tangible success with mallee industry development. However, we are confident that momentum is building to make mallee harvest and processing a reality.

Virgin Australia and GE Australia are members of a consortium, including Future Farm Industries CRC, working together to research and develop commercial biofuel for the aviation industry. Airbus has also expressed an interest in the work being undertaken by Future Farm Industries CRC as part of the MOU.

Airbus has joined a consortium including Virgin Australia to study a new pathway to produce sustainable aviation fuels. Eucalyptus mallee trees, grown in Western Australia’s wheat belt are sustainably harvested and converted to a feedstock for refining into alternative aviation fuel via a process called Pyrolysis.
Mallee is indigenous to Australia and is well adapted to the environment. It is a suitable sustainable crop because it helps return salt-affected land to a productive state. Mallee can be planted on farms alongside crops, and provide a range of environmental benefits and contribute to the long term sustainability of the overall farming operation. Growing these trees to make alternative fuels encourages large scale planting, which is expected to bring a range of environmental and social benefits to farmers and rural communities.
The Pyrolysis thermal conversion process has yet to be recognised by the world’s fuels standards authorities. Airbus’ role includes supporting the approval and certification process so that Pyrolysis based fuels can be used for the first time in commercial aviation.
The consortium also includes Future Farm Industries CRC, which is developing sustainable farming systems as part of the Australian Government’s Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) program.
The project objective is to have a pilot alternative fuel production plant operating in Australia in the next year. The sustainability analysis is managed by the CRC, Airbus and the UK’s Manchester Metropolitan University.
“Alternative fuels are a crucial part of the roadmap for sustainable aviation and to help meet our ambitious CO2 reduction targets. We are privileged to be working with our Australian partners in this exciting value chain project,” said Tom Enders, Airbus President and CEO.
Virgin Australia Group Executive of Operations Sean Donohue said: “In order to produce a biofuel that can be used sustainably in our current aircraft, it is important to have members from every part of the supply chain involved. Airbus will bring vast expertise in aircraft manufacturing to the consortium and we are very pleased to have a company of its calibre joining this promising Australian project”.
The partnership agreement aims to develop a complete sustainable aviation bio-fuel production capability in Australia, using only sustainable resources and is part of the Airbus goal to have in place a value chain in every continent by 2012. So far Airbus has value chains in Latin America, Europe the Middle East, and now Australia.

Die neueste Folie stellt ganz schön einen Vorteil durch die Verwendung von Prozessgas statt dem Abfallprodukt Bio-Kohle dar, was einerseits ein zusätzliches Produkt für den möglichen Verkauf beding, als auch andererseits die CO2-Bilanz verbessert.

Jetzt wärs halt nur noch schön, wenn sich jd. mal dazu durchringen könnte, diese Technologie in Lizenz zu nehmen und ein paar Fabriken aufzubauen....

Axens, an international provider of advanced technologies, catalysts, adsorbents and services to the refining, petrochemical, gas and alternative fuels industries, IFP Energies nouvelles (IFPEN), a leading research and development center in the fields of energy, transport and environment and Dynamotive, a leader in pyrolysis fuel processes, announced completion of agreements for the development, industrialization and commercialization of a proprietary innovative process to produce transportation fuels from pyrolysis oil.
The process, initially developed by Dr Radlein and Dynamotive, has involved IFPEN for the past years during which extensive analysis and verification of economic and technical parameters concluded that the process has competitive advantages when compared to existing processes and competing technologies.
In pursuit of the development, laboratory scale units were developed and operated in Canada and in France at IFPEN facilities in Lyon where Dynamotive’s bio-oil was upgraded to synthetic hydrocarbons. This pre-development work has lead to patent applications by IFPEN, Dynamotive and Dr. Radlein.
The agreements mark the completion of Dynamotive’s investment program in the process as IFPEN commits to develop the full bio-oil upgrading technology. Dynamotive on its part will cooperate in provisioning pyrolysis oil to IFPEN for the development program. Axens will finalize the development of the upgrading technology, and will be in charge of its industrialization and commercialization.

Need to eliminate fossil fuel subsidies

As the operator of three airlines that fly over every continent, the Virgin Group is a major consumer of fossil fuels. Recognizing that carbon emissions resulting from consumption of these fuels is driving catastrophic global climate change, my role as leader of the company is to ensure that Virgin provides financial support to non-profit groups that are exploring renewable energy and seeking market-based solutions to climate change, like the Carbon War Room. We are also investing in this field ourselves: one of our airlines, Virgin Australia, is working in partnership with Dynamotive Energy Systems and Renewable Oil Corp. Pty Ltd to develop an alternative jet fuel that will enable our global aircraft fleet to transition to clean energy.This innovation will be good for the planet and, in the long run, may boost Virgin airlines’ profitability.

Just listen to the urgent speeches from world leaders, and you might think that most governments agree that while we have no sustainable, clean alternative to fossil fuels that we can implement on a large scale today, we need to find one and put it in place quickly. This would help us to avoid the worst consequences of climate change, like dying oceans and widespread desertification, which will harm people around the world, especially the poor.

Unfortunately, however, government resources are actually flowing the other way: according to a report from the National Resources Defense Council, since 2009, global subsidies for fossil fuels have almost tripled to an estimated $775 billion this year. Meanwhile, official worldwide support for clean energy is a paltry $50 billion. This shameful investment ratio—15 dirty dollars invested for every clean one—shows that the perverse relationship between big government and big oil has not changed, and is still shaping the future of our planet.
This means that entrepreneurs’ technological innovativeness and their hopes of building our clean energy future are being stifled. Fossil fuel subsidies drain government budgets, throwing up a fiscal wall that blocks state support for clean energy while protecting the interests of the oil industry.

This situation is well known. The G-20 and dozens of other nations have all pledged to phase these subsidies out. But three types remain common: consumption subsidies in developing nations, consumption subsidies in rich developed countries and subsidies for fossil fuel producers.

The latter two are inexcusable—rich nations have no business subsidizing rich oil, gas and coal companies or their own consumers. These companies use political contributions and armies of lobbyists to cajole governments to ignore the consequences: an economic crisis worse than the recent recession awaits if these nations fail to spark growth in areas that can stimulate growth and create jobs. Large oil companies like ExxonMobil Corp., which in 2011 earned more than $40 billion, make no hiring or firing decisions based on government handouts, but startup green energy companies will hire more engineers and technicians, more marketing professionals and managers if governments invest in them.

Consumption subsidies are most common in developing countries that can least afford such inefficiency. For poor nations, providing fuel to their citizens at below-market prices has become a crippling trap—any attempt to change them can cost a politician an election or cause riots. Yet the International Energy Agency says that only about 8% of subsides actually benefit the poorest 20% of the population. Governments from India to Nigeria to Indonesia need to eliminate fuel subsidies and immediately provide at least half the savings directly to their poor constituents through development programmes.

Virgin will continue to develop alternative fuels, and eventually we and our competitors will find solutions that will scale up and become competitive. But while many businesses are trying to turn the situation around, governments can make the difference. By taxing fossil fuels and subsidizing renewables, governments can tilt the playing field toward a brighter future. State investments in innovative solar, bio and wind energy providers today will give us breakthroughs in just a few years.

The issue is urgent. Please urge your congressional or parliamentary representative today to press your government to eliminate fossil fuel subsidies by 2015.

Aus der Agenda ist zu entnehmen, dass Dynamotive in den B2B-Meetings ausgebucht ist. Scheint also doch das Interesse anderer Unternehmen zu wecken. Ich hoffe nur, dass es bald mal positive Zahlen gibt und konkrete Projekte.

Immerhin ist in der Präsentation alleine in West-Australien von einem Potential von 200 mal 200 Pyrolyse (+200 Upgrading Facilities) die Rede, das sind schon ganz schöne Dimensionen. GE arbeitet anscheinend an der Zertifizierung für Flugzeugturbinen, Airbus an der Lifecycle Analysis (was immer das heißen mag)

Also ich bleib dran und bin im Plus - bin mir aber bewusst, dass es sich um eine Seifenblase handeln kann. Im Moment hört sich alles sehr gut an.

Dynamotive ist seit längerer Zeit von der SEC delisted. Geschieht ihnen ja eigentlich recht, nachdem seit Ewigkeiten keine ordentlichen Bilanzen, Jahresberichte o.ä. vorgelegt wurden.

Habe mich über Axels (einer der Lizenzpartner) um ein Lebenszeichen bemüht, d.h. rauszubekommen, ob noch irgendwelche Aktivitäten rund um Dynamotive laufen, und habe tatsächlich von Mr. Kingston eine Antwort erhalten:
