      2011-11-08
HSINCHU, Taiwan, November 8, 2011 – E Ink® Holdings, the leading developer and marketer of electronic paper display (EPD) technologies, today announced it has reached $1 Billion (NT$ 30 billion) in revenue for 2011. Its consolidated October revenues reached NT$ 5.329 billion, representing a growth of 93% as compared to that in October 2010, and a growth of 16% as compared to September 2011. Accumulated sales from January to October totaled NT$ 33.271 billion, representing a growth of 83% over the same period in 2010. The Company achieved this milestone in less than four quarters due to increasing sales of its ePaper displays from customers including Hanvon, Plastic Logic, Bookeen, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo and Sony.

"Despite the difficult economy, sales of our ePaper and LCD displays continue to rise due in part to the new wave of eReaders and tablets debuting just in time for the holiday season," said Scott Liu, Chairman of E Ink. "We also see tremendous opportunity for our Triton color displays for eTextbooks that we believe will transform education."

E Ink continues to revolutionize the display industry with its ePaper displays that deliver high-contrast, sunlight readability and low-power performance, further closing the digital divide between paper and electronic displays. In October, E Ink's Triton™ color display was a winner of the prestigious Wall Street Journal 2011 Technology Innovation Awards in the consumer electronics category.

In addition to ePaper display products, E Ink's LCD business has also seen growth, with major customers recently releasing price-competitive tablet PCs using FFS wide viewing angle technology by Hydis, E Ink's subsidiary in South Korea. The Company expects tablets and eReaders to be complementary products, with tablets offering mobile multimedia interactivity, and eReaders offering the paper-like experience and long battery life needed for immersive reading.

      Company Description

E Ink is revolutionizing e-reading. The company develops electronic ink technology used in electronic displays. The ink is printed onto plastic film and contains microcapsules full of positively or negatively charged particles, which form images when an electrical current is applied. The technology, which has the advantage of being visible in direct sunlight, has been used in such applications as signage, mobile phones, electronic readers, and watches. Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, and Sony all have products based on E Ink's technology. The company was acquired by Taiwan-based Prime View International in 2009 for $215 million. Prime View changed its name to E Ink Holdings the following year.

Antwort auf Beitrag Nr.: 42.615.981 von R-BgO am 19.01.12 12:59:09da der Link nicht funzt, hier ein kurzes copy-paste aus einer mail an mich:

There’s been no shortage of investment in printed, flexible, and organic electronics aimed at driving next-generation displays, organic photovoltaics (OPV), transparent conductive films (TCFs), smart packaging, and thin-film batteries. Yet, challenged by the inherent technical hurdles and long development cycles, few firms have turned their potential into big cash returns. Those that eventually succeed will do so by building partnerships today that pool expertise in materials, equipment and device development.

This week’s graphic expressly focuses on display developers, and applies the Lux Innovation Grid to show how potential partners compare in technical value and business execution. The field encompasses more mature technologies, like small molecule organic light-emitting diode (OLED) and electrophoretic displays, in addition to emerging technologies, including electrochromic and electrofluidic displays.

A glance at companies comprising the Dominant Quadrant clearly illustrates that OLED materials and equipment have a clear headstart over more emergent technologies like electrochromic and electrofluidic displays. OLED displays have found success thus far primarily in mobile displays, but development of larger displays like televisions is underway. Notable players include materials developers like Universal Display Corporation (UDC) and Novaled, in addition to equipment makers like Kateeva. These companies also comprise the majority of the "Positive" takes on the chart due to the strength of OLED technologies in general and the solutions that these companies can provide.

E Ink stands out for its Technical Value and Business Execution. The former derives from its high score in technology and intellectual property, the latter from its strong partnerships and management team. In addition, E Ink scores the only "Strong Positive" on our chart. This lofty position should not come as a surprise, since E Ink has a nearly 100% market share of the electrophoretic market, which is commonly found in e-readers like the Amazon Kindle.

Emerging reflective and flexible technologies are High-potential. Particularly for OLEDs, the transition to flexible displays requires new materials and substrates to protect the OLEDs from atmospheric contamination. New materials such as flexible glass from Corning Display or barrier films for plastic substrates from Tera-Barrier can enable flexible OLEDs.

Emerging reflective displays, like electrofluidic displays from Gamma Dynamics and cholesteric liquid crystal displays (LCDs) from Kent Displays, also fall into the High Potential category. Competing with electrophoretics will not be easy for the reflective technology developers, as both companies score above 3 on Technical Value, but below 3 on Business Execution - due to low scores on barriers to growth and revenue per employee.

E Ink / Hydis Licenses Fringe Field Switching to Sharp
      July 12th, 2012

Earlier today, E Ink Holdings (EIH) chairman Liu Cheng announced the signing of a licensing agreement that will allow Sharp to use the fringe field switching (FFS) LCD technology developed by EIH’s Korean subsidiary Hydis. The agreement has a duration of 10 years, and is retroactive to April 1 of this year.

In a Chinese-language article by Yang Ling Wen that appeared today in NowNews.com, the agreement was referred to as a "cross-license agreement," which is how the two companies are diplomatically describing it. However, the major motivation for the agreement is to allow Sharp to use FFS technology in the panels it will be making for Apple iPads, and perhaps iPhones and iTVs. This is essential for Sharp because the panels for the iPhone and iPad made by LG Display and Samsung Display use FFS under license (although each refuses to acknowledge that, and Apple has gone along with the charade).

E Ink reports losses in 3Q12
Sammi Huang, Taipei; Alex Wolfgram, DIGITIMES [Thursday 1 November 2012]

E Ink Holdings (EIH) has reported NT$234 million (US$8 million) in losses during the third quarter of 2012, or a loss of NT$0.21 per share.

Company CFO Eddie Chen said most of the comapny's orders during the third quarter came from the LCD sector, while revenue contributions from electrophoretic displays (EPDs) were low.

However, E Ink chairman Scott Liu said the company is expected to have a better performance in the fourth quarter of 2012 due to an improved product mix and increased EPD shipments.

The chairman said that E Ink's shipments in the first half of 2012 were slow as clients had high levels of inventory following worse-than-expected Christmas sales in 2011. But the clients' launch of new products have restored momentum to E Ink's EPD shipments since the third quarter of 2012, he added.

The CFO also noted that there has been a lack of workers at E Ink's plants in China since the beginning of April 2012, which is expected to continue throughout January 2013.

Meanwhile, E Ink's consolidated revenues reached NT$7.595 billion during the third quarter, an on-quarter 70% increase.

E Ink to begin mass producing 13.3-inch flexible EPDs in 2H13
Sammi Huang, Taipei; Alex Wolfgram, DIGITIMES [Tuesday 14 May 2013]

E Ink Holdings has announced the upcoming release of E Ink Mobius, a new flexible e-paper display (EPD) technology. The company claimed E Ink Mobius will be the first flexible display technology that will go into mass production for a large format digital paper product based on flexible TFT technology developed by Sony.

According to E Ink, Mobius uses a TFT technology that will enable the development of much lighter and rugged products. Mobius displays can weigh less than 50% of the weight of an equivalent glass based TFT. A 13.3-inch display weighs about 60 grams.

The ruggedness and lightweight characteristics of Mobius are due to the TFT being constructed on a plastic substrate rather than traditional glass. The technology was developed by Sony specifically for use with EPDs in cooperation with E Ink. Sony has now transferred the technology to E Ink for mass production. E Ink will start mass production of the world's first 13.3 flexible EPD display in 2013.

"We have been working with Sony for over 10 years, and we are extremely happy to bring this technology to mass production," said Giovanni Mancini, director of product management for E Ink Holdings. "Development of this new digital paper product by Sony confirms our belief that the e-paper market is still strong."

Meanwhile, E Ink recently announced it will raise additional paid-in capital through issuing up to 60 million new shares for private placement. As EIH suffered net losses of NT$749.2 million (US$25.4 million) on consolidated revenues of NT$26.705 billion in 2012, the company's board of directors have decided not to distribute any dividend.

Global demand for e-paper on the decline
Sammi Huang, Taipei; Alex Wolfgram, DIGITIMES [Friday 12 December 2014]

Global demand for e-paper from e-book reader vendors is decreasing mainly due to competition from tablets and as a result, several vendors including Toshiba, Sony and Panasonic have withdrawn from the e-book reader market, according to sources with Taiwan's supply chain.

Although some e-book reader vendors, such as Amazon, are still looking at the China market for growth, the e-book reader market is not showing any signs it will rebound any time soon, the sources said.

But there are other opportunities for e-paper makers from the smartwatch and wearable devices segments.

Smartwatch devices that use e-paper technology currently include Sony Mobile's SmartBand Talk, which uses e-paper supplied by E Ink. More devices in 2015 are expected to start using the technology and China makers in particular aim to tackle increasing market opportunities through cost-competitive solutions, the sources added.

EIH and LTS to co-develop smart patch for medical management
Rebecca Kuo, Tainan; Steve Shen, DIGITIMES [Tuesday 24 October 2017]

E Ink Holdings (EIH) and US-based LTS Lohmann-Therapie Systeme (LTS) have announced a partnership agreement to develop a smart patch prototype based on LTS's transdermal therapeutic system technology, while utilizing EIH's low voltage e-paper solutions.

The smart patch delivers medication to patients in a convenient, controlled and comfortable manner, featuring an EIH display to deliver and to convey relevant information about patch performance.

Smart drug systems like smart patches will increase globally to nearly US$81.4 billion by 2024 as they provide a more targeted, uniform and secure method of drug delivery, according to data from New England Healthcare Institute (NEHI).

The LTS smart patch is equipped with i2-inch electronic paper display (EPD) which leverages the display's bistable nature to ensure the patient does not need to recharge the battery. The patch also features a switch and pressure sensor to show helpful information with functionalities including the countdown for the next dose and a reminder to remove the patch.

The smart patch is the first application to feature EIH's low voltage film, which uses 50-70% of the typical driving voltage for EPDs, said FY Gan, senior vice president at EIH.

The low voltage film is the thinnest electronic paper film available on the market at less than 0.2mm, enabling it to fit flawlessly on the TTS, Gan added.

"There are many advantages to TTS technologies, and now we can add a decisive enhancement - an EIH display," said Tim Schlange, CMO at LTS. "This feature allows LTS to provide functionalities to patients with more reliable, safe and pain-free applications and to further enhance the value of solutions for its partners in the pharmaceutical industry."

The smart patch concept will target initially the treatment of chronic diseases. The first prototype will be displayed during CPhI in Messe Frankfurt, Germany October 24-26, 2017.

EIH looks to significant growth in ESL shipments in 2018
Rebecca Kuo, Tainan; Steve Shen, DIGITIMES Friday 15 June 2018

Electrophoretic display (EPD) solution provider E Ink Holdings (EIH) expects shipments of its electronic shelf labels (ESLs) to grow exponentially in 2018, as the rise of the new retail business model has spread to China, Japan, Korea, India and other markets in Southeast Asia and South America resulting in a substantial increase in demand, according to company president Johnson Lee.

In terms of shipment areas of e-paper materials, EIH's shipments of ESLs will surpass those of e-book readers for the first time in 2018, Lee said.

Global ESL market reached only EUR81 million (US$93.66 million) in 2014 and has since then expanded to EUR153 million in 2017, Lee indicated, citing data from SES-imagotag.

The same data shows that the global ESL market is expected to top EUR400-500 million in 2020, representing a CAGR of over 30% during the period from 2015-2020.

In addition to ESL products, EIH has also been gearing up efforts to expand the sale of its e-paper solutions for the eNote products, expecting shipments of its eNote solutions to grow 2-3-fold in 2018, Lee said, noting that a number of brands including Sony, Fujitsu, reMarkable and Onyx Boox have already stepped into the eNote market.

As for the development of advanced e-paper technology, the company will complete in 2018 all of the preparatory work for kicking off volume production of advanced color paper (ACeP) products soon, while continuing the development of related technoloties for flexible display devices, according to company sources.
