      Kaufchance?:

      Why Arcos Dorados Shares Plunged
By Sean Williams | More Articles
      May 4, 2012 | Comments (3)

Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

What: Shares of the largest McDonald's (NYSE: MCD ) franchisee in Latin America, Arcos Dorados (NYSE: ARCO ) , plunged as much as 22% this morning following the company's first-quarter earnings report.

So what: For the quarter, Arcos Dorados extended a string of strong growth by reporting an 11.5% increase in sales with comparable restaurant sales up 11.6%. The company also noted that it opened 86 stores over the trailing-12-month period. The real news sending the stock lower is the 28.5% drop in net income to $25.4 million from $35.5 million. Arcos Dorados blamed lower operating results, higher foreign exchange losses, and higher tax charges as the primary reasons for the profit decline.

Now what: Without question -- to me, at least -- today's results look like a brutal overreaction by investors. The Golden Arches are an easily recognizable brand, and Arcos can do very little to control foreign currency trading. What the company can work on is controlling its expenses and continuing to grow at a double-digit pace. The other investable possibilities in this sector are: Wendy's, a company that has only been able to turn a marginal profit occasionally over the past few years; Jack in the Box, a considerably smaller company with comparable store growth that's only one-third of Arcos Dorados; and Yum! Brands, owner and operator of KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell, whose valuation is now much higher than Arcos Dorados. It's easy to see why Arcos Dorados shoots to the top of my list. I'll be taking a serious look at adding this to my personal portfolio after today's move lower.

Arcos Dorados Stock Crashes 53% So Far in 2014: Should You Buy Now?

      By Andrés Cardenal
      October 16, 2014

Arcos Dorados (NYSE: ARCO ) has crashed by a jaw-dropping 52% year to date, as investors seem to be clearly disappointed with the company's lower-than-expected financial performance and reduced growth guidance. The McDonald's (NYSE: MCD ) franchisee in Latin America is facing massive economic headwinds, and the outlook will most likely remain uncertain in the medium term.

On the other hand, the company still has enormous room for growth in the coming years, and the business isn't doing badly at all when adjusting for foreign exchange fluctuations and other factors outside the company's control. All of this begs the question: is the dip in Arcos Dorados stock a buying opportunity for investors?

      A tasty business
Arcos Dorados is the world's largest McDonald's franchisee in terms of systemwide sales and number of restaurants. The company operates or franchises 2,075 McDonald's-branded restaurants, with over 95,000 employees serving approximately 4.3 million customers a day. These numbers make Arcos Dorados the largest quick-service restaurant chain in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Arcos Dorados has the exclusive right to own, operate, and grant franchises for McDonald's restaurants in 20 Latin American and Caribbean countries and territories, including markets such as Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama, Peru, and Venezuela, among several others.

The size of the consumer base in Arcos Dorados' territories is approximately 520 million people, equivalent to the combined population of the U.S., Germany, the U.K., and Italy. Besides, population growth rates are typically higher in Latin America than in Europe or the U.S., and a younger population bodes well in terms of consumption growth.

Management estimates that Arcos Dorados has a market penetration level approximately one-third of what McDonald's has in the U.S., so the company offers enormous room for growth in the long term.

      A bitter context
Arcos Dorados has been hurt by economic volatility in several key markets lately. During the second quarter of 2014, the company changed the exchange rate used for financial reporting in Venezuela, which forced Arcos Dorados to recognize a foreign currency exchange loss of $39 million and asset impairments of $45.2 million.

Currency depreciation also had a negative impact on revenues in Argentina and Brazil, where economic activity was also below expectations. In addition, customers decided to stay home and watch the games during the massively popular FIFA World Cup in the second quarter of 2014, which delivered another hit to both sales and earnings during the quarter.

In this clearly difficult context, Arcos Dorados reported a 7.2% decline in revenues for the last quarter to $917.9 million. Reported EBITDA fell 37.8% to $42 million, and bottom-line results turned from a net gain of $8.8 million in the second quarter of 2013 to a net loss of $99 million in the second quarter this year.

On the other hand, performance is not that dismal when adjusting for currency fluctuations and the negative impact from the economic crisis in Venezuela. On an organic basis excluding Venezuela, system revenues grew 9.6% during the quarter, while systemwide comparable sales increased 7.8% versus the same quarter in 2013.

This is important to note, since the company seems to be mostly suffering from macroeconomic weakness as opposed to fundamental industry changes. While McDonald's is being challenged by the trend toward healthier nutrition in developed markets such as the U.S. and Europe, consumers in Latin America seem to still like Big Macs and fries.

Arcos Dorados reduced its growth guidance for 2014 because of the challenging economic conditions in its primary markets. Revenues excluding Venezuela were previously expected to increase between 13% and 16%, while the current forecast is for a growth rate of 9% to 11%. The company also cut its store-opening plans for the full year, from 90 to 84 new openings.

Arcos Dorados has adjusted the debt covenants in its revolving credit facility with Bank of America and its master franchise agreement with McDonald's to reflect growing debt levels. While the net debt-to-adjusted EBITDA ratio is still within reasonable levels at 2.6 as of last quarter, growing debt levels in the context of a challenging scenario is a major risk factor for investors in Arcos Dorados stock.

      The bottom line
Most of the weakness in Arcos Dorados stock seems to be related to economic conditions in Latin America. The business is still growing when adjusting for currency fluctuations, and long-term opportunities for growth are certainly quite promising
      .

However, it's hard to tell when the economic landscape will improve, and growing debt levels are a major risk that need to be watched. Chances are Arcos Dorados can deliver substantial gains for investors once conditions change for the better, but volatility will most likely remain nauseating in the coming months.

For those with a strong enough stomach to buy at current prices, gradually buying small partial positions could be a smart idea to keep risks under control.

Arcos Dorados Holdings Inc. Cla (ARCO) was a big mover last session, as the company saw its shares rise nearly 6% on the day. The move came on solid volume too with far more shares changing hands than in a normal session. This breaks the recent trend of the company, as the stock is now trading above the volatile price range of $5.49 to $6.31 in the past one-month time frame. The company has seen no estimate revision over the past 30 days, while the Zacks Consensus Estimate hasn't been in a trend. The recent price action is encouraging though, so make sure to keep a close watch on this firm in the near future

Arcos Dorados Holdings Inc (NYSE:ARCO) is in a strong bear grip; the short interest is registered high at 18.05% of the floated shares. Each share is trading at $6.17, which is merely 12.5% above the 52-week low and 50.6% below the 52-week high. However, any positive news coming from the counter could result in massive unwinding of short positions, which may lead to a swift price escalation.. Shares of Arcos Dorados Holdings Inc (NYSE:ARCO) ended the trading session with a loss of 0.12 points or 1.91% at $6.17. The shares had previously closed at $6.29. Heavy selling had caused the price to collapse to $6.12 intraday but value-buying helped the shares pare some of the losses; however the shares dipped into the negative territory by end of the day. This is an interesting bullish sign which implies that investors are willing to buy on the dips. The session witnessed a volume of 375,226 shares. Arcos Dorados Holdings Inc (NYSE:ARCO) has a market cap of $803 million and the number of outstanding shares is 130,216,000. The shares have a 52-week high of $12.485.

Arcos Dorados Getting Cheaper By The Day

      Holmes_Osborne, Osborne Global Investors
Feb. 19, 2015 12:50 AM ET | About: Arcos Dorados (ARCO)

      Summary
      • 4.5% dividend yield.
      • Bill Gates major shareholder.
      • Stock at all time low.

Many good articles have been written about South American McDonald's (NYSE:MCD) franchisee Arcos Dorados (NYSE:ARCO). This article seeks to supplement these articles about the investing merits of Arcos.
Arcos Dorados (Golden Arches) was spun-off from McDonald's to CEO Stanton Woods and a group of Private Equity investors in 2007. Mr. Woods was born in Columbia to a family that owned Coca-Cola bottler Panamerican Beverages. Mr. Woods has a 40% economic interest in the company and a 76.3% voting interest.
This interest has its benefits and drawbacks. Benefits include the fact that Mr. Woods has a huge incentive to see Arcos succeed. He is also incentivized to not dilute the shareholder base. The option overhang for management is negligible. This is great for long term shareholders.
The drawbacks are that he owns the majority of the "B" shares which receive five votes per share. The publicly traded "A" shares receive only one vote per share. Dual share structures often dampen demand for publicly traded companies as activists cannot get involved. Guess who else is a major shareholder? Bill Gates (NASDAQ:MSFT). Gates and his various trusts and investment companies own 6.7% of outstanding shares.

With a little over 129 million shares outstanding and a stock price of $5.51 gives us a market cap of $710 million. With a little over 2000 stores, that gives us an average franchise price of $355,000. Sounds pretty cheap to me. This is not only stand alone stores but also McCafes and stores in malls.

In the last annual report, Arcos owned 1.1 million square feet of real estate in Latin America. So what is this worth? Hard to say. The company has had an abundance of problems with weak currencies and an unfriendly business climate. At $200 a square foot, that would give us over $200 million but that's a very rough guess.
The latest quarterly report shows $94 million in cash, $75 million in accounts receivable, $84 million in other receivable, and $1.15 billion in property, plant, and equipment. $1.8 billion shows in total liabilities.

At a market cap of $710 million, it's probably pretty close to net asset value. Of course it's hard to put a price on something in countries with plummeting currencies and all of the other problems they are facing. There is no doubt the stock could continue to tank, though they are cheap. If Arcos can continue to pay the 4.5% dividend, it should shore up the stock.

      http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2015/10/12/why-shares-…

Why Shares of Arcos Dorados Holdings Inc. Fell 32% in September
The McDonald's franchisee is dealing with multiple problems in its biggest market.

What: Shares of Arcos Dorados Holdings (NYSE:ARCO) fell 32% during the month of September, according to S&P Capital I.Q. data. The company's stock is now down 50% in 2015.

So what: The world's largest McDonald's franchisee can trace its troubles to its most significant market, Brazil, which accounts for nearly 47% of sales. Brazil is experiencing a rapid economic slowdown. The country's GDP is expected to contract by just under 3% this year. Inflation stands at 9.5%, and the country's currency, the real, has plummeted 35% against the U.S. dollar year to date.

The deteriorating economic fundamentals have crimped the spending power of Brazil's middle class -- fewer are patronizing quick service chains like McDonald's. Arcos' Brazil sales have plunged more than 19% in the first half of 2015 versus last year.

The company's concentration in Brazil, and indeed, its focus in Latin America, has weighed on results on another front, as its earnings are denominated in U.S. dollars. After accounting for $54.2 million of negative foreign currency translation effects, a net loss for the first two quarters of 2015 of $21.2 million (on $1.5 billion in sales) more than tripled, to over $74 million.

But the worst news for Arcos, which accounted for the dramatic 32% September decline, was Standard and Poor's downgrade of Brazil's credit rating to "junk" status at the beginning of the month. Of the hefty $722 million of debt Arcos Dorados maintains, roughly $218 million is comprised of Brazilian real-denominated bonds, due in 2016. The yield on these bonds spiked to more than 23% the day after Brazil's credit rating was cut, according to Bloomberg News.

Now what: With operational losses, and barely break-even cash flow through the first half of 2015, the last thing shareholders want to worry over is Arcos Dorados' balance sheet. The company's debt load, already at nearly two times equity, is clouded by what will surely be an inability to refinance at attractive rates on the Brazilian bond markets.

Thus, the company has pledged to reduce its long-term debt burden over the next several quarters and has indicated that it will unlock the value in some of its appreciated real estate to reduce fixed borrowings.

Alongside this initiative, Arcos will also have to weather the current slump in the economy of its largest market, and find ways to pull in consumers to avoid further revenue and margin deterioration. Yet at the end of the day, the company has the McDonald's brand to work with, so there's every reason to believe that with crisp management of its current affairs, a long-term rebound is still possible.

Asit Sharma has no position in any stocks mentioned. The Motley Fool owns shares of Arcos Dorados.

Arcos Dorados shares seem to have fallen so much that there is nowhere for them to go but up. Management has reduced the company's net financial debt by nearly 20% over the past year, and key ratios have improved as its EBITDA has increased, all signs that the company is on the path to recovery.

Despite posting a net loss for the past two years, Arcos Dorados is still sitting on a valuable asset: over 2,000 McDonald's restaurants, at a time when McDonald's seems to be in resurgence around the world. Assuming the recession in Brazil eventually breaks, over the long term the stock should recover at least some of its losses over the last five years.

...Underperformance, mostly due to macroeconomic related issues, may be about to end.
Worst baked into expectations, while things, especially on a constant currency basis, starting to look up.
Steps to take care of leverage and operational weakness are showing some early signs of positive change. ...
... Now that most of the negatives are baked into expectations and the company seems to be working effectively on the comeback plan, this might be a good time to study the name as a contrarian play with extremely good market positioning for long-term success. ...
... Now that the stock is down 80% over the past five years and credit rating is four steps down from an investment grade, much of the fundamental weakness seems to be baked in, including things like currency weakness that may continue to bog down the performance, but factors like the company's leading market position, geographic footprint in Latin America, decent dynamics for the fast food restaurant segment and strategic alignment with McDonald's are being overlooked. The 80% increase over the past three months, off from the lows, may be just the beginning. ...
... From a revenue standpoint, currency, especially the Brazilian Real because Brazil is the biggest market, is one of the biggest problems, but looking at the various forecasts, expectations are leaning towards the viewpoint that the worst may be over for the Real. ...
... The combination of improved operating performance, better cash flow and efforts to improve credit as well as the liquidity profile of the business, may eventually help the business with credit rating too. ...
... Right now, the company's geographic presence in Latin America is a liability, but rather than a discount, there should be a premium for the strategic value offered by the assets in the geography. The demographics offered by the markets, e.g. 30-35 percent of population of most markets where the company is operating is between the age of 15-34 years, are such that the business should be among the top of the list for any investor looking for geographies that can support long-term organic growth.
Bottom Line: Things may look ugly right now, mostly due to the macro factors, but the downside risks seem to be baked in, while various initiatives, operational as well as financial, have started to show results.

      Arcos Dorados

The world's largest McDonald's (NYSE: MCD) franchisee, Arcos Dorados, has been more than a few fries short of a Happy Meal lately because of the woes of various Latin American economies. That includes Brazil, its largest market, representing almost half of its total revenue, but also Venezuela, due to financial pressures there. Finally, Argentina is doing Arcos no favors with its currency issues. On a GAAP basis, those factors caused the restaurant operator to report a 7% decline in revenue over the first nine months of its fiscal year, but on a constant-currency basis, they're up almost 14%.

Arcos Dorados, which means "golden arches," has been a volatile stock. But after hitting its all-time low in early 2016 following the cancellation of its dividend as it sought to shore up its finances in the face of recessionary Latin American markets, it has since climbed some 140% and should be able to continue its march higher.

McDonald's itself is in an appreciably stronger position than where it was a year ago, and Arcos Dorados was able to report a 6.3% increase in comparable sales in Brazil in the quarter; a 5.6% rise in comps in northern Latin American markets, particularly Mexico; and a 25% increase in southern Latin American markets.

Currency exchange rates are still going to wreak havoc with the fast-food chain's operations in the short term, but over the longer haul, Arcos Dorados should still be a golden opportunity.

Why Arcos Dorados Holdings Inc. Stock Lost 19% Last Month

Shares of the Latin American McDonald's chain fell on a disappointing earnings report.
Jeremy Bowman (TMFHobo) Jun 13, 2018 at 3:28PM
      What happened
Shares of Arcos Dorados Holdings Inc. (NYSE:ARCO) took a dive last month after the Latin American McDonald's (NYSE:MCD) franchisee reported disappointing first-quarter earnings. According to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence, the stock finished down 19%.
      So what
Arcos Dorados, which is McDonald's largest franchisee, had its worst day of the month on May 8, as the stock fell 7% in anticipation of its first-quarter earnings report. The company said that revenue increased 5.5% in the quarter, or 10.7% on a currency neutral basis, to $802.8 million, excluding Venezuela. Comparable sales in the period increased 9.8%, but much of that was driven by inflationary pressure in parts of the region.
On the bottom line, earnings per share fell from $0.19 a year ago to $0.06, which missed estimates of $0.08, though that was mostly due to a change in other operating income that excludes core operations.
      CEO Sergio Alonso said:
Our strategy of leveraging McDonald's core assets to expand volumes, reinvesting in our restaurants and enhancing operational excellence drove improved customer satisfaction together with topline growth. We solidified our capital structure with the completion of our tender offer and issuance of our 2027 Notes. This, along with the operational efficiencies we have built into our system, positions us to capitalize on improvements in our markets as we transition from a turnaround mindset to a growth strategy.
Later in the month, the company announced a $60 million stock repurchase program.
      Now what
Considering that economies like Brazil's -- where half of Arcos' restaurants are -- are gradually improving, the stock should be a winner from a macroeconomic standpoint. McDonald's itself has been strong around the world, as many of the improvements made under CEO Steve Easterbrook are paying off.
The stock touched a 52-week low last month and is trading at a price-to-earnings ratio of 17.5, significantly cheaper than McDonald's. Considering the potential growth ahead, last month's sell-off may present an appealing buying opportunity.
