Sierra Wireless(T.SW) snaps up Wireless Maingate, for footprint in M2M connectivity - SHE - Dec 22, 2014
      www.stockhouse.com/news/newswire/2014/12/22/sierra-wireless-…

"Sierra Wireless (TSX: SW, Stock Forum) expanded its business portfolio today when the company announced that it had entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Sweden-based machine-to-machine (M2M) connectivity provider, Wireless Maingate.

According to the news release, the US$90.0 million transaction is expected to close in February 2015 and will provide the company a footprint in the M2M connectivity marketplace with information management services to more than 500 customers across Europe, reaching a subscriber base of more than 500,000 connected devices.

The company expects the deal to be immediately accretive as Maingate anticipates year-end 2014 earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) of US$6.0 million
      .

The transaction involves the company to acquire all outstanding shares of Maingate, including those held by Nordic private equity fund, Verdane Capital VI. Maingate’s current shareholders will retain the Enterprise Solutions business in the form of a spin out, Maingate Enterprise Solutions AB, which will be formed prior to closing.

Company President and CEO, Jason Cohenour, commented on the deal, “The acquisition of Maingate is a strong strategic fit for Sierra Wireless, helping us to accelerate our device-to-cloud mission with the addition of leading edge wireless M2M connectivity and managed services.”

Then he added, “Maingate has a strong base of top-tier M2M customers and a proven technology platform that we believe will enable market expansion and accelerated services growth through our channels.”

Baard Eilertsen, Maingate CEO, went on to state, “Joining with Sierra Wireless enables us to accelerate our growth in Europe and broaden our customer base.”

And then concluded, “Enterprises throughout Europe are looking for efficient ways to connect their assets and digitize their businesses, and the combined offering from Sierra Wireless and Maingate is the perfect solution for that.”

Sierra Wireless was in the news recently when the Richmond, British Columbia-based company announced its inclusion into the S&P/TSX Composite Index in Canada a week ago.

Shares climbed 6.90% on the news to $52.64 per share.

Currently there are 31.7m outstanding shares with a market cap of $1.7 billion. "

The Internet of Things 'is Expected to Reach $30,000,000,000 by 2020', The IoT market is already a multi-billion dollar industry, +'could' reach 'the trillions' within a the next decade @this pace. However, defining what the IoT actually is still presents a challenge - E.com - Nov 11, 2014

      - Jeff Kagan -
      www.equities.com/editors-desk/stocks/technology/nternet-of-t…

"One of the very exciting areas of tech is the Internet of Things. The IoT is a very rapidly growing sector and will start to pop up on everyone’s radar sooner rather than later. Some say growth is expected to reach $30 billion by 2020. That’s just five short years from now. That sounds great, however, that’s just what companies are spending to be a player. Revenue opportunities for companies in the IoT space are not as clear at this early stage.

The IoT seems to be on everyone’s mind these days from investors to companies who are building it and growing rapidly themselves in the process. Thinking about what the IoT means is a very exciting prospect.

It’s like thinking about the Internet in the mid 1990s. We know it will be big. We just don’t know all the ups and downs we will experience along the way. And we don’t know the direction it will follow in advance.

This is like building the highways before we build the cars to travel on it. That’s always the case isn’t it? We have to take things in this order because if we build the cars first, they would have not road to drive on.

While that is always the case, it’s also always a little uneasy as we watch the billions of dollars feeding this growing beast before we see any profitability, which is years down the road.

The buildout is big news for companies in many sectors like software, hardware, services and security. These are all players in the IoT buildout. When it’s complete, all this will be connected just like we do with the Internet.

However, the IoT is going to be huge and it’s going to be important. Already, IoT is a trillion-dollar industry. It's still in the buildout stages and we are just in the very beginning. Over the next several years we will see tens of billions of connected devices start to log on. Growth could be very rapid.

Although, as always, there are many different definitions of what IoT actually is. Any way we slice this beast, today not everyone knows what the Internet of Things is, but tomorrow it will be second nature. Uptake could be very fast.

Smartphones, tablet’s, smartwatches will all be connected. So will computers, televisions and radios. That’s not all. Every device will be connected including our cars, refrigerators, homes and everything that can be operated with electronics.

As you can imagine, I think this is going to be huge.

During this buildout stage, this is an enormous growth opportunity for industries like telecom, wireless, computer, network and more, on the consumer side, business side and government side of the ledger.

Then when we start using the IoT, it will be an equally enormous, but different opportunity for these same sectors.

With all that said, there will be winners and    losers at all times.

While there is no leader today, but this is a very important piece of our future whether we look at this as a consumer, a business user, or a government user.

This has enormous potential growth opportunities and that makes it attractive to workers, partners, governments and investors.

I’ll be writing about individual companies and new technologies of interest as time passes. This should be a very exciting area to follow for investors, customers and partners for small, lesser-known companies and big, brand name companies as well.

So keep the Internet of Things on your radar during the initial buildout stages, and when we all start to use it. This network of networks is going to be important going forward for decades to come.

Denver’s Regional Transportation District deploys InMotion Solutions from Sierra Wireless for automatic vehicle location +smart card payment projects, InMotion oMG Mobile Gateway 'leverages both high-speed cellular +garage Wi-Fi networks' - CL, VANCOUVER - Oct 14, 2014
      www.cantechletter.com/newswire/denvers-regional-transportati…

"Sierra Wireless (NASDAQ: SWIR) (TSX: SW) today announced that the Regional Transportation District in Denver, Colorado has deployed InMotion Solutions to support mobile broadband access for automatic vehicle location (AVL) and smart card fare payments aboard more than 1,100 buses in its fixed route fleet.

Denver’s Regional Transportation District (RTD) is one of the top 20 public transit agencies in the United States, providing services to residents across an eight county metro area. From bus and light rail service, to the free MallRide and specialty services, RTD’s goal is to make each customer’s experience the best it can be. This goal is supported by commitments to safe, on-time scheduled service, exceptional customer service, clean vehicles and clear communications.

“We wanted a carrier-agnostic communications platform that would allow us to grow and upgrade as wireless technology changed,” said Tom Hughes, RTD’s Manager, Intelligent Transportation Systems. “The InMotion Solutions oMG Mobile Gateway connects mobile equipment for our smart card fare system and our new bus AVL system over both a Sprint cellular broadband network and our new 802.11n garage-area Wi-Fi networks. It supports real time communications while buses are on the road and bulk data transfer automatically upon return to the garage. The management system enables us to see how much data is being transmitted, which network is being used, and allows our IT teams to update configurations remotely. It’s a daily ‘heads-up’ tool that we have come to rely on to ensure communications are happening in real time.”

Prior to deploying the oMG Mobile Gateway, RTD was seeking a communications solution to enable secure garage-area data transfer for a planned fare payment system aboard the fixed-route bus fleet. They had also determined that upgrading an aging 450 MHz private two-way radio system, used for AVL/dispatch data communications throughout the District, was unlikely to be able to meet their future real-time communications needs. After evaluating available options for both real-time networking and bulk data exchange for the fleet, RTD was presented with the InMotion solution by the prime contractor for its long-term fleet data communications solution.

“RTD coordinated planned investments in its new fare system and bus AVL solution to deploy a very flexible, high-performance wireless communications solution that can ultimately serve all systems aboard its fleet,” said Scott Davis, Vice President of Worldwide Sales, Enterprise Solutions for Sierra Wireless. “RTD now possesses the mobile communications technology, management systems and the organizational expertise to efficiently deliver reliable communications to new onboard systems using the latest broadband wireless technologies.”

"OTTAWA, CANADA--(Marketwired - Oct. 1, 2014) - Top intellectual property licensing company, WiLAN (TSX:WIN) (NASDAQ:WILN) today provided an update on ongoing litigation.

On December 6, 2012, WiLAN announced that the company had commenced litigation against Apple Inc. ("Apple"), HTC Corporation ("HTC") and Sierra Wireless Inc. ("Sierra Wireless") claiming infringement of WiLAN's U.S. Patent Nos. 8,315,640 and 8,311,040, related to LTE technologies.

To date, two of the three defendants, HTC and Sierra Wireless, have signed license and settlement agreements to resolve this litigation. The litigation, involving remaining defendant, Apple, is being tried in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California.

Earlier this year, WiLAN moved for summary judgment on invalidity claims. In addition, Apple moved for summary judgment on invalidity and non-infringement defenses. WiLAN has been advised that Judge Dana M. Sabraw has issued a ruling today that grants Apple's motion for summary judgment.

WiLAN is currently reviewing the ruling with trial counsel, McKool Smith. The case remains before the courts and it is WiLAN's policy to not provide commentary on cases that are before the courts.

WiLAN has an additional case in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California involving Apple related to the infringement of 5 LTE-related patents.
