Four LNG newbuilds get Wartsila technology
A series of four LNG carriers being built by the Hudong-Zhongua Shipbuilding yard in China will feature Wärtsilä LNG reliquefaction plants and gas handling systems.

      The ships are owned by

      -Bermuda-based Teekay Corporation,
      -China LNG Shipping,
-CNOOC Energy Technology of China, and
      -BW Gas of Norway.

The contracts with Wärtsilä were issued by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding and were signed during the fourth quarter.

The reliquefaction plant will reliquefy 70% of the boil-off gas from the ships’ LNG cargo and return it to the cargo tanks, while the balance is fed by the gas handling system to the engines for propulsion purposes. The system is pre-fabricated in skid modules for easy onboard installation and hook-up. It can be stopped when the cargo pumps are in operation, thereby reducing the need for extra generator capacity, Wärtsilä said in a statement.

For both the LNG reliquefaction plant and gas handling system, Wärtsilä will provide engineering support, system responsibility and associated process guarantees.

The first of the 174,000 m3 LNG carriers is scheduled for delivery in September 2017, with two to follow in 2018 and the last ship in January 2019.

      May 3, 2016
      By William Steel

Finnish energy group Wärtsilä recently announced its entry into the solar energy industry with an emphasis on delivery of turnkey utility-scale solar PV and unique hybrid power plant solutions. The company will engage in delivery of its first hybrid power plant late this year, with a retrofitting project in Jordan.

Wärtsilä spokesperson Jussi Laitinen told Renewable Energy World that there are three key drivers to Wärtsilä’s new direction: “First, the timing is very good; we consider the price of solar modules to be appropriate to enter the business. Second, the growth prospects for utility scale solar are tempting — this is where the growth is going to happen in the near future. And third, we are already very much present in areas where utility-scale PV growth will happen.”

With facilities in 176 countries that are powered by liquid fuels, including oil, biofuel and natural gas, Wärtsilä has a total of 60 GW of installed generation capacity. The company plans on leveraging its experience and customer base to promote both pure solar PV plants of 10 MW and above, and hybrid plant solutions. These systems, Laitinen said, are expected to be especially promising in Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and South East Asia, where target customers include utilities, independent power producers and industrial customers.

“We have a very broad, existing customer base around these areas interested in the hybrid solution; meaning, existing customers can now buy a solar PV power plant and connect it to an engine power plant to reduce CO2 emissions and fuel costs,” Laitinen said.

Wärtsilä’s hybrid solution couples solar PV generation with its so-called Smart Power Generation power plant — an internal combustion engine-based system, designed for providing fast-response baseload, peaking and backup power.

The two generating units will operate in synchrony, with PV providing energy whenever available — offsetting fuel use during the day — and engines rapidly able to ramp up whenever necessary to compensate for variation in solar generation. The engines may be run off of natural gas, heavy or light fuel oil, or biofuels.

Wärtsilä views the hybrid solution as “key to the transition to renewables and a natural continuation of our Smart Power Generation concept.”

“We see an opportunity to help customers reduce their CO2 footprint — it saves fuels costs and CO2 emissions. And it seems the latter can be as interesting as the fuel costs to many companies,” Laitinen said.

Wärtsilä is anticipating rapid growth in its venture into solar — expecting annual sales of €300 million ($346 million) by 2020, based off 300 MW in annual installations.

The company’s first hybrid project is planned for Jordan and will see 46 MW of solar modules connected to an existing 250 MW Smart Power Generation plant featuring sixteen Wärtsilä 50DF engines.

Wärtsilä will be providing the Jordanian project complete engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services, including inverters, switchgear, control systems and overhead transmission lines.
Regarding the timeline for the project, Laitinen said construction will start at the end of the year, and the solar PV unit is scheduled to come online next year.

WÄRTSILÄ AND CARNIVAL CORPORATION ANNOUNCE STRATEGIC PERFORMANCE-BASED PARTNERSHIP

Wärtsilä Corporation, Press Release, 25 January 2017 at 10 am EET

Wärtsilä and Carnival Corporation & plc (NYSE/LSE: CCL; NYSE: CUK), the world's largest cruise company, announced today that they have signed a comprehensive, 12-year agreement that strengthens their existing partnership and joint continuous improvement efforts to maintain the highest possible levels for cruise ship safety and reliability. The performance-based agreement provides for shared financial incentives and exposure based on outcomes for both companies.

The value of the long-term agreement is approximately EUR 900 million. The expected revenues for 24 months, approximately EUR 150 million, will be included in Wärtsilä's order book for the first quarter of 2017. As the contract becomes effective as of April 1, the expected revenues for 2017 are EUR 56 million.

According to the agreement, all engine maintenance and monitoring work for 79 of Carnival Corporation's vessels will be handled by Wärtsilä, and ongoing planning will be a collaboration between both companies.

The agreement includes Wärtsilä's Dynamic Maintenance Planning (DMP) and Condition Based Maintenance (CBM). These services are based on capturing digitalised data streams from every engine, after which this data is analysed by specialists. This allows real-time optimisation of the equipment whilst predicting operational and maintenance demands. With the DMP and CBM in place, vessel and fleet operations are optimized and engine overhaul intervals potentially extended. With approximately 400 Wärtsilä engines covered under the agreement, even the smallest improvements in vessel fuel consumption add up to significant annual savings in fleet operational costs.

"Our agreement with Wärtsilä extends our cooperation to a strategic partnership," said Bill Burke, Chief Maritime Officer for Carnival Corporation. "With Wärtsilä maintaining vessels under our agreement and ensuring a high level of safety and reliability, we can concentrate on our core priority - providing great cruise vacations for our more than 11 million annual guests. In addition to reducing our costs, the long-term agreement increases safety and operational efficiency - two critical advantages in the fast-growing cruise market."

      Mutual incentives and shared risks

The long-term performance-based agreement model provides predictability of costs and incentives for both companies as remuneration is based on how the equipment performs, with the companies sharing exposure based on outcomes. For Wärtsilä, the strategic partnership encourages increased focus on research and development, manufacturing and other functions to make its products even better and more efficient.

"We are very excited to develop our long-term partnership into a more strategic direction. Both Wärtsilä and Carnival Corporation are committed to investing significantly in this partnership as well as to develop our cooperation in the long run. We are confident that working closely together, we can improve performance in both organisations," says Pierpaolo Barbone, President, Services & Executive Vice President, Wärtsilä Corporation.

Further improvements in energy efficiency will be a significant focus area for Wärtsilä within this agreement and a key driver for the cooperation between the two companies. Engine efficiency and fuel consumption will be measured on a regular basis, with improvements to fuel efficiency based on continuous monitoring and data analysis. Potential savings in fuel costs are counted in tens of millions of dollars per year.

      Wartsila enters energy storage market

      05/10/2017
      By Kelvin Ross, Editor

Finnish technology group Wartsila has entered the energy storage market with the launch of several new solutions.

Wartsila says the hybrid power plant and energy storage solutions will utilize storage technology alongside traditional engine-based power generation. The company is also offering stand-alone storage solutions.

Today’s launch comes on the back of Wartsila’s entry into the solar PV business last year with its solar PV plants and engines+solar PV hybrid plants.

“The energy storage market is being created as we speak and gaining momentum,” it said. “Today, large markets exist for stand-alone energy storage, for example in the US, UK and central Europe. Hybrid solutions including energy storage are increasingly becoming financially attractive, for example in areas where fuel prices are high and the penetration of renewable power sources is significant.”

Javier Cavada, President of Wartsila Energy Solutions, added: "We are very excited to introduce these new solutions to our customers. Adding energy storage technology to our existing engine based power plants enables our customers to have instant power while saving fuel, maintenance costs and reducing emissions.”

The storage solutions have been enabled by Wartsila’s co-operation with Greensmith, a leading provider of EMS software which makes GEMS, a widely-deployed storage software solution.

Wartsila said that by using GEMS, “hybrid power plants run in an optimal way at all times ensuring ideal utilization of both the engines and the energy storage solution”.

"With a world-class EMS software platform we solidify our systems integration capabilities" added Cavada. He said the new solutions provide optimized spinning reserve, fuel savings, O&M optimization, regulation compliance and reduced emissions.

Risto Paldanius, director of Energy Storage at Wärtsilä Energy Solutions, said: "With these new solutions, Wartsila does not only enter the energy storage market but also becomes a systems integrator as we are able to optimize the usage of our hybrid power plants with EMS software."

The Storage Scoop-up Continues: Wärtsilä Acquires Greensmith Energy Management Systems
      May 15, 2017

      http://www.renewableenergyworld.com/articles/2017/05/the-sto…

At the storage industry matures, larger companies are starting to purchase some of the original start-ups. Earlier this year, Enel Green Power scooped up Demand Energy and Ormat purchased Viridity and in 2016, GE Ventures bought a stake in Sonnen.

This week news that Finland-based Wärtsilä agreed to acquire the California-based start-up Greensmith Energy Management Systems is another sign of the energy storage sector’s promise for the future.

Founded in 2008, Greensmith provides intelligent energy storage technology and solutions and is responsible for deploying about a third of total U.S. energy storage capacity in 2016, according to the company. Specializing in energy storage optimization and integration software, the company today employs over 40 people and has delivered in excess of 180 MW to some of the largest power companies globally. In 2016, Wärtsilä's net sales totaled EUR 4.8 billion with approximately 18,000 employees. The company has operations in over 200 locations in more than 70 countries around the world.

Greensmith’s energy management software system, GEMS, enables utilities, EPCs and IPPs to manage and monitor individual systems or entire fleets of systems, identifying and diagnosing equipment issues in real time, and extending system performance and longevity. The company also offers a commercial and industrial (C&I) and microgrid solution called OMNI4.

Energy storage is expected to grow exponentially as it becomes an integral part of any energy system. Wärtsilä said that it aims to become a global systems integrator with full in-house ability to provide energy solutions that include many different forms of power generation, energy storage and demand side management. Having an integration software platform is a must, it says, and acquiring Greensmith gives Wärtsilä an industry leading platform to offer across an installed base of over 63 gigawatts of power generation around the world.

      Wärtsilä’s order intake climbing

Finnish technology group and LNG specialist Wärtsilä, has seen its third-quarter order intake jump 19 percent boosted by an order to build an LNG terminal in Hamina.

The company’s order intake for the third quarter reached €1.35 billion ($1.6 billion), up from €1.14 billion during the corresponding quarter in 2016.

Commenting on the results, Wärtsilä’s president and CEO Jaako Eskola, said it was “satisfactory.”

“In addition to the good demand for our power generation solutions, we received an order to build our third LNG terminal in Finland, which will be located in Hamina,” he said.

The company noted that the order intake for the first nine months reached €4.13 billion, showing a 15 percent increase over the same period last year when the order intake was at €3.6 billion.

The company’s net sales for the quarter jumped 9 percent to €1.18 billion, while the first nine months net sales reached €3.48 billion, showing a 7 percent increase over the corresponding period in 2016.

Wärtsilä’ expects the overall development for 2017 to be relatively unchanged from the previous year.

However, despite the order intake growth, the marine market environment remains challenging, as the merchant, gas carrier, and offshore segments continue to suffer from overcapacity and slow trade growth.

Wärtsilä’s current order book for 2017 deliveries is at €1.20 billion, as compared to 1.35 billion last year.

Wärtsilä Chief Executive Jaako Eskola probably remembers the first week of July this year more as the point when a promising billion dollar market disappeared into thin air than for the humid summer heat that had descended across North Europe. On one of the first days that month, Finnish Wärtsilä found itself relegated to the sideline, forced to accept the fact the IMO had once more postponed the rules for ballast water management, and an otherwise promising market faded several years into the future...
